Declining membership fiscal woes
among problems facing Girl Scouts

NEW YORK – Given the friction and financial woes facing the Girl Scouts these days, perhaps it´s time for a giant friendship circle. Under that long-standing tradition, a ring of Scouts clasp hands and give a little squeeze, accompanied by a silent wish of good will. Just a year after its centennial celebrations, the Girl Scouts of the USA finds itself in a different sort of squeeze. Its interconnected problems include declining membership and revenues, a dearth of volunteers, rifts between leadership and grassroots members, a pension plan with a $347 million deficit,

Same decline as the Episcopal Church and the Catholic Church and all those who have sacrificed principles for popularity.
Thank God we still have the Salvation Army.

So when we buy cookies, we´re really paying somebody´s pension and not helping the Girl Scouts? The article says they are also in the process of selling camps. I´m sure it has nothing to do with the pension shortfall..../s

That pretty much says it all right there.

The girl scouts turned themselves into a recruitment tool for lesbians years ago and have been in decline ever since. The boy scouts saw how successful this recruitment program was for the girl scouts and decided to follow suit. I suspect that the boy scouts may experience decline more rapidly.

Sounds like the new leaser is part of the problem:

FTA:Under her leadership, a new set of handbooks seeks to nurture such attributes as environmental awareness, healthy lifestyles and critical thinking. New programs seek to boost girls´ competency with money matters and encourage them to pursue careers in science and technology.

I thought Girl Scouts was to have fun with other girls - make crafts, go swimming, horseback riding, plant a garden, etc... They want to turn it into a re-education camp.

I think churches should get in the business of all-volunteer in-house troops instead of encouraging kids to join the Girl Scouts. Anything that gets too big gets away from its original purpose. I think both the Girl and Boy Scouts are being run by those who want to meddle with social engineering instead of letting kids be kids.

How many boys and girls want to go to a meeting and say, "I´m gay, and you have to like it." I´ll bet they really want to camp, make cars out of balsa wood and learn how to be self-sufficient.

I can see where the scouts would need a pension plan for the staff of the main headquarters but under no circumstances can I conceive of a pension plan for them ever being large enough to accumulate such a huge deficit. That is a mindbogglingly top heavy organization.

When you buy girl scout cookies, there are many people along the line that get their "cut". The local troops makes about 35-50 a box, depending upon the council rules.

The main reason the girl scouts have seen big declines are this: A very hard-left direction away from "traditional American values", the change in focus of the program of instruction, and they have "gone corporate" and run things "like a business".

They really tend to shun people directly tied to working with girls from running things. They have a very small amount of their top corporate leadership who actually were involved in scouting.

The HUGE emphasis upon girls participating in sports activities, causes many of them to leave scouting when they get to the middle school/junior high years.

You don´t see the girl scouts being targeted by the gay coalition--no need to try to bring them down.

Good causes tend to evolve into rackets. A central leadership starts to appropriate the available wealth, promote only people with similar views, detail every activity, and demand compliance with its mandates.

Public Relations and fund raising becomes the main activity.

Over decades the erosion continues. Few organizations escape it.

No need to discuss the decay of bad causes.

FTA: The biggest change — implemented from 2006 to 2009 by Chavez´ predecessor, Kathy Cloninger — was a realignment that slashed the number of local councils from 312 to 112.
---------------------------

That is to control the remaining ones more easily. FTA: "Questioning authority is very much frowned upon,"

In short those in charge do not want parents having anything to do with their children in the Girl Scouts.

Pension plan that had a surplus but now a huge deficit. Someone is skimming money.

Selling off summer camps. They want to fill your kids head with socialist mush instead.

If lawmakers in Springfield thought they maneuvered beyond the treacherous topic of pension reform with their December votes to begin rescuing the state´s floundering pension system, they thought wrong. Chicago, with its enormously underfunded pension plans, is next in line. Election Day is almost nine months off. But right now Republicans seem almost certain to hold the House of Representatives and are likely to take the Senate. Which raises the inevitable question: How might the GOP seize defeat from the jaws of victory? Two occasions stand out, two obvious obstacles ahead that could lead to disastrous Republican stumbles, two pitfalls on the path to a happy GOP Election Day. Republicans are pretty good at falling into such pits. One is the increase in the debt limit, which Congress will have to deal with in the next month or two. The other

DENVER - Amendment 66, the K-12 education funding measure, has failed in Colorado. Even in Democratic strongholds of Boulder and Denver counties, the measure was failing or barely even. Amendment 66 constitutionally and statutorily would alter Colorado law to change how the state funds education. Firstly, it raises the state individual income tax rate from 4.63 percent to 5 percent on the first $75,000 of taxable income. That is equivalent to $472.5 if you earn exactly $75,000 in taxable income per year. If you earn more, any income beyond the $75,000 is taxed at a rate of 5.9 percent.

These middle-class consumers are staring at hefty increases on their insurance bills as the overhaul remakes the healthcare market. Their rates are rising in large part to help offset the higher costs of covering sicker, poorer people who have been shut out of the system for years. Although recent criticism of the healthcare law has focused on website glitches and early enrollment snags, experts say sharp price increases for individual policies have the greatest potential to erode public support for President Obama´s

Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)
