The impending introduction of legislation to overhaul the country’s badly strained immigration system received an extraordinary endorsement on Sunday from Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, who, after holding back for weeks, appeared on no fewer than seven television talk shows to explain and defend a plan that he said would be “a net positive for the country, now and in the future.” It was a striking show of confidence from Mr. Rubio, one of eight members of a bipartisan Senate group that has been crafting a plan to provide a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants;
Comments: This should be a cautionary tale for many of my fellow posters here at LCom. Just like Christie before him, he also blazes on the scene and then gets seduced by the dRATS controlled media to believe he´s presidential "material." Do you see a pattern here, yet? Rubio becomes one of the "gang-of eight" to do all this secret immigration negotiating when it is the responsibility of the 100 first in open session. Is this the 1,500 page bill that Senators are being "forced" to vote on with less than 24 hours after it is "submitted?"
Rubio reveals that he is no Conservative, not even a middle-of-the-roader. Is he in the pay of foreign interests? Whatever, he is quite willing to do what he is smart enough to know will cause lasting harm to this country, perhaps destroy it in the long term.
I want to see the border provisions, but from what else I´ve seen it looks like a good plan. The visa entry-exit system get´s fixed, e-verify is mandatory, no obamacare, no green card for 10 years. A fine and a background check for temporary status. It looks like a big improvement from ´06´s Kennedy-McCain disaster and the ´07 Kyl-Kennedy bill.
They can say, no government goodies, BUT, that´s not to say once the illegals are given the green light, the next step will be, "well we need to let them have (fill in the blank), because (fill in the blank). The bottom line is, they are being given amnesty if this goes thru, & it is a kick in the teeth for every person that ever jump thru all the bureaucratic hoops that Washington can think up to let them come here legally. It is also an insult to us all, for politicians to get on TV & tell lies & expect us to believe it. The "mushroom" principle is alive & well in Washington DC.........!!! God help us all.
Some pretty silly posts here. Rubio isn´t a traitor and he is a conservative. Because you disagree on an issue doesn´t make him a traitor.
Some of us will have to get real. We aren´t deporting 12M illegals and in 20 years this problem will go away--because the kids of these illegals will be citizens by birth, so we are going to have to do something between now and then. If we get border enforcement first, as Rubio says, what´s wrong with this plan?
But none of us have seen any details, so the outrage is a bit premature.
I never had a lot of hope for Rubio...he´s McCain Jr..... Rubio can just forget about running for prez...people are sick of rinos..and they never win...McCain Dole Romney...but I guess he can be happy the NY Times loves him..
Common sense will tell you that when they flood the legal US job market with tens of millions of cheap foreign workers by way of an amnesty for 11 to 20 million illegal aliens, plus allowing millions more foreigners into the country to work by way of so-called "guest worker" programs that it will be American workers who will be holding the crappy end of the stick as wages and benefits go down in US industries who could then hire those foreign workers who everybody knows are willing to work for much less then American workers can accept, and still maintain their customary US standard of living. Many American workers do not realize that those foreign workers will be legally able to compete with them for just about all of the scarce jobs out there today across the entire US economy. Imagine being an American black youth just out of high school looking for work once the job market is flooded with many millions of foreign workers?
In the years ahead if this goes through the Republicans are going to be headed into political oblivion when the Democrats pick up ten million of more new foreign born voters as a result of all this.
Why does the govt have to be so involved? Back in the 70s after the fall of Vietnam, thousands of refugees needed a place to go. Here in Minnesota, churches sponsored boatloads of Hmong refugees, helped them get started, and looked after them for a few years, guiding them to acclimate to their new home. I realize that illegal immigrants are not refugees, but perhaps the govt should seal the border, and the churches step in. A deadline can be established that all undocumented people who are not sponsored by a church by such-and-such a date, will have to start the process of returning to their native country. Those sponsored by a church, are to fulfill various requirements (fine, learn English, etc). This could be a win-win situation. The churches can show and share their faith (and values) and the illegals have a choice of two pathways to choose. I would hope that Rubio would explore all areas of solution and not depend on the govt to be the answer.
Dems will promise they will control the border, but after the bill is passed they will never control the border and the rinos can cry... and the dems can come back in five years & do it again .The dems do the repubs the same way with promises to balance the budget, they agree to budget cuts along with tax increases...the tax increases take effect immediately the budget cuts never happen.
