Stars and Strips Redacted

British Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey had a terrible premonition as he saw the gas lights being lit in London on the evening of August 3, 1914. Knowing that Britain would declare war on Germany the next day, he was moved to observe — “The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” Skip ahead another 99 years. On August 4, 2013, for Americans either traveling and living abroad in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, there was a different kind of lights out — the sudden and total shutdown

This is an interesting correlation of the state of the British Empire at the eve of WWI nearly 100 years ago, and that of the United States today. It certainly looks like we are entering the twilight years of our standing in the world. I like the author Andrew Wilson’s invitation to Resident Obama to take another trip to the Middle East, when (if ever) it safe enough to do so. I just hope that history doesn’t have a repeat of 100 years ago and have our own Archduke Ferdinand event.

Last month was a bittersweet seventh birthday for Twitter. The Union of Jewish French Students sued the social-media giant for $50 million in a French court in light of anti-Semitic tweets that carried the hashtag #unbonjuif ("a good Jew"). In January, Twitter agreed to delete the tweets, but the student group now wants the identities of the users who sent the anti-Semitic messages so that they can be prosecuted under French law against hate speech. Twitter is resisting. It claims that as an American company protected by the First Amendment, it does not have to aid government efforts to control

People who signed up early for insurance through the new marketplaces were more likely to be prescribed drugs to treat pain, depression and H.I.V. and were less likely to need contraceptives, according to a new study that provides a much-anticipated look at the population that signed up for coverage under the new health care law. The health of those who enrolled in new coverage is being closely watched because many observers have questioned whether the new marketplaces would attract a large share of sick people, which could lead to higher premiums and ultimately doom the new law. The study, to be released

Imagine a situation in which an earthquake destroys a suspension bridge over a deep canyon. A passenger train is speeding toward the location, and those in charge realize there is a potential problem ahead but choose instead to argue about the ambient temperature in the passenger cars, the food service, and whether they will reach their final destination on time. A few people are quite disturbed when they learn of the tragedy about to unfold if the train isn’t halted, but they are labeled as “alarmists” who really are not sophisticated enough to understand the situation. Obviously, I am referring to our

Edward Snowden has plenty of flaws, if you listen to certain members of Congress who call him, at best, a traitor or at worst, a traitor working with Russia. In reality, though, Snowden is simply that roommate who wants you to clean up a little more.(Snip)The most interesting detail revealed was how Snowden hopes to one day receive asylum somewhere like, say, Germany. Now! This is interesting for a number of reasons, the most obvious reason being that Germany and the U.S. are strong allies but leaked NSA documents revealed the agency spied on chancellor Angela Merkel´s cell phone. It’s an election year, which means the Democrats’ crass politicization of important women’s issues is gearing up once more. Don’t be fooled by President Obama’s new push for pay equity. It sounds good, but it is nothing more than a political ploy to distract from the ever-conspicuous cloud of bad mojo following Democrats around as they brace for the 2014 midterm elections. In the past few election cycles, a the left has done a masterful job of courting women by creating lines of division between Republicans and Democrats where they don’t actually exist. Two years after the FBI first began investigating former CIA director David Petraeus, Attorney General Eric Holder confirmed to lawmakers that the case remains open -- amid allegations it is being used as leverage to keep the former general quiet. "All I can say is that this is an ongoing investigation," Holder testified Tuesday, in response to a series of questions from Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz, who wrote to the Justice Department last month about the matter. "I’m really not in a position to say much more about it than that." Fox News was told there may be friction between the FBI

"The U.S. could suffer a coast-to-coast blackout if saboteurs knocked out just nine of the country´s 55,000 electric-transmission substations on a scorching summer day," Rebecca Smith wrote. It´s no secret that North America´s three massive power grids, the interconnected systems that transmit electricity from power plants to consumers, are not invincible. The U.S. power grid is, in fact, big enough to fail. In other words, the grid may be not be the "right" size—big enough to distribute power efficiently, but small enough to prevent widespread blackouts, such as the 2003 blackout that

There was no immediate word on the cause of her death at her home in Wrotham, Kent, southeast England. Her father said in a statement Monday: "Peaches has died. We are beyond pain." "She was the wildest, funniest, cleverest, wittiest and the most bonkers of all of us," he said. "Writing 'was' destroys me afresh. What a beautiful child. How is this possible that we will not see her again? How is that bearable? We loved her and will cherish her forever."

The chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee says investigators have uncovered evidence that a former Internal Revenue Service official may have committed crimes as part of the agency´s tea party controversy. Ms. Lerner faces a vote in the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Thursday that could begin the process of accusing her of contempt of Congress. The Ways and Means Committee announced that it will hold a vote Wednesday on whether to officially accuse Ms. Lerner of breaking the law by

A caveat right off the bat: RAND’s estimate only runs through March 28 whereas the actual deadline for signing up was March 31st. Given the crush of traffic on Healthcare.gov in late March, many more people could have signed up over those last three days than were captured by these numbers. On the other hand, the White House was claiming six million sign-ups as of March 27. There’s no way to reconcile that with RAND’s data. One of them is wrong. Maybe both, in fact. There’s a big spike in Medicaid, just as everyone expected. There’s a less big but
