Paula Deen´s Food Network
contract won´t be renewed

CBS News, by Staff

Original Article

Posted By:SoCalGal, 6/21/2013 5:45:47 PM

The Food Network said Friday it´s dumping Paula Deen, barely an hour after the celebrity cook posted a videotaped apology online begging forgiveness from fans and critics troubled by her admission to having used racial slurs in the past. The 66-year-old Savannah kitchen celebrity has been swamped in controversy since court documents filed this week revealed Deen told an attorney questioning her under oath last month that she has used the N-word. "Yes, of course," Deen said, though she added, "It´s been a very long time."

Comments:
Never cared for her on television and my impression didn´t change after I met her.

I, too, never cared much for Deen but she is getting absolutely no credit at all for having given an honest answer to a question at a court deposition. She has too much class to lie in court, unlike the classless PC crowd who is just looking for their next victim. I hear the n word more and more in everyday life. I wonder why? (s/o)

Re OP Comment, that said I believe she is a victim of today´s overheated PC, chip-on-shoulder-I-dare-you-to-knock-it-off society. Certain people have been given too much power. The pendulum has swung to the absurd.

66 years of age. Maybe the Food Network was looking for an excuse? Anyone for an age-discrimination suit?

She is from the South--hate to admit it but my sister lives down there and still uses that word. Food Network is wrong in this case.

A bit of an overreaction by Food Network, she fessed up, apologized. It´s okay for Bill Maher to call downs children retarded but heaven forbid that an old lady used the N word years ago. Well I guess they will just fill her timeslot with Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives or some other over exposed show. Maybe they can come up with another contest type they already have that Food Network Star, Chopped, Iron Chef and super Iron Chef (just kidding) but they are all running together and are now just boring.

She is being dumped for using the N word a long time ago. Maher used the R word two weeks ago in a joke and personal attack on the Palin family. Some how he still has a job. Two standards.

I knew the word was radioactive, but this is ridiculous. If we fired everyone who ever used he word, unemployment would top 99%. Has Joseph Conrad been taken out of libraries because of the title of one of his most compelling books? Was Huckleberry Finn a racist? Can we use an obsolescent term for miserly? Bottom line- use of the term harms no one, but don´t try it.

Paula is getting shafted by somebody who was just looking to get rid of her. It is not just in the South where that word is used but most of those hypocrites in the north use it too. Walk through neighborhoods in Boston, then come back and tell me you never heard it. And who are the biggest hypocrites of all? Why the blacks, who use the word all the time then play victim when they catch wind of somebody in the white community doing the same! Bull crap!

Don´t know about this witch, but there was another one "Barefoot Contessa". Some young child from "Make a Wish" asked to be on her show. We are talking maybe zero of her time or money. She turned the kid down.

I have seen the same kind of stuff on Car Shows "American Hot Rods" A "Make a Wish" kid asks to make a car. Everything stops, everything comes to a dead halt. He makes his car. Probably cost: 100K. Car is later gifted on Barrett Jackson Auctions.

Folks, these cooking folks ditches are worse than they look, and more. Turn them off.

I agree with #3. I think Paula Deen was chosen as a target because she has deep pockets. I don´t hear anyone complaining about the endless use of the n-word by rappers. Oh, that´s right, she´s just the wrong race. The woman who brought the lawsuit is white so I don´t quite understand how that was discrimination by Paula using that word. I´m tired of these perfect, self-righteous leftists who act like they´ve never uttered a word that is offensive. I have never been a big fan of Paul Deen´s but I think this has been blown way out of proportion considering the millions of dollars she has brought to Foodnetwork. I think they should have let things cool down before making this decision. She has many, many fans who will be very unhappy.

Fired for not being black. Clearly, she use a term that only a black is allowed to use with impunity.

In a sane world, her firing would be called racist.

By the way, she had already apologized, but it´s time to lynch her anyway. For not being black.

They are USING this as an excuse to dump her. The brass at FN were livid that they were the last to know about her diabetes. She was unbelievably disloyal and greedy the way she handled that whole thing. When the previously-arranged drug deal she inked while keeping the diabetes secret came out, her bosses at Food Network were even embarrassed further. You will find many Savannah women equally embarrassed by her vulgar behavior. Her apology was because she HAD to and this isn´t political cuz Paula is a big Democrat.

I expect to be judged by whom I am today and not who I was 20 years ago. She is not on my top 10 favorite list but I really think this is much ado about nothing. She said she did, knows it is now wrong and apologized. Get a life people.

What really did her in was admitting she wanted an all-black wait staff acting as slaves at her brother´s wedding in order to carry out a plantation theme. Thinkabiut it. Her cooking embraces a nostalgic image of the South- the era of the huge plantation meals because even the privileged in that society did physical labor. If that´s your schtick you better not be seen embracing the most negative part of that heritage.

Then there was Sheets Byrd (D-KKK) referring to "White Ni**ers" on some news show a few years ago.

Anyone watched "Blazing Saddles" lately. Last time I saw it on TV on one of the Turner nets, there were a lot of bleeps. Screwed up the whole Mel Brooks satire.

Paula Deen dished that Michelle O. loved her fried chicken and that she chowed down between takes when she appeared on her show.

I think she may even have said something similar recently -- that MO is a big eater.

Clearly she needs to be taken out.