Both party`s are trolling for votes regarding illegal border crossing. There is simply no national need to legalize anyone from anywhere right now. We have 90 million unemployed citizens and legalizing millions more will only exacerbate the problem.
I won´t vote for Rubio for anything now. And let´s stop with this phony argument about deporting 12 million illegals. You cut off taxpayer benefits, cut off jobs, they will self deport. They were doing that before the traitor Rubio got together with the amnesty gang. Any bill that is 1500 pages long is a bad bill because you know no on will be reading it until it has passed and then everyone will find out just how bad it is.
I was for Rubio when he was way behind Crist in the polls. I voted for him.
If Schummer ses No Obstacles in the way means the security issue is not handled. Rubio specically said on RUSH that he would not support a bill unless the borders were secured first. He has f´d the conservatives.
On another note I don´t care about McCain´s war hero status. Others were prisoners also.
He is not a hero for flying poorly as was his track record and getting shot down.
He has a vile temper and a small man. If he is a hero for surviving a prison camp, he is a traitor for undercutting Bush in the middle of a WAR(Iraq).
Rubio made the TV slam this morning. I don´t buy it. Anything with Schumer is going to be dishonest. The fact that no one has seen the 1,500 page law which will have a one day hearing before voting, convinces me that it is another fraud with Marco the front man.
Shame. (His mail box was full so I guess he is getting an ear full.)
Rubio went on Rush and promised no amnesty without first securing the borders. Rubio lied through his teeth, on the air, on Rush´s airtime. Will Rush now call him out for the conniving little double crosser he is?
My question for Rush: did he at least kiss you first?
I actually listened to Rubio on the Sunday shows today. You shouldn´t believe the NYT. Rubio was not for amnesty but for ten years before they could even get a green card and also Rubio is still requiring border security first. I am amazed that Lucianne posters are so ill- informed.
I listened carefully to every single word from Senator Rubio. I am not ill-informed or hard of hearing. I simply am on to the very clever spin job. Let´s take border security. Border security definition please? It´s beyond foolish to accept that without knowing WHAT it means. Then he mentions they get no federal benefits. How about state benefits? We know they will be getting all sorts of freebies. I am not ill-informed. I just do not like being lied to and tricked by these politicians.
The fact that Rubio was on all of the Sunday programs should be enough for anyone who knows why these shows exist to understand what he´s all about. Because he is playing kissy-face with scum like Schumer and Durbin, he will now be accorded the same false wisdom that is usually given to the likes of McCain and Grahamnesty.
Hold your powder! Rubio is brilliant. He is using the megaphone to telegraph the best resolution to the illegal immigrant problem. You know anything that comes from this Progressive run congress will not look anything like this plan... So he will reject it at vote time.
I still trust Rubio. He´s a strong Christian Freedom loving Tea Partier, trying to manipulate the machine.
If the Republicans do not have the basic enforcement elements of immigration reform in place and up and running before the millions of illegal aliens here now are granted any sort of legal status the enforcement elements will never happen.
Back after the big 1986 amnesty, as soon as the illegal aliens were granted a legal status, the Democrats and their political allies the liberal ethnic and immigrant rights groups, started fighting and sabotaging the enforcement elements that they agreed to in the basic reform legislation, tooth and nail, administratively through the bureaucracy, legislatively in Congress, and legally through the courts, until those enforcement elements were either watered down to ineffectiveness, or were essentially abandoned. No doubt the Democrats will do the same thing again as a good portion of their so-called Hispanic vote does not want any effective immigration laws enforced against their countrymen, friends, and relatives who will continue to sneak into the USA in the future.
The most important enforcement element is a mandatory enhanced e-verify employee electronic verification system underpinned by a modern high-tech social security card bearing a photo of the bearer, other biometric identifiers, with electronic verification capability. Without that up and running, new illegal aliens will continue to sneak into the country or overstay visas and border crossing card time limits, and will fraudulently use valid identification documents and social security cards that were issued to other people to get a job here. As long as that can happen there is no way to stop future mass uncontrolled illegal immigration.
The border crossers have no desire to work! They have been thoroughly instructed which forms need to be completed and what the steps are for getting on the dole! With brochures in Mexico now instructing Mexicans the proper method to get food stamps they are stampeding across the Rio Grande. Thanks, WH and DC Dems.
#36, actually a LOT of them work...some work several jobs and that is why my white male friend can´t get work around here. Sure, they also work the system, but don´t think they don´t want to work. Besides those that deal drugs, haven´t you noticed that most hispanics seem to drive really nice trucks and have all kinds of other goodies?? My friend would do anything for one of their jobs but a lot of these employers are hispanic too and only hire paises. I told my friend to wear brown contact lenses....
