I have been studying the transcript of the recent New York Times interview of President Barack Obama. It is a remarkable document—remarkable not for the facts it contains, but for the way it reveals the mentalities of the participants. Remarkable, too, in so far as the transcript allows a curious reader to see, in detail, how journalism is manufactured. Through a process of extraction, distillation, production, transportation, and marketing no less sophisticated than the global supply chain that brings Southeast Asian textiles to your neighborhood big-box store, a rambling, snobbish, and platitudinous discussion between three well-compensated Washingtonians

FTA "A sort of pep talk to the liberal bourgeoisie, Democrat and Republican, is what the New York Times under Jill Abramson has become. One reads it to confirm rather than challenge one’s perceptions of the world." Brutal, but true.
Love Continetti´s interpretation of the exchange Obama has with interviewer over ´renowned sociologist Robert Putnam´ ,( Who???) What a small man the POTUS is he has to name drop AND one up his interviewer. Must read.
This type of elitism is everywhere. It is so hollow, so adolescent, so pretentious. I had an epiphany about this while watching the CBS Sunday morning show with George Stephanopoulos a few years ago. A Harvard professor (whom I and 99.9999% of America had never heard of before) by the name of Henry Louis Gates had been questioned by the Cambridge police after a neighbor reported seeing him break into a home. Although innocent of wrong-doing, he became obstreperous and was arrested. When asked to comment, Paul Krugman referred to him, ever so nonchalantly, as "Skip" Gates. I realized in that moment that knowing the man well enough to call him "Skip" was some sort of badge of honor - a Washington version of being on speaking terms with the quarterback of the high school football team when one is a member of the Math Club. And this immature behavior is everywhere in leadership and media these days. We really are being led and informed by cases of arrested development.
When you read an article that lays it out like this, it boggles the mind that so many seemingly intelligent people don´t want to know the truth. They are content in their little propaganda bubble because it is so warm and cozy. It doesn´t challenge their view of the world and allows them to remain cool and hip with the "in" crowd. Some people never move on from the high school mindset. They are forever seeking validation.
When GWB was in office I thought his name was President Will U. Criticize, because every question at every press conference asked him ´Will you criticize X for saying or doing Y?´
Beyond the obvious futility of such a question or formulation, it revealed the animus of the WH press jackals towards, as it turned out, a Republican president nevertheless imitating a Democrat as often as possible.
The NY Times is a relic. They are the Grand Army of the Republic for the 21st century both in terms of the media segment they represent and the mindset.
The reality is that while we rail against the Reids, Pelosis and Schumers, the irresistible tides of time and generations will sweep them away. Post-war babies had their party and their hangover and now want everyone else to clean up the mess and buy the aspirin. If and when we get our affairs in order it will be after these armchair lefties are gone.
This was highly entertaining, especially when I shared it with my hubby. I am the editor of a local magazine and write about businesses in our area, most of them are our advertisers. The articles are based around a long questionnaire we provide the customer.
Our articles, since the are often attached to advertising, are basically bought by the company which is using it to sell itself to our readers.
The comparison to the questions these two excuses-for-a-reporter asked, in tone -even in content- are remarkably like the questions I ask to those businesses - who pay hundreds of dollars a month in advertising for these pieces of fluff, BTW.
My hubby and I got such a laugh out of this pair of suck-up so-called "journalists" (what a lie that is!) who compared remarkably to us when we are writing fluffy paid-for stories!

#10 not just GWB, but GWHB as well. How many times did he hear from ´reporters´ - Will you bomb during Ramadan? A phrase never wish to hear uttered again. Looks like we´re good there. this pResident wouldn´t think to bomb during this holy holiday..and certainly not bomb his brothers
My my. A home run from Matthew. This president is so far above his pay grade it´s unbelievable. His petty small-mindedness would be remarkable in the busybody old crone down the street, but in a president? What a freaking loser this guy is.
I guess when you inhabit the New York-Washington corridor, are and/or know, all kinds of ivy league types, are on good terms with the president of the United States (a democrat ivy league one at that!), you get an air of (false) superiority where you think you know all you need to know. The group-think and the pomposity definitely show.
