BOSTON — The families of those who lost loved ones and individuals who suffered double amputations or permanent brain damage in the Boston Marathon bombing would receive the highest payments from a fund created to help people injured in the twin blasts, according to a draft proposal of payouts from the One Fund Boston, which has already taken in more than $28 million in donations. The fund administrator, Kenneth Feinberg, unveiled the draft proposal at a public meeting Monday at the Boston Public Library, across the street from the bombing site.

It´s Obama, McCain, Graham who
made ´huge mistake´ in Egypt
Fox News, by Raymond Stock    Original Article

On their current trip to Cairo, Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), two of President Barack Obama’s most persistent critics on everything in foreign policy from Syria to Benghazi, have found common cause with him at last. All three fear that the anti-American (and generally anti-human) Muslim Brotherhood (MB), whom they mistakenly see as “moderate,” will disappear from the halls of power in Egypt, our most important Arab ally. They also evidently worry that the MB’s leading figures, such as now-deposed (and arrested) President Mohamed Morsi—who had awarded himself powers greater than any previous ruler

China´s plan for $80B

China´s latest plan to link the mainland to Taiwan, either by bridge or via a tunnel that would be triple the size of the one under the English Channel, is sure to heighten long-simmering tensions between the two countries. China, which has always claimed dominion over Taiwan, recently approved a State Council plan for a highway that would connect Beijing to Taipei, which would stretch 1,200 miles, including a 111-mile span over or under the straits that separate the nations. Such a project has been discussed for at least a decade, but was recently approved

The Disgrace of the Yankees

New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez may be the most hated figure in sports, but he is a man for our time. He is a master at the insincere mea culpa, at self-involvement, at pretense and greed. Not just greed for money, but for fame and glory. If he had only disgraced himself playing for the Texas Rangers, that would be one thing, but he has done it playing for the most storied franchise in sports, whose legends are synonymous with baseball greatness. So let’s consider the tale of two prodigiously talented Yankee corner infielders, separated by about 80 years

For a glimpse at the secret, special-favors factory that Washington has become under President Obama, check out this week´s big news out of the Environmental Protection Agency. Or rather, look beyond the headlines to the corporate handout hidden within. The big news was that the EPA issued—finally—its infamous annual quota for renewable fuels. That mandate tells the nation´s refineries how much renewable fuel (ethanol) must be blended annually into gasoline, a quota that is becoming a pernicious driver of gas prices. The EPA was supposed to release the 2013 quota last November but decided to leave the industry

As we advance toward the much anticipated rollout of Obamacare on October 1, the true horror of what Congress and the president have wrought is beginning to sink in. There is a growing nervousness that the state insurance exchanges not only won’t be ready, but may harbor a dangerous vulnerability that would allow hackers access to the personal information of consumers who sign up for insurance via the sites. There is also a growing number of Democrats who are advocating a repeal of one of Obamacare’s major pieces: the Independent Payment Advisory Board, which will arbitrarily rule

WASHINGTON — The gloating among jihadists and their sympathizers began last week, right after the United States shut down almost two dozen diplomatic posts across the Middle East in response to a terrorist threat. “God is great! America is in a condition of terror and fear from Al Qaeda,” wrote one jihadist in an online forum. Another one rejoiced: “The mobilization and security precautions are costing them billions of dollars. We hope to hear more of such psychological warfare, even if there are no actual jihadi operations on the ground.” The jihadists are not the only ones

On Tuesday, Barack Obama insisted that the US government isn’t spying on Americans by surveilling the contents of their communications. Less than two days later, the New York Times makes hash of that claim. The NSA, reports Charlie Savage, sifts through the content of “vast amounts” of electronic communications between Americans and people abroad in their search for links to terrorism, and not just the metadata: The National Security Agency is searching the contents of vast amounts of Americans’ e-mail and text communications into and out of the country, hunting for people who mention information about foreigners

In an interview with Time magazine, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, explained that he respected President Obama and even modeled his own campaign for senate after his presidential campaign. “I think Barack Obama is an extraordinary politician,” Cruz said. “And I respect Barack Obama a great deal. I think he is committed to his principles, which is rare in politics.” Cruz also pointed out that Obama’s principles were “profoundly dangerous.” “I respect that he believes, I think genuinely, with all of his heart, that government control of economy and redistribution of wealth betters the world,” Cruz added.