That said, who is stupid enough to casually use that word anymore? Sheesh. Also, PD lost a LOT of my respect when she fawned over Jimmy Carter on her show. That old varmint never met a tyrant he didn´t love nor a working man he didn´t disdain.

Deen certainly had no problem judging what was offensive when Anthony Bourdain tweeted about her lucrative deal with Novo Nordisk, which treats the disease.

"Thinking of getting into the leg-breaking business, so I can profitably sell crutches later,"

She reminded me a bit of Hillary Clinton. It´s been obvious to me her opinion of men isn´t real high-except for her sons and her second husband- yet she allegedly tolerated her brother Bubba harassing her staff and even viewing pornography in her restaurant. Can you spell hostile work environment?

Wait, somebody asked her, in court, "Have you EVER used the word "n*****"?"

She should have taken the 5th! Obviously, using that word is one of the WORST crimes in America.

But, more importantly, the lawyer used the word in the question. So now HE should be fired.

Think of John Cleese saying the word Jehovah.

The Food Network and the Travel Channel are both owned by the Scripps Network.

In May of 2012, Anthony Bourdain, a big star on the Travel Channel made a speech saying how much he wanted to kill VP Cheney, rip off his head, and defecate (actually the ´´S´´ word) down his throat. The Travel Channel not only kept his show on the air, but gave his a big sendoff when he left to do shows on the big networks.

Paula Deen admits she used the ´´N´´ word years ago, and apologizes. Her show gets cancelled right away.

I guess he just attacked a conservative. She did the ultimate sin in lie-beral land.

Growing up in a post-segregation junior high and being a skinny little white, blonde-haired boy, being hassled for ´´a quarter´´ or ´´give me all the change in yo pocket´´. I was called cracker, whitey, and a number of names I can´t post on this site. I couldn´t use the n-word back at them because it was always four or five of them surrounding me. For every Driving Miss Daisy chauffeur, there are hundreds of Django Unchained miscreants. They all go to court claiming they were just bustin´ up a Chifferobe.

(apologies for the movie analogies, but they work in this case)

Bottom line, Paula got on the wrong side of a Wookie for calling a shovel a shovel. My take is that PD was trying to be polite when she mentioned the thing ate just most of the whole set.

The true story of Ina Garten and the make-a-wish child came out and it was not at all as first reported. She has the best recipes on the network, easy to make and always delicious.

I´m not saying she was right in saying what she did, but jeesh, I´ve watched Food Network for years and years and SHE was the big draw way before Barefoot Contessa or Giada or any other Chefs who are now on that show. Well gawly! I´ve lived in the South for 44 years. Not very many of my friends and family uses the N word. I´m originally from Seattle. As for Ms. Deen. It just goes to show you words you used umpteen years ago can come back to haunt you. Even if you apologize. Sounds like what 0bama is doing. Keep a little dossier on your words so that one day he can screw with you and get you kicked off the Food Network. Sick. And I´ve only watched Paula a few times. Not interested in her type of cooking. Not only did she lose weight and acknowledge her diabetes, she got kicked off the Food Network. Dumb.

I don´t know if she´s used the word more than the one time she admitted to in her sworn deposition, but does anyone understand that she used it in speaking to her husband, describing the cretin who had put a gun to her head and robbed her?

She used the word in describing a person who robbed her at gun point. A black man.

If it had happened to me, I probably would have used the word, too, in describing my attacker.

Everyone has lost sight of the REASON she used the word.

I used to use this word 50 years ago when I was little and didn´t even know what it meant - I don´t think there are many people that have not used the word at some point in their life.

Paula needs to say she´s gay - that would get her back in the good graces of the Hollyweird, tee-vee people!

Paula Deen doesn´t need Food Network. She´s rich now, and can do plenty of other food stuff elsewhere. However, Food Network really ticked me off. They made mucho money off of Paul Deen being on their network, and even after her not owning up to having Diabetes II (who cares, that´s her business) she made lemonade out of that lemon by doing diabetes themed food shows on the network, while losing weight herself. So, the network did well by her on the diabetes bad rap also.

I think the Food Network should be inundated by calls, e-mails, letters, etc. for being PC jerks. And I say that in spite of the fact that Paula Deen has a few loose screws because she is a liberal, which is a mental disease.

I´m no Paul Deen fan and recoil at her excessive and phony "y´alls" and that contrived laugh that makes my cats run for cover. Nevertheless, s he has my respect for telling the truth as the Food Network now is keel-hauling her for a trumped up set of phony reasons. As long as it is the new Food Network style, it is incumbent on their leadership to hold each of their hosts equally accountable.

Let´s begin with Giada de Laurentis the Food Network gold standard. She´s reported to cause the toughest of the tough to blush at her non stop vulgar and filthy swearing. To that add exposing her boobs, which apparently is intended to spice up her speegheetee or whatever dish she uses her phony pronunciations to describe. And how about those Neelys? Reverse racism apparently is okay for them.

I once watched Food Network fairly often. Now that I am witness to Paula Deen being scape goated in a cheap set of moves intended to get rid of her I´m done.

I´d like to know who, if he or she is telling the truth, wouldn´t have to honestly say that the answer to having used words or language in common usage years ago isn´t "yes," just as Paula Deen did. She also said she apologizes after the fact. There´s a way to send a message: Tune out the Food Network for good; don´t buy their magazine, reject any line of product or anything else related to them.

Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent.