The Texas Republican Party is reopening the filing period for Rep. Steve Stockman´s (R-Texas) congressional district after his last-second decision to run instead against Sen. John Cornyn (R). Stockman filed for Cornyn´s seat rather than reelection just minutes before the state´s legal filing deadline Monday night, giving aspiring politicians in the district no heads up that he was doing so. The party´s move gives candidates an additional week, with the new filing deadline set for next Monday. Texas Republican Party spokesman Spencer Yeldell said the party was reopening the filing because it´s required by Texas´s election code. Stockman is facing a steep uphill
Hill staffers that signed up for ObamaCare through the Washington, D.C., healthcare exchange, called DC Health Link (DCHL), are being told to confirm their enrollments in person, and not to rely on data provided by the website. The Hill obtained an email sent to staffers on Wednesday warning them that “it is essential that you confirm your coverage in DCHL through the Disbursing Office.” “Do not rely on your ‘My Account’ page or other correspondence from DCHL,” the email reads. “Please do not assume you are covered unless you have seen the confirmation letter from the Disbursing Office,” the email continues. Hill workers had
The Obama administration expedited visa applications for about two dozen foreign investors for a Las Vegas casino hotel after pressure from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his staff, the Washington Times reported Tuesday. The Times, citing internal government documents, said the decision to overturn a prior, normally non-appealable visa decision ultimately benefited several companies whose executives have been heavy Democratic donors. The paper said it also came despite concerns about “suspicious financial activity” involving some Asian applicants. Reid, who represents Nevada, personally reached out to the top official at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Alejandro Mayorkas, setting in motion a process that
California’s budding doctor rebellion against Obamacare appears to be genuinely spontaneous, lacking leadership from a single individual or organization. As the Washington Examiner has reported in recent days, an estimated 70 percent of California´s physicians -- ranging from general practitioners to specialists -- are "just saying no" to Obamacare´s Covered California health insurance exchange. Although it appears leaderless, some observers believe that very spontaneity may make the doctor rebellion a formidable force in California’s health-care future. “Doctors are realizing what is happening and spontaneously they are acting like this. There’s a movement growing,” said Sally Pipes, president of the San Francisco-based
Democrats make a lot of silly statements. The trick isn’t finding a pronouncement by a liberal politician which — in a way nearly unique to politics — simultaneously brings a grimace, a giggle, and a groan, but figuring out whether the speaker is an outright liar or just living in a liberal echo chamber reminiscent of Pauline Kael (or at least the political mythology surrounding her). Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, is a reliable representative of the outright liar camp: No echo is loud enough to make her actually believe that Democratic candidates will
It’s long been said that Democrats and their supporters who cry “racism!” at everything that smells like opposition to their left-wing agenda are misguided, or in some cases, smear merchants who lack all credibility whatsoever (looking at you, MSNBC). Well, get a load of the T-shirt that this recently departed national figure – whose impeccable left-wing bonafides should never be doubted – has on:(Snip for photo)That’s anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela wearing a T-shirt that endorses getting an ID and voting in 1998. We’ll anxiously be waiting your apology. Oh wait, you won’t apologize, will you?
No, Obamacare isn’t Katrina for Democrats. Katrina was an act of God and/or nature, a phenomenon beyond the control of mere human beings, a catastrophe not of choice, but of nature’s necessity, outside the realm of man’s will. George W. Bush didn’t cause it to happen, nothing he did could have made it not happen, and he surely did not make it worse. The federal response wasn’t inspired, but the reason this mattered was that the mayor of New Orleans and the governor of Louisiana were not only perhaps the two stupidest people ever to hold public office, but the stupidest people
You know a president is in deep trouble when even an improving economy can’t boost his popularity. That’s the situation facing Barack Obama, as optimism about a less anemic recovery in the coming year has done nothing to halt the slide in his approval numbers. With every poll showing him in deep trouble, it’s time for the White House to call in reinforcements and that’s what they’ve done by getting former Bill Clinton chief of staff John Podesta to return to the West Wing as a counselor. Podesta, a veteran liberal ideologue as well as a friend of current White
Apparently having decided to embark upon a course of self-parody, the National Reconnaissance Office — the other NRO — sent out a press release sharing the logo for its new spy-satellite program, NROL-39. The image is that of an evil-looking giant octopus with its tentacles encircling the entire planet over the motto: Nothing Is beyond Our Reach.(Snip)Our relationship with the national-security and public-safety bureaucracies has changed. It used to be that you called the fireman to get your cat out of a tree; now the policeman shoots your dog. We have police rolling through the streets of such combat zones
