Connecticut police refused to send

Connecticut police decided against sending a hostage negotiator to the home of the Petit family on the morning they were brutally murdered, it has emerged. Jennifer Hawke-Petit was raped and strangled to death and her daughters, Hayley, 17, and Michaela, 11, were tied to their beds and died when the house in Cheshire was set alight on July 23, 2007. The girls´ father, Dr. William Petit was beaten and tied up but escaped the flames, living to see Joshua Komisarjevsky and Stephen Hayes be sentenced to death in 2011 for the murders. They were also outside the home when the

Why would anyone want to have firearms on their person or in the house, when the police are ready to stand by in an emergency?

Staggering story, details revealed only 6 years later.

I hope you are really proud of your police, Connecticut. This whole incident was fishy from the get go in terms of the police behavior. There needs to be some heads rolling and pensions yanked over this.

They cower behind cars and trees(Columbine) and will not rescue people and then wonder why people are arming themselves. To know that the police are outside your house but refusing to rescue you has to be just agonizing to think about in your last moments.

This story can still bring me to tears.
Knowing this for certain makes an unimaginably horrific chain of events even worse. I agree with #1 that the actions of the police in this case were questionable from the beginning.

I´m just glad Dr. Petit has been able to make a new life for himself.

And now, some perspective. Let it be said that I see this as being incredibly and tragically mishandled. But to say the "Connecticut police" screwed up is ignorant and/or factually incorrect.

Consider this: from the Town of Chesire´s website:

"The department is comprised of five divisions with 49 sworn officers, five civilian dispatchers, four civilian administrative personnel, one full-time and one part-time Municipal Animal Control staff. "

To be sure, I´m not trying to defend the Cheshire Police Department - but this article greatly oversimplifies one important facet of this horrendous case: they were in over their heads, and should have called the state police for help. In my opinion.

My husband and I watched through our window as a young guy, who was renting a room in the house next door, beat up his girlfriend and chased her around inside(she was screaming and passed out at one point). We called the PD, who dispatched 6 cars and a captain, who all proceeded to stand around after the guy would not come out (the girl had already run outside). They refused to take him into custody because they claimed they couldn´t enter his room...even with permission of the owner who gave them a key, and our statement. This after hours of his screaming out a window, calling them and the neighbors names and threatening all of us (at 3 am). That is the day I gave up on them. The tragedy in CT is all the more disgusting in light of these new facts. Arm yourself.

#5 I agree they were in over their heads. However, Mrs. Petit would have been known at the bank. She was a respectable, middle aged lady who was suffering with MS. Her statement should have been taken seriously by local law enforcement. I doubt it would have changed the outcome. These two were vile scum. They should have been taken out and shot after the guilty verdicts.

...saw the documentary on last night concerning this. Far more detail then the article dealt with. Such as the teller in the bank saw the driver, who was wearing a hoodie covered with another covering on top. The cops were there much sooner then first beleived, and then jsut sat outside...

...if they got off their fat donuts, there is a good chance all three could have lived. They were there before he fire started and could have changed the events if they made it known to the killers...

...OF COURSE, they didn´t want to review it...

#9 ~ At VA TECH what you recall, though imperfectly due to the university´s obfuscation, was not the reluctance of the cops to enter the building but the inability of the cops to get in.

This had been an R&D facility and was not designed primarily for classroom use.

The killer had managed to jimmy the main entry doors with a chain ~ and the impact resistant glass was layered with internal chickenwire making it difficult to break open without special tools.

Other doors were equally secure.

The door and door lock design were considered obsolete at the time according to current building codes. That had been the case since shortly after the facility was opened in the 1960s.

Once the cops got the door open they went in. By then the killer had done his foul deeds.

The university´s attornies sought to limit their share of the damages by simply ignoring this aspect of the situation ~ and the plaintifs´ attornies simply failed to pursue it.

The building is no longer used for classes ~ but I have no idea if they ever brought the doors up to modern code requirements.

I still get heartsick when I think of the police milling around outside the house while those two monsters assaulted the mother and two little girls in a Clockwork Orange scenario.

The CT police, much like the police at Columbine were more concerned about their own welfare than the welfare of the family.

Listen carefully next time there is a similar tragedy in progress and you will hear.......oh, they are looking for a second shooter. This givds the police an excuse not to get inside to save the victims.
