Meet the Most Important
Ted Cruz Birther: Ted Cruz

New Republic, by Noam Scheiber

Original Article

Posted By:Pluperfect, 5/8/2013 5:29:43 AM

If it wasn’t obvious beforehand, it became clear last week that Ted Cruz is likely to run for president. On Wednesday, the freshman senator’s advisors spilled the beans about his thinking on 2016 to National Review (short version: highly doable), and Friday Cruz showed up in the critical primary state of South Carolina to speak at the state GOP’s “Silver Elephant Dinner.” Which raises a question conspiratorial liberals have been waiting to ask of a Republican since at least 2008: Is Ted Cruz, who was born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father,

Situs of birth is immaterial!

Cuban father is 100% disqualifying!

Period!

[Also ineligible -- Jindal; Rubio; and Obama. All/b> official acts of the last are void.]

We all need to contact our Representatives and Senators and have them address the "Natural versus Native Born" American. We need a final word and a LAW to govern these important definitions. Also, anchor baby legislation needs to be written. If one of your parents isn´t an American citizen, neither are you....

I´m a big fan of Senator Cruz. He knows the law, has read, and likes, our Constitution. If he decides to run for office, I´m pretty sure he would know what he needs to qualify. But I also think he takes his role as a senator VERY seriously (unusual in these days)and, because he does his job, scares the heck out of the politicians, dem and republican.

Don´t take the bait. This "issue" is recent. If one parent is a US citizen, the child is a US citizen from birth. There was no quibbling until this century.

Under further questioning, Spiro conceded that Cruz’s case isn’t really clear cut if you limit yourself to the actual wording of the Constitution.

Well, if we´re going to be as unreasonable as all that...

I found the article a little difficult to follow. I can´t tell if Cruz himself is saying he is not eligible or if the author is saying that Cruz´s past statements and positions regarding the Constitution mean that he should regard himself as ineligible. (Maybe I need some caffeine.)

If Ted Cruz is allowing this ´presidential run´ idea to play out for awhile so that he can step up and say, ´No, I am not Constitutionally eligible to serve as President, but I will serve My Country in other capacities,´ he will not only place this issue squarely before the electorate (and in Obama´s face), he will elevate himself greatly in my estimation, and he occupies a high position there already.

No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President

Notice the constitution defines a DIFFERENCE between a citizen and a natural born citizen? Most everyone ignores the difference, but it is there. In the late 1700´s, a natural born citizen was one that was born to two US citizens. Seems plain enough. Neither obama or Cruz is eligible to be President or Vice President. Senator Cruz is fully qualified to be on our US Supreme Court, and I hope President Palin puts him there in 2019 (or sooner).

The term "natural born citizen" is becoming a new focus of the "auras and penumbras" wing of the progressive agenda.

The founders may have written the most majestic written document in our history, but they wrote it to be understandable to any intelligent person, regardless of educational level.

A "natural born citizen" is obviously one who is, at and as a circumstance of, birth, a citizen of the United States.

At the very instant of his birth, Ted Cruz was a US citizen. The history of the evolution of the "born on US soil" versus "a citizen at birth" as the "natural born" meme is all about trying to facilitate and legitimatize what we now call "anchor babies"

The founders clearly intended that the president must not be, or have been, a foreign national.

Number nine, take a closer look at the sentence you copied from the Constitution: Natural born or citizen. The operative word is OR: natural born or citizen,(not AND) and one does not define the other.
Look at it this way--if what you think is true, that is, your parents have to be born in the US to qualify, the first seven presidents would not have qualified to be president. Why would they have written themselves out of the job?

Well, I would ask if Cruz was considered a citizen of Canada when he was born. Did his mother raise him in Canada as a Canadian? Did she consider him/them to be Canadian? If he wasn´t Canadian citizen, then he by default MUST have been an American.

Two of my favorite posters see this issue differently from me, so I proceed with caution here. I believe #11 is correct. The source most commonly cited to support the both parents rule is Vattel, who does not distinguish between Native Born and Natural Born citizens. He does say if your parents are citizens, you are a Natural Born citizen. He does not say that is the only way to be a Natural Born citizen. (Saying oranges are fruit does not mean only oranges are fruit.) Vattel repeats over and over that children inherit the condition of their fathers. If we take Vattel as read on that point, Cruz wouldn´t be a American citizen at all. However, Vattel also repeatedly emphasizes that national laws on citizenship vary and must be respected. My view is that Cruz was born a U.S. citizen (i.e. was not "naturalized" into citizenship) and is therefore constitutionally eligible.

But... I also agree with #11´s final sentence, and creates a problem for me. Ted Cruz is/was a foreign national. He was a Canadian citizen at birth. Dual citizenship did not exist in the days of Vattel and Madison, so the Constitution does not proscribe it as a condition of eligibility for the President. However, I find it difficult to believe the Founding Fathers would have allowed a Canadian citizen to become President of the United States. I agree with their clear intent and would therefore have problems voting for Cruz.

He will not be eligible because of the Constitution first (IMHO) and the un-relenting drumbeats from the RATS and their LSM down lowers. Watch and see....

A US citizen at birth = "natural born." If you think otherwise, don´t vote for him, because that is the only chance you would have of blocking him from being President as not being "natural born."

#12 a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, covers the first 7 or 8 Presidents, and proves my point. You can be a citizen of the USA and NOT be a natural born citizen. Those are two different designations. A naturalized citizen cannot be a President, but their offspring can be if they were born after the parents acquired their citizenship, making the children natural born.

Former presidential adviser Karl Rove may be a lightning rod for some conservative complaints these days, but his March 27 column in the Wall Street Journal sounded the right notes for everybody on the right side of the political spectrum. Entitled “The New Republican Reformers,” Rove’s column highlighted the central truth that Republicans and conservatives usually do well when they are seen not just as obstructionists, but as practical problem-solvers. I saw this firsthand last year when I ran in a special election for Congress — in which whatever else went wrong (I finished fourth in an unexpectedly foreshortened nine-way primary, eventually

The Russian reset was to have been the crown jewel of Mr. Obama´s statecraft, the start of a new era in which Washington and Moscow worked together to solve the world´s problems.
