GOP Rep. Franks says rate of
pregnancies from rape is ´very low´

The Hill [Washington, DC], by Elise Viebeck

Original Article

Posted By:KarenJ1, 6/12/2013 1:38:26 PM

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) said Wednesday that the incidence of pregnancy caused by rape is "very low," prompting criticism from Democrats who said the GOP is waging a "war on women." Franks made the comment during a committee mark-up of his late-term abortion ban bill, which is expected pass the House next week. The Republican lawmaker was arguing against a Democratic amendment allowing rape and incest victims to procure abortions. As written, the bill only exempts women whose lives are in danger. "You know, the incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low," Franks said.

Comments:
Republicans just never learn to watch what they say because Democrats will always use their words against them.

I read the entire story and believe the intended statement was that we don´t see many late term abortions due to rape.

My interpretation is that this statement is true because women either have an abortion very early or carry the baby to term.

The amendment died so this is simply character assassination at this point.

Like No. 11, I think Franks´ remark is being misrepresented: Late term abortions due to rape are infrequent. Why would a woman who was raped, or a victim of incest, wait till late term to have an abortion? Late abortions truly for such reasons would be few to none. Rape and incest are just buzzwords leftists like to use to justify abortion. Yet they´d be horrified at any suggestion that rapists themselves should be executed.

You couldn´t be more stupid than this at a time when Obama is really blowing it and the pubbies have a chance to win over the public. There are lots and lots of people who would rather have a Clinton or an Obama - even if they are dishonest and corrupt - than men who hate and want to demean, control and make war against women.

Franks is obviously correct, but as many posters have noted, why the need to go there. The easy comeback: if it´s so rare, why not allow the abortions. Whether rape pregnancies are common or not is beside the point as to why Franks opposes abortion, so why give an easy talking point to the libs.

Examining fertility statistics from medical websites and doing the math. If a rape is truly random then there is a 4% chance of pregnancy. 4% sounds like a number that qualifies for the description as "very low".

Being right has nothing to do with this. Obviously, the incidence of pregnancy due to rape is a statistic. The accuracy of the statistic can be argued based on reported / unreported rapes. But the guy just needs to know that if he even mentions the word "rape," he will be pilloried.

But then, that is what liberals are trying to do to all of us: intimidate us into shutting up about everything.

Alhough it was stupid to fall into this well worn trap set by the abortophiles, his statement that their amendment allowing exceptions for rape or incest should require the woman to report the crime shortly after it occured make alot of sense. If a woman really does become pregnant by rape and is OK with terminating the child, surely she would have the abortion as soon as possible. And I would think she would want the attacker caught and punished. That can´t happen if she doesn´t report the crime and without such a provision, any woman who wants a late term abortion can simply claim she was raped 8 or 9 months ago and nobody will be able to prove othewise, thus rendering any restriction on late term abortion completely meaningless. (Which is exactly why the abortophiles NEVER include or support a reporting provision.)

When a Republican makes remarks like he did, it does not matter if he was correct or not, because the liberal Democrats and their media allies will ensure that the remarks are either taken out of context or are given new meaning, so that they can be used against him and the Republican Party. President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

Even though the number of illegal immigrants who have been deported through the courts has dropped by 43% since President Barack Obama took office, the Obama administration may enact administrative changes to allow bond hearings for detained illegal immigrants. It’s pitiful that we’ve reached this point, but Obama’s account of this chat really is more credible than Cantor’s. O’s position on immigration is straightforward: He wants amnesty badly, partly for legacy reasons and partly because he’s understandably keen to legalize a few million future Democratic voters, and he’s hoping the GOP will go along so that he doesn’t have to do something risky like an executive moratorium on deportations. The GOP leadership’s position is anything but straightforward. They’re convinced that they need to pass some sort of immigration bill before 2016 or else Latinos will hand the White House

With Easter soon approaching, the Rev. Al Sharpton on Wednesday drew parallels between the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of President Obama’s political career. Joining the “Tom Joyner Morning Show,” Mr. Sharpton said that his message for this Easter is that “no matter what the world may do to you unfairly, no matter how you’re crucified — nailed to the cross at home, or in your personal relationships, or on the job — that you can rise if you don’t lose yourself during the hard times and the challenges.” The reverend went on to say that Christ endured so much humiliation and unearned suffering leading up to his death,

FORT WORTH — Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis will undergo neck surgery today, her campaign said Tuesday. “After experiencing shoulder and right arm pain in recent weeks, Sen. Davis will have a routine surgical procedure to remove bone spurs and degenerative discs that are creating compression on the nerves in her neck,” campaign spokesman Zac Petkanas said in a statement Tuesday. “This is a common issue experienced by runners and endurance athletes,” he said. Davis, of Fort Worth, will undergo the outpatient surgery at the Fort Worth Brain and Spine Institute. Dr. Thomas Ellis will perform the

As for "blight removal," perhaps they could start with city hall. Reuters: Michigan officials and President Barack Obama´s Administration are discussing a plan to free up $100 million in federal money to aid Detroit´s retired city workers, the Detroit Free Press reported on Tuesday. Citing two people familiar with the talks, the newspaper said the talks were centered around federal money flowing to Michigan for blight removal. Under the plan, $100 million

Climate change’s latest casualty appears to be fish — or more specifically, fish brains — as researchers say the carbon dioxide that’s being absorbed into the ocean is causing the scaly creatures to lose their survival instincts. In other words, the fish are losing their minds, The Daily Mail reported. The acid from atmospheric carbon dioxide seeps into sea waters, dissolves and ultimately lowers the pH balance, researchers said. The acidic waters then hamper the fishes’ sensory systems, so they’re not able to distinguish between smells any longer, the scientists went on. When the acid levels get really high, the fish lose their
