GOP Rep. Franks says rate of
pregnancies from rape is ´very low´

The Hill [Washington, DC], by Elise Viebeck

Original Article

Posted By:KarenJ1, 6/12/2013 1:38:26 PM

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) said Wednesday that the incidence of pregnancy caused by rape is "very low," prompting criticism from Democrats who said the GOP is waging a "war on women." Franks made the comment during a committee mark-up of his late-term abortion ban bill, which is expected pass the House next week. The Republican lawmaker was arguing against a Democratic amendment allowing rape and incest victims to procure abortions. As written, the bill only exempts women whose lives are in danger. "You know, the incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low," Franks said.

Comments:
Republicans just never learn to watch what they say because Democrats will always use their words against them.

I read the entire story and believe the intended statement was that we don´t see many late term abortions due to rape.

My interpretation is that this statement is true because women either have an abortion very early or carry the baby to term.

The amendment died so this is simply character assassination at this point.

Like No. 11, I think Franks´ remark is being misrepresented: Late term abortions due to rape are infrequent. Why would a woman who was raped, or a victim of incest, wait till late term to have an abortion? Late abortions truly for such reasons would be few to none. Rape and incest are just buzzwords leftists like to use to justify abortion. Yet they´d be horrified at any suggestion that rapists themselves should be executed.

You couldn´t be more stupid than this at a time when Obama is really blowing it and the pubbies have a chance to win over the public. There are lots and lots of people who would rather have a Clinton or an Obama - even if they are dishonest and corrupt - than men who hate and want to demean, control and make war against women.

Franks is obviously correct, but as many posters have noted, why the need to go there. The easy comeback: if it´s so rare, why not allow the abortions. Whether rape pregnancies are common or not is beside the point as to why Franks opposes abortion, so why give an easy talking point to the libs.

Examining fertility statistics from medical websites and doing the math. If a rape is truly random then there is a 4% chance of pregnancy. 4% sounds like a number that qualifies for the description as "very low".

Being right has nothing to do with this. Obviously, the incidence of pregnancy due to rape is a statistic. The accuracy of the statistic can be argued based on reported / unreported rapes. But the guy just needs to know that if he even mentions the word "rape," he will be pilloried.

But then, that is what liberals are trying to do to all of us: intimidate us into shutting up about everything.

Alhough it was stupid to fall into this well worn trap set by the abortophiles, his statement that their amendment allowing exceptions for rape or incest should require the woman to report the crime shortly after it occured make alot of sense. If a woman really does become pregnant by rape and is OK with terminating the child, surely she would have the abortion as soon as possible. And I would think she would want the attacker caught and punished. That can´t happen if she doesn´t report the crime and without such a provision, any woman who wants a late term abortion can simply claim she was raped 8 or 9 months ago and nobody will be able to prove othewise, thus rendering any restriction on late term abortion completely meaningless. (Which is exactly why the abortophiles NEVER include or support a reporting provision.)

WASHINGTON—Speaker John Boehner and other senior House Republicans are telling donors and industry groups that they aim to pass immigration legislation this year, despite the reluctance of many Republicans to tackle the divisive issue before the November elections. Many lawmakers and activists have assumed the issue was off the table in an election year. But Mr. Boehner said at a Las Vegas fundraiser last month he was "hellbent on getting this done this year," according to two people in the room. One of the few laws of political science is that when governments make mistakes, they tend to be whoppers. Luckily for them, the public’s memory is short, and the outrage of today soon declines into the apathy of tomorrow. From several articles published in a recent edition of the British Medical Journal, it appears that many governments around the world, including those of Britain and the US, may have made such a mistake in stockpiling billions of dollars’ worth of anti-flu medications, bought principally from Roche, the largest pharmaceutical company in the world as measured by capitalization. First the governments overestimated the

Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren wrote in her forthcoming book that she was “hurt” and “angry” by 2012 reporting on her fraudulent claim to Native American heritage. “What really threw me, though, were the constant attacks from the other side,” Warren wrote in her book “A Fighting Chance.” “I would almost persuade myself that I was starting to get the hang of full-throttle campaigning and then — bam! Out of left field, the state Republican Party, or the Brown campaign, or some blogger, would launch a rocket at me,” Warren wrote, adding, ”I was stunned by the attacks.” This reporter (blogger?) reported extensively

WASHINGTON — Former President Jimmy Carter joined fellow Nobel laureates Wednesday in opposing Keystone XL, insisting that approving the pipeline would trigger “more climate upheaval” around the globe. In an open letter to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, Carter and the nine other Nobel Peace Prize winners bluntly warned the leaders: “Your decision on the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline will define your climate legacy.” The missive, published as an advertisement in Politico, represents the first time Carter has taken a position on the $5.4 billion project and makes him the first former president to come

To "honor the dignity and work of immigrants," Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi helps Bishop Marc Andrus wash the feet of two children Thursday at Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Pelosi also used the occasion to talk about passing HR15 - bipartisan immigration legislation that her office says would "reduce the deficit by nearly $1 trillion, secure our borders, unite our families, protect our workers and provide an earned pathway to citizenship." The Democratic leader´s ceremony coincides with Pope Francis´ similar ceremony in Rome to mark Holy Week.

First, the good news: We are close enough to the end of the Obama presidency for his crowd to talk about a presidential library. Now, the bad news: Obama´s retirement is still 1,008 days distant. Plenty of time though to round up the dough to build it somewhere. Figure they need Solyndra-style money, at least $500 million. The last two presidents – Bill Clinton and George W. Bush -- built their legacy edifices totally with private money. [Snip] However, Obama supporters have a different take. They think taxpayers should put up $100 million in public money for Obama´s library.

Less than 16 hours after Chelsea Clinton announced she was pregnant, a lot of major news outlets started staring into the crystal ball of Chelsea’s womb, wondering what this currently floating zygotic multicellular being meant for the prospects of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, which is also a floating, zygotic, multicellular being. Their answer: The immaculately conceived Clinton child could mean everything. And no, it’s not just the fact that having a grandchild could be personally fulfilling to Hillary and Bill (mazel tov, by the way), or that a cute baby would be a sweet cherry on top of Hillary’s already
