Reid to shelve gun bill
CNN, by Dana Bash

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will set aside proposed gun legislation on Thursday without a final vote following the defeat a day earlier of major provisions sought by President Barack Obama and Democrats in the aftermath of the Newtown school massacre, CNN has learned. A Senate Democratic leadership aide said Reid can bring up the package of gun proposals again if circumstances change and he believes he has the votes for key provisions to pass, particularly a measure to expand background checks on gun buyers. In a major defeat for supporters of tougher gun laws

Harry Reid won´t bring this to the Senate floor before 2014. His Democrat majority will not carry the day since they fear a vote for gun control would jeopardize their re-election. It is all about political advantage. Any legislation actually good for the country is only a matter of serendipity.

Texas Republican lawmaker Tim Huelskamp took MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow to task during a post-State of the Union interview on Benghazi secrecy, noting that if Maddow “would stop being a cheerleader and be a journalist, you’d recognize we’re not getting those answers.” Huelskamp spoke with Maddow about an hour after President Barack Obama wrapped up his State of the Union address Tuesday night, with the MSNBC reporter taking the congressman to task for anti-Obama tweets she deemed offensive and inaccurate. She zeroed in on one tweet, suggesting that President Obama was deliberately ignoring the ongoing Benghazi

Long before John Kerry was jetting around the world trying to bring peace to the Middle East, before he ran for president, even before he was in the U.S. Senate, he held a much different job: owner/head cookie chef at a gourmet shop. Yes, you read that right. Telling the story Wednesday at a State Department awards ceremony, Kerry said that when he was a lawyer in Boston, “I walked out of a restaurant one night with a friend of mine, probably having had too much of a good bottle of wine, and looked out and saw an empty space in Faneuil Hall marketplace. And desperately craving a good chocolate chip cookie at that hour of night,

INDIANAPOLIS — A contentious bill to screen welfare recipients for drug abuse and limit residents to buy only “nutritional” foods with food stamps is moving forward. State representatives voted 71-22 in favor of the bill Tuesday. The bill would require residents who receive money from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families to take a questionnaire screening for substance abuse and possibly face drug testing. The bill also would restrict what can be bought through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Recipients only would be able to purchase foods deemed “nutritional” by the state, which state Rep. Jud McMillin of Brookville

WASHINGTON — The top U.S. intelligence official says a Syrian militant group tied to al-Qaida, the al-Nusra Front, aspires to attack the United States. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told the Senate Intelligence Committee Wednesday that such al-Qaida groups have started training camps "to train people to go back to their countries," and conduct more terrorist acts. Clapper says some 26,000 rebel fighters battling the government of Bashar Assad in Syria are extremists with about 7,000 of them foreigners from some 50 countries, including Europe. NEW YORK - Donald Trump, the nation´s most shameless political flirt, is at it again. This time, the billionaire real estate mogul, reality TV star and perennial self-promoter is toying with the idea of challenging New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, saying the state´s high taxes and tight gun-control laws make the Democratic incumbent vulnerable. Trump has met with Republican leaders and has pledged to spend tens of millions of dollars on a potential campaign, the same kind of motions he´s made once before for governor and several times for president over the years without ever actually jumping in. Moody´s rating agency has lowered the outlook for health insurers from stable to negative, blaming ObamaCare. Few Americans will shed tears for insurance companies. But the Moody´s announcement is a warning sign to taxpayers. They´ll be getting clobbered. Section 1342 of the Affordable Care Act forces taxpayers to make insurers whole for most of the losses incurred selling ObamaCare exchange plans through 2016. The bailout is designed to conceal the failure of the president´s signature health law until he is out of office. No one in the Obama administration talked up the advantages of bailing out insurers. Harris-Perry, on the other hand, has a very finely-tuned racial trigger. “I know that this moment is racist because it trips my racial trigger, because it makes me feel nauseous,” she said, according to The Michigan Daily. “I’m not generally angry, but you just made me mad.” While lamenting that her ‘white allies’ would never be fully able to understand

Labor leaders who have spent months lobbying unsuccessfully for special protections under the Affordable Care Act warned this week that the White House’s continued refusal to help is dampening union support for Democratic candidates in this year’s midterm elections. Leaders of two major unions, including the first to endorse Obama in 2008, said they have been betrayed by an administration that wooed their support for the 2009 legislation with promises to later address the peculiar needs of union-negotiated insurance plans that cover millions of workers.