Former presidential candidate Ron Paul’s campaign negotiated to purchase the endorsement of an Iowa state senator who had previously endorsed Rep. Michelle Bachmann, R-Minn., according to emails obtained by Opensecrets.org. “In an Oct. 29, 2011 email, a representative of Iowa state Sen. Kent Sorenson, a Republican, asks the Paul campaign to provide Sorenson with $8,000 per month in salary for him, $5,000 per month in salary for a Sorenson ally, as well as $100,000 in contributions for a newly created PAC that Sorenson planned to use to support conservative candidates for Iowa state office,” Opensecrets.org explained.

Imagine you have hundreds of millions of dollars in disposable income. (Congratulations!) You’re looking to find a safe place to keep it, and maybe earn a decent yield. Along comes a prospectus for a new product, to invest in the MBS Ice Cream Corporation. It comes from the same people who pitched you on MBS Ice Cream a few years ago, only they lied to you about the quality of their rancid ice cream, did nothing as the company imploded, and paid you back just pennies on the dollar when you sued them.

Gov. Chris Christie’s habit of using his public office to promote his presidential ambitions has reached a new low. We’ve seen him do it before. He closed down six Planned Parenthood clinics to appease right-wing primary voters. He’s dragged his feet relentlessly over medical marijuana and dismissed concerns over climate change for the same reason. This fall he is wasting taxpayer money by holding an election in October, in addition to the regularly scheduled November election, solely to protect the large victory margin he expects for his party. But this time, he’s outdone himself.

Nanny State: If any question remained about the Obama White House´s appetite for running everyone´s life from Washington, it should be settled now. The Obama Department of Housing and Urban Development might decide it wants to dictate changes. HUD is, according to Fox News, considering "a new rule that would allow the feds to track diversity in America´s neighborhoods and then push policies to change those it deems discriminatory." “IQ is a metric of such dubiousness that almost no serious educational researcher uses it anymore,” the Guardian’s Ana Marie Cox wrote back in May. It was a breathtakingly ignorant statement. Psychologist Jelte Wicherts noted in response that a search for “IQ test” in Google’s academic database yielded more than 10,000 hits — just for the year 2013. (Snip) There is a large discrepancy between what educated laypeople believe about cognitive science and what experts actually know. Journalists are steeped in the lay wisdom, so they are repeatedly surprised when someone forthrightly discusses the real science of mental ability.

Tonight, I went on Lawrence O´Donnell´s show, and Lawrence O´Donnell yelled at me. Or, rather, he O´Reilly´d at me. That O´Donnell interrupted and harangued and mansplained and was generally an angry grandpa at me is not what I take issue with, however. What bothers me is that, look: your producers take the time to find experts to come on the show, answer your questions, and, hopefully, clarify the issue at hand.

The Clintons have decided to rent a different house in the Hamptons this summer after they only received a small portion of their security deposit back from the home they rented last year. The famous Democrats have been frequent visitors to the expensive summer getaway in Long Island, and rented the same beachfront house in 2011 and 2012. Justice: The wife of a Fort Hood survivor claims the Defense Department is "slapping victims with gag orders" and telling family members not to talk to the press following testimony in the trial of Nidal Hasan. One of the great scandals of the Obama administration has been its shameful designation of the Nov. 5, 2009, rampage at the Army base in Killeen, Texas, by Maj. Nidal Hasan as "workplace violence." It has only compounded the pain and suffering of the victims and their families who have now apparently been ordered to shut up about it.

President Barack Obama announced Friday afternoon that the White House will publicly release a summary of the legal authorities through which the National Security Agency conducts its controversial surveillance programs. ´Given the history of abuse by governments,´ he said, it is important to explain how such a program is managed, and - equally important - what it may not do. He described his working relationship with Vladimir Putin as ´candid´ and ´blunt,´ and seemed to dismiss concerns that the Russian president´s body language indicated a lack of willingness to work with the United States.
