Weiner’s Behavior Prompts a
Question: Why Did He Do It?

New York Times, by Kate Taylor and Javier C. Hernandez

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 7/30/2013 1:42:00 PM

As Anthony D. Weiner tries to repair the damage left by new revelations about his online behavior with women, one question nags at voters and those who once supported him: Why did he do it? Why did Mr. Weiner, who already forfeited his Congressional seat and imperiled his marriage, return to social media sites and send explicit messages and photos to strangers? Did he discount the risks to his family, his reputation and his career, or not understand them?

Why? Because he could, and because he can. He is the type of person where he needs to have his ego stroked. Its as simple as that.

The question "How could he do it?" is a common one asked about addicts of all kinds by people who are unfamiliar with addiction. Such spectators look at the irrational, dangerous, often self-destructive behavior and ask: How could he do it - again? And again ... and again... It doesn´t make sense. It seems crazy. It is crazy. There is something wrong with people who behave this way repeatedly, whether with alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, spending, food or other things. They are not normal. Normal people do not act this way.

Weiner is an obvious sexual compulsive exhibitionist. His run for mayor, insane as it seems to most people, is part of his exhibitionism - a symptom of what ails him. He is a sick man. He needs help - but it is the nature of his sickness that he cannot comprehend this, no matter what others may say to him. We can be confident people who care about him -there must be at least a few- have been pleading with him to call a halt to this bizarre public self-immolation. Even people who don´t care about him, who are connected with him some way politically, are pleading with him to desist. He is attracting attention to matters they would rather not have too closely examined, e.g. his wife, her background, the relationship with the Clintons, etc. Weiner is also an embarrassment to national Democrats because it is possible to claim that Democrats who support him have no morals or values when it comes to sex. Of course everybody already knew that - but Weiner and his supporters are really rubbing it in.

Were Weiner having a satisfying sexual relationship with his wife he would not be doing these things. The fact that he was indicates that he has a very unsatisfactory marriage and he is seeking some kind of fulfillment elsewhere. To think he could do such blatant things and get away with them indicates a level of maturity that is very poorly developed. He may be an adult but he is acting like a child. He needs to leave the scene and get a job, any job, somewhere he could blend in with the population. San Francisco comes to mind.

ROME - Pope Francis washed the feet of 12 disabled and elderly people Thursday - women and non-Catholics among them - in a pre-Easter ritual designed to show his willingness to serve others like a "slave." Francis´ decision in 2013 to perform the Holy Thursday ritual on women and Muslim inmates at a juvenile detention center helped define his rule-breaking papacy just two weeks after his election. It riled traditionalist Catholics, who pointed to the Vatican´s own regulations that the ritual be performed only on men since Jesus´ 12 apostles were men.

In Detroit´s unfolding saga, the only innocent victims are city residents. So if there is any case for a Motown bailout, it is to make the city more livable for them. Most voters think the White House is trying to cover-up what happened in Benghazi and want Congress to continue to investigate the administration’s handling of the attack on the U.S. consulate there that killed four Americans. That’s down from 65 percent who felt that way in November, and a high of 73 percent in early June 2013.
