GOP Rep. Franks says rate of
pregnancies from rape is ´very low´

The Hill [Washington, DC], by Elise Viebeck

Original Article

Posted By:KarenJ1, 6/12/2013 1:38:26 PM

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) said Wednesday that the incidence of pregnancy caused by rape is "very low," prompting criticism from Democrats who said the GOP is waging a "war on women." Franks made the comment during a committee mark-up of his late-term abortion ban bill, which is expected pass the House next week. The Republican lawmaker was arguing against a Democratic amendment allowing rape and incest victims to procure abortions. As written, the bill only exempts women whose lives are in danger. "You know, the incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low," Franks said.

Comments:
Republicans just never learn to watch what they say because Democrats will always use their words against them.

I read the entire story and believe the intended statement was that we don´t see many late term abortions due to rape.

My interpretation is that this statement is true because women either have an abortion very early or carry the baby to term.

The amendment died so this is simply character assassination at this point.

Like No. 11, I think Franks´ remark is being misrepresented: Late term abortions due to rape are infrequent. Why would a woman who was raped, or a victim of incest, wait till late term to have an abortion? Late abortions truly for such reasons would be few to none. Rape and incest are just buzzwords leftists like to use to justify abortion. Yet they´d be horrified at any suggestion that rapists themselves should be executed.

You couldn´t be more stupid than this at a time when Obama is really blowing it and the pubbies have a chance to win over the public. There are lots and lots of people who would rather have a Clinton or an Obama - even if they are dishonest and corrupt - than men who hate and want to demean, control and make war against women.

Franks is obviously correct, but as many posters have noted, why the need to go there. The easy comeback: if it´s so rare, why not allow the abortions. Whether rape pregnancies are common or not is beside the point as to why Franks opposes abortion, so why give an easy talking point to the libs.

Examining fertility statistics from medical websites and doing the math. If a rape is truly random then there is a 4% chance of pregnancy. 4% sounds like a number that qualifies for the description as "very low".

Being right has nothing to do with this. Obviously, the incidence of pregnancy due to rape is a statistic. The accuracy of the statistic can be argued based on reported / unreported rapes. But the guy just needs to know that if he even mentions the word "rape," he will be pilloried.

But then, that is what liberals are trying to do to all of us: intimidate us into shutting up about everything.

Alhough it was stupid to fall into this well worn trap set by the abortophiles, his statement that their amendment allowing exceptions for rape or incest should require the woman to report the crime shortly after it occured make alot of sense. If a woman really does become pregnant by rape and is OK with terminating the child, surely she would have the abortion as soon as possible. And I would think she would want the attacker caught and punished. That can´t happen if she doesn´t report the crime and without such a provision, any woman who wants a late term abortion can simply claim she was raped 8 or 9 months ago and nobody will be able to prove othewise, thus rendering any restriction on late term abortion completely meaningless. (Which is exactly why the abortophiles NEVER include or support a reporting provision.)

When a Republican makes remarks like he did, it does not matter if he was correct or not, because the liberal Democrats and their media allies will ensure that the remarks are either taken out of context or are given new meaning, so that they can be used against him and the Republican Party. Sending scores of armed agents along with helicopters and dogs to confront an elderly Nevada rancher over grazing fees may seem like overkill, but critics say it’s not inconsistent with the federal government’s recent approach to environmental enforcement. The simmering truce between the Bundys and the Bureau of Land Management comes after high-profile raids last year by armed federal agents on small-time gold miners in tiny Chicken, Alaska, and guitar makers at the Gibson Guitar facilities in Tennessee. That doesn’t include more subtle threats, such as recent efforts by the Obama administration to raise grazing fees or pressure

Rep. Joe Garcia (D-Fla.) is among the Democrats pressing Congress to take up immigration reform. But they might become citizens if Garcia and other immigration advocates get their way. Democrats are urging Republicans to sign their discharge petition, which would force a House vote on

Thank God for Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration J. Russell George. His investigation of what turned out to be the IRS abuse scandal may well have saved the Constitution and the nation. For his fair and impartial investigation into the Internal Revenue Service’s abuse of Americans who dissent from President Obama’s agenda, Democrats have called for an investigation of him. George should not be investigated, but perhaps the Democrats who want him investigated — Reps. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) and Matt Cartwright (D-PA) — should be. Hank Aaron’s recent comments about the need for America to realize that racism is still very much alive and thriving — only now due to those who wear “neckties and starched shirts” rather than KKK hoods — has sparked an angry backlash and many fans are turning the tables, calling the baseball legend himself a racist. “Hank Aaron is a s*****g piece of [expletive] [racial slur],” one man said in an email to the Atlanta Braves’ front office, one of the teams Mr. Aaron used to play for, CBS News reported. “My old man instilled in my mind from a

Western Washington University sent a questionnaire to students asking them for advice on how the administration could succeed at making sure that in future years, “we are not as white as we are today.” The question notes that WWU’s racial make up does not perfectly reflect the nation at large, and asks students to consider strategies that other universities have used to focus on skin color as the paramount indicator of a student-applicant’s worth. The president of WWU has stated that his explicit goal is to reduce the white population on campus, according to Campus Reform. “I’ve said before and I’ll say it

How do you ensure that you won’t be ostracized, denounced, or fired if you are a media celebrity, captain of industry, or high public official? For some, sexist banter is certainly no problem. Stand-up comedian Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a c–t and a tw-t, but suffered no ill consequences. David Letterman joked on air that Sarah Palin’s 14-year-old daughter had had sex with Alex Rodriguez during a New York Yankees game. There was no downside to that either. President Obama tosses around “sweetie” as he wishes. No problem with that. No one believes Barack could be condescending to women.

WASHINGTON — Former President Jimmy Carter joined fellow Nobel laureates Wednesday in opposing Keystone XL, insisting that approving the pipeline would trigger “more climate upheaval” around the globe. In an open letter to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, Carter and the nine other Nobel Peace Prize winners bluntly warned the leaders: “Your decision on the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline will define your climate legacy.” The missive, published as an advertisement in Politico, represents the first time Carter has taken a position on the $5.4 billion project and makes him the first former president to come

When President Obama needed a preacher to fulfill the closing prayer duties at the annual White House Easter Prayer Breakfast, he turned to none other than the Episcopal Church’s first openly gay bishop — who said he was as shocked as anyone at the appointment. The Right Rev. Gene Robinson said in a tweet, accompanied by a photo of Mr. Obama behind a podium at the event: “POTUS ‘preaches’ at the Easter prayer breakfast. Then, out of the blue, asks ME to close with prayer. OMG!” Newsmax said he also emphasized that the words he chose to close the breakfast

With Easter soon approaching, the Rev. Al Sharpton on Wednesday drew parallels between the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of President Obama’s political career. Joining the “Tom Joyner Morning Show,” Mr. Sharpton said that his message for this Easter is that “no matter what the world may do to you unfairly, no matter how you’re crucified — nailed to the cross at home, or in your personal relationships, or on the job — that you can rise if you don’t lose yourself during the hard times and the challenges.” The reverend went on to say that Christ endured so much humiliation and unearned suffering leading up to his death,
