Elite colleges confronting
failure of affirmative action

American Thinker, by Thomas Lifson

Original Article

A new report from researchers at Georgetown University must be horrifying diversicrats at elite colleges and universities. The report´s title, "Separate and Unequal: How Higher Education Reinforces the Intergenerational Reproduction of White Racial Privilege," gives away the conclusion of the study. Despite all the efforts at affirmative action, as a whole, the top tier of colleges is making racial inequality worse, rather than better. (snip) Sooner or later, history will note that affirmative action deeply damaged the progress blacks were already making in the pre-civil rights era.

To sum it all up, Liberal ideas are crap. They tell us how wonderful their "new" ideas are, but all they do is experiment on us with untried nonsense. Look what happened to Detroit. Let them go experiment on themselves with their own money for a change. I´ll stick with Conservative ideas that are tried and tested.

Unfortunately, liberal elites will take the wrong lesson from this report and double down, admitting even more unqualified minorities in the hope that some of them will graduate.

I had gone back to college in the 90s. While there, I ´´tutored´´ some of these kids. To put it bluntly, they had no chance in heck of ever graduating. Most dropped out before the first year was over. It is sheer idiocy to think people who are uneducated for the first 12 years of school can function in a college.

Examples: Most had never read a book in their life. Trying to read a college-level book took forever. They had to constantly stop to look up the definition of words - words like urge, ethic, definite, apply, and other simple concepts. Then they had to re-read the sentence to try to understand it with the new definition. Then they had to re-read the entire paragraph because they had lost the thread of it. Then they had to relearn the new words, because they forgot most of them already. I had one student take 3 hours to read one page.

Most could not name the state they were from. They knew their street and most knew the city, but they couldn´t find it on a map. Forget about doing any type of math. I had to teach one kid how to add and subtract. He never got it.

And with all of them, nothing was ever their fault.

So, here we go again with the term "white privilege". The article states college completion fuels privilege. Any definition of privilege includes the word "granted", as in a right or immunity "granted" as a benefit, advantage or favor. It is clear, the benefits that accompany college completion are not granted - they are earned by fulfilling the requirements for graduation. Period.

Those black students who work hard and become excellent are also ´tarred´ with the suspicion that their degrees are phony.

While there will always be a few Dr. Carsons, the black community, as a whole, appears to have chosen ignorance and hate.

It´s a very poor choice but trying to re-engineer them is to admit that they are less than equal.

If this doesn´t bother the Left, it should.

Decades ago, I met a man whose academic specialty was finding Indian kids who had failed the meet the requirements for the University of NM, and recruiting them for Universities in the NE like Amherst and Cornell which were thrilled to get Hopis, Navajos, Tewas and Zunis to fill out their diversity goals.

Well, imagine a struggling high school graduate from some tribal school in the Southwest spending a miserable year at the University of Vermont, desperately lonely, culturally alienated, and failing every course.

They´d drop out in a year or less, and return home to their parents´ disappointment and their own lasting shame. But the Fat Cat recruiter was making finder´s fees on every one of them, and the turnover was even more profitable to him, the faster they dropped out.

Maddening. Detestable. At least as regards justice, soul and honor, Affirmative Action kills.

FTA: In my opinion, the real motive for affirmative action in higher education is not helping the target minorities, it is helping the college look good and feel good.

================
The same is true of Head Start and countless other liberal programs. Efficacy is irrelevant. The purpose is to allow liberals to engage in self-congratulation over their benevolence.

They will double down on stupid, yet continue to denigrate the black who is excelling without their permission...ie the liberal plantation. It´s criminal what the libs are doing to blacks who are unprepared to succeed in college have yet another failure, while those who succeed are tarred with the affirmative action brush.

Is there an institution, for instance, that has more potential wonderfullness than the UN, and the League Of Nutters, er, Nations that was it´s underachieving mother?

Yes, some non-leftards could be said to be smart....but not whip-smart and beautiful.