Soweto, the Johannesburg suburb where popular resistance to apartheid set off the revolution that changed South Africa and established Nelson Mandela as the father of a new country, is the most dangerous place on the continent this week. Anyone who ventures into the street risks being crushed by the hordes of official visitors trying to get in front of a camera. It’s difficult for a hardworking president, prime minister, movie star, rap artist or mere dictator to set himself apart from the crowd of mourners, grievers and lamenters in town to exploit the ultimate photo-op. President Obama did it, however, with
It’s almost time for the first anniversary of the massacre in Sandy Hook. Naturally the Obama-run state media will be giving it round-the-clock coverage. Barack’s servile sycophants in the mainstream media will do anything to keep the low-information voters’ attention diverted from how they’re getting blued and tattooed by Dear Leader. As the common nightwalkers of the press get ready for their latest anti-gun crusade, let’s not forget who’s co-sponsoring the TV spots — Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG). This organization was founded by two mayors who are now lame ducks, one of whom is Mumbles Menino. The money guy behind MAIG is
On the five-year anniversary of Bernie Madoff outing himself as the world’s most notorious white-collar criminal, the financial world still hasn’t learned some simple lessons. First, business journalists should stop listening to the fraudster himself. His multibillion-dollar scam caused at least three people to take their own lives, including his son Mark — yet Madoff remains mostly unrepentant and uncooperative. He continues to blame “the greed of others” and loves to offer his opinions on how Wall Street really works. That wouldn’t be so bad if Madoff pulled a Sammy “the Bull” Gravano and came clean about his misdeeds by giving the
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
On his way to the podium at the memorial ceremony for former South African president Nelson Mandela, President Obama walked down the line of dignitaries, greeting other leaders there to pay their respects. Among the hands shaken: that of Cuban leader Raul Castro. Obama neither made a special effort to shake Castro’s hand nor to avoid him. A snub might have been awkward: In his speech, Obama praised Mandela’s “greatest gift” as “his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
The Obama State Department has finally released a second round of photos revealing the harrowing devastation wrought by a terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. The new photographs depict rampant damage to the consulate. They show charred walls, smoldering fires, Arabic graffiti defacing exterior walls, and scattered debris throughout. The extent of the damage would lead any reasonably serious person to conclude that this was a cold, calculated attack, carefully coordinated to mark the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Unfortunately for the American people, the Obama-Clinton-Rice cabal that led to the Benghazi cover-up was
A black fashion student says he was brutally attacked by a gang of Hasidic men who shouted anti-gay slurs at him while he was walking through Williamsburg after a night of partying, the Daily News has learned. Taj Patterson, 22, was headed home to Fort Greene around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he says more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jewish men began assaulting him on Flushing Ave. and yelling, “Stay down, f----t!”
A “presidential selfie” featuring President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service began making the rounds this morning, but it’s the person not included in the frame who caught everyone’s attention: As anyone with two eyes and a Twitter account has noticed, Michelle Obama does not appear amused. Of course, though a picture says a thousand words, not all of those words are necessarily true. FLOTUS might not have even known the photo was taking place. Or she could disapprove of funeral selfies. Either way.
President Obama’s job approval among American voters has dropped to negative territory with just 38 percent voicing their approval versus the 58 who says they disapprove, according to a national poll released Tuesday by the independent Quinnipiac University. That is one percent less than the 39% who said they approved of him in last month’s poll. The majority of the 2,692 registered voters the University in early December said that the president is not honest and trustworthy. When asked, “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as President?,” respondents gave Obama lackluster ratings
Looks like this president can’t get away with flirting in front of his wife… It appears that first lady Michelle Obama was none too pleased with the way that President Barack Obama was acting toward Denmark Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt during a ceremony honoring Nelson Mandela, and before too long, they switched seats. Barack Obama has arrived in South Africa to lead the American delegation at a memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg. But his party is reportedly stuck in traffic and he is said to have arrived late at the stadium for the ceremony. The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela´s memorial yesterday "made up his own signs," according to South Africa´s deaf federation. "He´s a complete fraud," Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town, said according to ITV News. "He wasn´t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter at DeafSA, told Reuters:
