Paula Deen´s sons Bobby and Jamie have leaped to their mother´s defense in her racial-slur scandal, saying she´s a good person who´s being unjustly maligned. "That word, that horrifying, terrible word that exists and I abhor it coming from any person ... we weren´t raised in a home where that word was used," Bobby Deen told CNN´s New Day program on Tuesday – referring to the N-word, which Paula Deen has admitted in a legal deposition to having used in the past. "Neither one of our parents ever taught us to be bigoted toward any other person
My daughter graduated from an elite Northern Womens College. Her advisor, the daughter of black commedian Richard Pryor. Since she was from the South, her advisor asked her to write a paper on the first time she ever heard the N Word.
It turned out the first time my daughter remembered hearing the N Word was when I brought home a copy of Blazing Saddles. And, the primary writer of that screenplay was: Richard Pryor!
Rappers and Chris Rock use racial slurs all the time and get paid for it so I don´t see the big dust up. I don´t care what hurts black´s feeling anymore they have showed their racist side so they aren´t important to me or my thoughts about this nothing burger.
She should tell them all to go to he$$, continue to run her resturant (which will still have more than enough patrons), and use the money she has earned to enjoy the remainder of her life. BTW, doing so free of the self-rightous jerks and morons that populate large sections of this nation. The a$$es making a big deal of this don´t mean very much to most Southerners anyway
Paula Deen is an American treasure because she has worked hard to build the business she has now, raised two decent sons, and entertains the masses. She overcame great personal obstacles (for example, for many years she was afraid to come out of the house and go anywhere).
What this treasure said years ago means nothing today. It is how she behaves today that matters.
If you´re so inclined, go buy something Paula Deen this week. Show the Leftists (aka Communists) that their nonsense floats about as well as a log in a punch bowl.
She has apologized, what more do these people want?
When I was young and had just moved to Texas, our neighbor´s elderly granny would visit a lot. She was from East Texas, just a darling, sweet person and would do anything for you or anybody. We were talking one day and she casually used that word; I about dropped my teeth! It wasn´t used in an ugly manner, it was just how it was in the South to older people.
I watched her because she does stuff that a lot of us do when it comes to cooking. Having said that, I hate it when she goes overboard with Yall. I use it too but geez, not that much! Too bad shes a Obama supporter.
This should be about how well she cooks, right? Bill Clinton was an adulterer and perjurer, yet people said it was his private life and it didn´t matter as long as he did his job. Why is Paula Dean given the same consideration?
It no longer matters whether Deen has sufficiently apologized or whether her fans think she was unfairly targeted or whether anyone has "forgiven" her or whether other celebrities or policians have done worse. She is tarnished goods to her sponsors, her networks, her publisher. They don´t exist to help employees refurbish an image. It´s over for Paula Deen, at least the Paula Deen of the last several years.
PR rehab tour. Get the "boys" out there to keep making Paula look like a victim - check. What choice as they have jobs because of Paula. Paula on Today show to grovel and announce $$$$ to a black "awareness" forum, fund, etc. Both big mistakes. She is behaving like a typical Democrat.
Personally, I don´t consider her an American treasure. I consider her an American success story with a trash mouth and nasty sense of humor who is protected by the 1st Amendment as am I. The company which employed her has every right to no longer employer her if she no longer fits their business model. I have every right to no longer support their business model, and I don´t. Paula Deene will do fine but she´ll do it with abject apologies and lots of cash given to Democrats. So be it.
People being offended by Paula Deen´s fat laden recipes on Food Network makes me laugh. How about the Barefoot Contessa´s (Ina Garten) Couer a la Creme; Take 12 0z of cream cheese, 2 1/2 cups heavy cream, 1 1/4 cups confectioner´s sugar, etc. Ina is twice the size of Paula. Not that I use those recipes or watch Food Network as we ditched cable and have no TV to watch now, but do remember It´s Entertainment. Paula Deen may vote Democrat, but her real sin is that, as a liberal publication said, She is the Queen of Southern comfort cooking. She really isn´t of the "cool crowd of liberals" and getting rid of the country bumpkin cousin probably makes them very happy.
And #24, why the hate? Have you never heard of companies with names like John Cook & sons, for an instance? I have. Those sons were in the business since they were young. I respect that, and they love their mother and are probably devastated at the beating she is taking.
I enjoy Paula Deen´s cookbooks very much. I have watched her shows on The Food Network for many years. I was raised on comfort food. I enjoy seeing recipes that I can find the ingredients for in my cupboard. The FN has slowly reprogrammed their schedule to add more shows that use products that you would have to be a detective to find in any market i.e chopped, iron chef, etc. Paula Deen, the Neelys and PW are scheduled for early weekend mornings and most of the time you have to record them. Paula Deen worked her way up and deserves the fruits of her labor. But, as with all successful people, there will always be those who are resentful and jealous and will look for ways to tear them down. Shame on these petty small people.
They might as well administer a lashing to all southerners of A Certain Age because the word was almost universally used in my childhood. I always hated it and don´t remember using it though almost all adults did from time to time and most everyone else. I have nothing against Mrs. Deen (and believe her ex-husband must have been related to my father´s old secretary´s husband). Like so many other southern lo-fo´s, being a Dem was all she knew. My conservative father would never came right out and admit voting Republican though no doubt he did for decades from the way he talked. Anyway, I do feel the rap against her is ridiculous in the extreme though also inevitable given "the current climate" and the fact that she naively blurted out the simple truth, which of course no one would understand. As for the plantation/slave scenario she dreamed up and divulged - I´ve run out of excuses for her; except that the woman must have been living deep in her own phantasy world devoid of the Thought Police the rest of us realize we´re subject to.
This whole kerfuffle could allegedly be stemming from an interview done with the Daily Mail in 2011 after a guest appearance by none other than Michelle Obama.
Evidently, Paula made the mistake of commenting on the fact that Michelle just could not stop eating, on camera, and off. Paula supposedly made a remark about how she had never seen someone eat so much in her life.
This could all be payback for that little incident.
what the left is doing to her is unbelievable, but this is nothing new as they have done the same to so many Conservative Americans over the past 5 years. This makes for a great challenge when it comes to sympathy for Paula and her family. This is the world she helped to create - Paula, perhaps if you change your name to Sarah, you might cut yourself some slack. Not that Sarah didn´t get the same treatment, but she did know how to throw a punch back. Call her for a few tips.
It was a fight to the death, but in this case there were two winners. Barack Obama continued a White House tradition today when he pardoned two turkeys destined for the Thanksgiving dinner table. But it was his 12-year-old daughter Sasha who almost stole the show today in a bold outfit including red jeans and green Doc Marten boots with yellow laces. Two birds from Badger, Minnesota, named Popcorn and Caramel ended up as the lucky pair pardoned by Obama, although only the former got to meet face-to-face with the President. Obama joked at the ceremony that his office carries
The Obama administration announced Wednesday it would delay a significant piece of the health-care law: the online small business insurance marketplace. The Small Business Health Options Program, known as the SHOP exchange, will not offer online enrollment until November 2014, a one-year delay from a launch that was initially planned for this past October.Administration officials characterized the decision as one made necessary as they prioritized fixes to the individual health exchange, which the White House has promised will "work smoothly for the vast majority of users" by Dec. 1. "What´s important in our work is to continue to prioritize the
The knock on the lefty blogosphere in its early years was that it made a lot of noise but accomplished very little. Since 2006 or so, however, the netroots´ influence on the Democratic party has grown steadily, to the point that on Monday, Daily Kos founder and publisher Markos Moulitsas could crow that the Senate´s weakening of filibuster rules via the so-called nuclear option was "perhaps [Daily Kos´s] greatest activism victory in its decade-long existence." Kos wrote: ...We were laughed at when we first advocated filibuster reform, but over the years, more and more progressives joined the cause...Our final one,
The Affordable Care Act’s Hindenburg-like debut has been characterized a series of spectacular failures, the latest being an attempt by President Barack Obama’s political arm, Organizing for America, to furnish their followers with effective pro-ACA talking points. This army of true believers was instructed to bombard their unsuspecting kin with counterpoints to deflect the unceasing stream of bad ACA news screaming at them from the television set. It was a noble effort, albeit one that was mocked furiously on the right. But it wasn’t conservatives that scuttled this operation. It was the mortifying inability of the ACA’s infrastructure to back
The Bay Psalm Book, believed to be the first book printed in what is now the US, sold at Sotheby´s auction house in New York for $14.2 million (£8.8m) on Tuesday evening. Only 11 copies of the Bay Psalm Book survive in varying degrees of completeness. It was bought by American businessman and philanthropist David Rubenstein, who plans to lend it to libraries around the country. A copy of John James Audubon´s Birds of America was the previous record-holder. It sold for $11.5m (£7.1m) at Sotheby´s in 2010. The book is one of two owned by Boston´s Old South Church.
Family members probably shouldn’t talk politics at the Thanksgiving dinner table, but some things can’t be helped. Seeing this, the Democratic National Committee put out a guide Wednesday for “Talking Politics with Your Republican Uncle,” which attempts to beat back conservatives’ complaints about President Obama. “Don’t get me wrong — I love the Republicans in my life. But nothing ruins a slice of pecan pie faster than talking through immigration reform with a cousin who spends too much time listening to Rush Limbaugh,” DNC Digital Director Matt Compton said in a message to Democrats. “We can’t do anything about highway
More than 600 teachers and classroom aides looking to get an early start to the Thanksgiving holiday weekend skipped school Tuesday in San Francisco, leaving officials desperate to find substitutes. In the San Francisco Unified School District, 432 teachers – around 12 percent of its instructional workforce – called in sick or took a personal day, SFgate.com reports. District data showed that a few were off for bereavement or training, but 179 special education and preschool aides also were not in schools Tuesday. Officials at the district tried to find substitutes to fill all their roles, but fell short. The district
When I was a teenager, my mother broke her own rule of never buying someone else’s trouble and purchased a used car. We were quite excited because it was beautiful and sleek, and it was a convertible. The salesman said the car was practically new and was the deal of the century. Before long, it was discovered that the engine was completely shot, and the car was essentially a beautiful piece of junk. The salesman did not know my mother, and in the end, gladly refunded her money and took the car back. This kind of story is, of course,
The botched rollout of Barack Obama´s signature health care law continues to take a political toll on the president. The latest evidence is a Quinnipiac University survey released Wednesday morning showing the president´s approval rating hitting a record low of 34 percent in Ohio. Obama´s disapproval rating has jumped to an all-time high of 61 percent. This represents a significant decline from Quinnipiac´s last poll in Ohio on June 26, when Obama recorded a 40 percent approval rating and a 57 percent disapproval rating. The president´s personal credibility has also taken a serious hit, thanks to his broken pledge that
A top Iranian military leader announced late Tuesday that Iran has developed “indigenous” ballistic missile technology, which could eventually allow it to fire a nuclear payload over great distances. Brigadier General Hossein Salami, the lieutenant commander of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), made the critical weapons announcement just days after Iran and the West signed a deal aimed at curbing the country’s nuclear activities. Salami claimed that “Iran is among the only three world countries enjoying an indigenous ballistic missile technology,” according to the state-run Fars News Agency. “Many countries may have access to cruise missiles technology, but
In the spirit of the holiday, I herein serve up celebratory thoughts on some political "turkeys" of 2013. And save the cracks about how all Daily News commentary and political reporting belong at or near the top of any such list. Let´s just get to it. It goes without saying, or should, that the failed rollout of Obamacare and the collateral damage done to faith in government, the administration and the president is a giant gobbler. I´m talking turkus terrificanus. It is, to borrow from the actor/author Wallace Shawn, "inconCEIVable" ("The Princess Bride," 1987) that this president could so damage
WASHINGTON — I dreamed of Peyton Manning. In my dream, I was trying to shield him from the bitter wind in Foxborough. But he still looked like a frozen block of ice, with a red nose and watery eyes. Yet it was so much better than my usual nightmares about President Ted Cruz that I wondered why I hadn’t started watching football a long time ago. When my sports-crazy family would drone on about football at holidays, I would sometimes slip into a bedroom to take a break with Jane Austen. I had no interest in hearing about sulky brutes
Everyone has a favorite recipe, find it in the back of a kitchen drawer, call your mom, see if you still have that dog-eared copy of the Joy of Cooking. It´s on the back of an old electric bill stuck inside the back cover. Find it and post it for all your LCom friends. If you have a special request let us know, someone can find it somewhere.
Those who wrote the PPACA legislation were much more brilliant than most conservatives have given them credit for. They have hidden a landmine in the way it all works that will ensure an eventual takeover of the entire health care industry by the government. Let me first clarify my professional interest. I have been a vendor of software and services to both insurance companies and providers, and therefore have a deep understanding of the health care industry and what the ACA will do to it. I do not work for any insurance companies or medical providers, nor do I own stock
Iranian officials say that the White House is misleading the public about the details of an interim nuclear agreement reached over the weekend in Geneva. Iran and Western nations including the United States came to an agreement on the framework for an interim deal late Saturday night in Geneva. The deal has yet to be implemented. The White House released a multi-page fact sheet containing details of the draft agreement shortly after the deal was announced. However, Iranian foreign ministry official on Tuesday rejected the White House’s version of the deal as “invalid” and accused Washington
It is no secret that the Democrat party is hemorrhaging support in the wake of the disastrous ObamaCare rollout. As the Administration warns that the website will not be fully operational at the end of November, nervous Democrats are expected to try to separate themselves from Obama and his flawed health program. Politico´s Mike Allen was on MSNBC this week, saying that they are "hearing" that Democrats will be very aggressive against the program in Congressional oversight hearings next week. If Politico is "hearing" something, it means Democrats are trying to leak the information to the public ahead of the
Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman (R) left the door open to another presidential run during a Monday panel in New Hampshire. Asked whether he ever thinks about running again — Huntsman dropped out of the 2012 Republican primary after finishing third in New Hampshire — he suggested he hadn´t ruled out the option. He closed a long response to the question, posed at Saint Anselm College, by saying: "Which is a long way of saying that I love public service. I´ll always be committed to public service. And as an itinerant public servant, from time to time, it´s hard to know where
SANFORD, Fla. — George Zimmerman had five guns and more than 100 rounds of ammunition with him when deputies arrested him earlier this month on domestic violence charges, according to court documents released Tuesday. A search warrant made public by the Seminole County court clerk shows that Zimmerman had a 12-gauge shotgun, an AR-15 assault rifle and three handguns when he was arrested Nov. 18 at his girlfriend´s house. The girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, told deputies that Zimmerman pointed a shotgun at her during an argument and also used it to smash her coffee table. Zimmerman is free on $9,000 bail on charges
Maybe it was something about what they served in the White House mess in the 1990s. Or perhaps it´s what happens to baby boomer Democrats more than a decade after leaving office. For whatever the reason former vice president Al Gore has gone vegan, just like the president with whom he once served. Gore´s recent decision to forgo animal products surfaced as an offhand reference in a Forbes magazine piece about Hampton Creek Foods, an upscale vegan product line carried in Whole Foods. Ryan Mac´s article, which posted Saturday, chronicled how wealthy investors including Bill Gates, Tom Steyer and Vinod Khosla
Alec Baldwin has been fired by MSNBC, sources say. The rage-aholic’s weekly show, “Up Late With Alec Baldwin,” has been canceled because of the actor’s foul-mouthed rant at a photographer he called a nasty name. “The decision has been made. He’s gone,” an insider at the cable channel told me. “The [parent company] Comcast guys have decided. Word is spreading through the building.” Baldwin’s dismissal was decided on partly because of his diva-like behavior toward co-workers, a source said.
President Obama lashed out Tuesday at Republican lawmakers during a Hollywood speech seemingly designed to shift public debate away from his Obamacare - and Iran-related political train wrecks and toward safer territory: jobs and the economy. [Snip] ´Instead of rooting for failure or re-fighting old battles, Republicans in Congress need to work with us,´ he declared, complaining about his opponents´ fixation on the Affordable Care Act. ´We would be a lot further along without some of this dysfunction and obstruction we´ve seen in Washington,´ he insisted,.´if we didn´t [sic] have one wing of one party that was a little less
President Barack Obama told a Democratic fundraiser in Beverly Hills Tuesday that he has accomplished "as much, if not more" than any other president."Over the last five years, thanks to the leadership of Nancy (Pelosi) and Harry (Reid) and legislators who are here, we have accomplished as much, if not more, than any time in our history -- saving an economy from a Great Depression; revitalizing an auto industry that is producing better cars and has come roaring back like nobody believed; doubling our exports; drastically reducing our dependence on foreign oil; doubling fuel efficiency standards; doubling our production of
A new study of methane emissions finds that the U.S. is spewing 50 percent more methane, a greenhouse gas 21 times better at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere than the Environmental Protection Agency previously assumed. Several factors contribute to the accumulation of methane gas in Earth’s atmosphere, such as the burning of fossil fuels and leaks from oil and gas refining and drilling, but one contender stands out above the rest as particularly repugnant: cow farts.(snip)According to the new research, livestock’s noxious flatulence accounts for a large portion of the methane gas being released into the atmosphere.
Economics: It seems the official position of Pope Francis is that the free market is a wicked enemy that must be restrained. With all due respect, he´s mistaken. The free market has been a heavenly blessing. Two days before our American Thanksgiving, the Argentinian pontiff, in his first apostolic exhortation, called the free market a "new tyranny." "Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world," he wrote in the Vatican report. Claims of free-market success, he said, have "never been confirmed