... it´s just that they´ve Failed!
Political Correctness has morphed into Political Disability. Liberals simply cannot bring themselves to admit that their ideas are a load of road apples. To reinforce that they have attached the stigma of "racism" to anyone who challenges their thinking. As a result we have become a crippled nation of Politically Disabled Stupids that can´t read, write or do their ´rithmatic and in the interest of "fairness and equality" have brought the learning standards down for everyone else to about the level of a dog pound (no offense to rescue dogs).

As far as the principle of affirmative action goes, the liberals or progressives will just move the deck chairs around and go on with it, maybe by coming up with a new identity for it. They can´t dump affirmative action no matter how much of a failure it becomes. As the liberal Democrats will always need a big black vote to win elections.

This is surely one the most misguided ideas ever. It is setting people up for failure and also, to those who manage to graduate, devaluing their degree. Prime example: Michelle Obama. No one who is honest believes she got into Princeton and Harvard solely on her merit. And she never really succeeded at law, either.

I don´t think it´s helpful to say some races are smarter than others. There are smart and dumb people in every race. Just the other day, an African-American boy won on Kid´s Jeopardy. And the last Jeopardy Tournament of Champions winner was black. Not all Asians are smart or good at math. The point is that people should be judged on their merit, with the same standards applied to all. I don´t have any problem with a school wanting some diversity, but not if it means letting in some applicants with test scores or grade point averages that would automatically disqualify a white or Asian applicant.

Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)

Two white adults divided the toys, one equally and the other unequally. Seventy per cent of the toddlers chose to play with the researcher who distributed the toys fairly. But in a second test, when one researcher favoured a white recipient over an Asian one, they picked the ‘fair’ researcher less often, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports. Look, everyone loves Sean Connery, particularly Sean Connery. That’s why he plays Sean Connery in every movie he’s in. People love that Scottish brogue so much, they don’t mind that he has it when he plays Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, an immortal Spaniard in Highlander. The guy even won an Oscar for playing an Irish cop with a Scottish accent. Talk about sexist double standards: Meryl Streep has to master foreign dialects to get her golden statuettes. Connery just has to show up on time. In economics you devalue a currency by printing too much of it. In film you

Hank Aaron’s recent comments about the need for America to realize that racism is still very much alive and thriving — only now due to those who wear “neckties and starched shirts” rather than KKK hoods — has sparked an angry backlash and many fans are turning the tables, calling the baseball legend himself a racist. “Hank Aaron is a s*****g piece of [expletive] [racial slur],” one man said in an email to the Atlanta Braves’ front office, one of the teams Mr. Aaron used to play for, CBS News reported. “My old man instilled in my mind from a

Western Washington University sent a questionnaire to students asking them for advice on how the administration could succeed at making sure that in future years, “we are not as white as we are today.” The question notes that WWU’s racial make up does not perfectly reflect the nation at large, and asks students to consider strategies that other universities have used to focus on skin color as the paramount indicator of a student-applicant’s worth. The president of WWU has stated that his explicit goal is to reduce the white population on campus, according to Campus Reform. “I’ve said before and I’ll say it

Funny question in the headline, yes? But since President Obama worries more about the threat of terrorists´ improvised nuclear device going off in a major American city than anything Russia can throw at us, I was wondering if the government had deigned to share with us citizens any tips for, you know, surviving something their own intelligence points to as the likeliest unlikely Black Swan event. Well, no. And yes. No — very few people in Washington, D.C., who work for the government have any idea what they would do if a 10-kiloton nuclear device exploded at the intersection of 16th and K

When President Obama needed a preacher to fulfill the closing prayer duties at the annual White House Easter Prayer Breakfast, he turned to none other than the Episcopal Church’s first openly gay bishop — who said he was as shocked as anyone at the appointment. The Right Rev. Gene Robinson said in a tweet, accompanied by a photo of Mr. Obama behind a podium at the event: “POTUS ‘preaches’ at the Easter prayer breakfast. Then, out of the blue, asks ME to close with prayer. OMG!” Newsmax said he also emphasized that the words he chose to close the breakfast