President Barack Obama is returning to The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. Obama will appear on the Aug. 6 broadcast of NBC´s late-night talker, which would mark his sixth time and the fourth appearance since becoming president. According to NBC, Obama plans to discuss jobs initiatives and the economy during his visit. Previous Tonight Show appearances were Dec. 1, 2006; Oct. 17, 2007; March 19, 2009 — marking the first time a current president appeared on a late-night talker; Oct. 25, 2011; and Oct. 24, 2012. Obama has made the late-night rounds over the years,
An American international politics publication has reported that the US Air Force plans to dispatch fighter jets and tanker aircraft to northern Australia in the next year. Foreign Policy magazine said it was part of a US strategy to dramatically expand its air defence presence across the Pacific and South-East Asia. (Snip) In a breakfast media briefing, he is reported saying the US would send "fighters, tankers and, at some point in the future, maybe bombers on a rotational basis" to Darwin. General Carlisle is reported to have said the aircraft would initially go to the RAAF base in Darwin
Most fishermen are guilty of the odd photobrag, but none can match this bloke´s cockiness. The Victorian fisherman celebrated catching a huge shark by climbing inside the gutted fish, poking his arm through its gills and posing for a joke shot with his knife buried between its eyes. In a world where every angler is pictured next to his prize catch with a thumbs up, it´s becoming increasingly difficult for intrepid fishermen to stand out. But this guy - let´s call him the Shark Slayer - certainly managed it. ´Arch´, who works at the Metung Hotel in Gippsland, was present when the photo was taken.
Washington - U.S. spy agencies plan to release newly declassified documents as early as this week about the National Security Agency surveillance programs revealed by former contractor Edward Snowden, and also material related to a secret intelligence court, a U.S. intelligence official said on Tuesday. (Snip) The documents would also include information about the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the official said. That court operates in secrecy in making decisions on government surveillance requests. The Washington Post reported late Tuesday that senior U.S. officials said one of the orders
Washington - President Barack Obama has asked two senior Republican senators to travel to Egypt to meet with its military leaders and the opposition, as Cairo´s allies struggle with how to address the turmoil convulsing the country. (Snip) U.S. officials have been grappling with how to respond to the situation in Egypt since its elected Islamist president, Mohamed Mursi, was ousted by the military on July 3. In particular, they have struggled with how to handle the $1.55 billion in mostly military aid Washington sends to Cairo each year. Egypt has long been an important U.S. ally
In a significant victory for law enforcement, a federal appeals court on Tuesday said that government authorities could extract historical location data directly from telecommunications carriers without a search warrant. The closely watched case, in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, is the first ruling that squarely addresses the constitutionality of warrantless searches of historical location data stored by cellphone service providers. Ruling 2 to 1, the court said a warrantless search was “not per se unconstitutional” because location data was “clearly a business record”
Washington - Secretary of State John Kerry said Tuesday that Israeli and Palestinian negotiators would convene again in the Middle East within two weeks and that their goal would be to work out a comprehensive peace agreement within nine months that would lead to an independent Palestinian state. (Snip) “Our objective will be to achieve a final status agreement over the course of the next nine months,” Mr. Kerry said. “We all understand the goal that we’re working towards: two states living side by side in peace and security.” As they resume peace talks that have been moribund since 2010,
Three former high-ranking Penn State officials, including the university’s former president, Graham B. Spanier, were ordered Tuesday to stand trial on charges that they were part of a cover-up related to the child sexual abuse scandal involving the former football coach Jerry Sandusky. After a two-day preliminary hearing this week, Harrisburg District Judge William Werner decided there was enough evidence against Spanier, the retired university vice president Gary Schultz and the former athletic director Tim Curley to proceed with a trial, which could start later this year.
Anti-Christian extremist groups like the ACLU, the Freedom From Religion Foundation and People for the American Way hate God. They also hate America. True America. These "progressive" outfits - along with like-minded politicos, judges, Hollywood elitists and left-wing media-types - hate that this great nation was expressly founded upon the bedrock precepts of the Judeo-Christian tradition. And so, in response, they lash out. They endeavor first to raze our God-blessed America, and then raise, from the rubble, a godless America fashioned in their own secular-socialist self-image.
Last week, Utah Sen. Mike Lee (R.) sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.), “informing Senator Reid that we will not vote for a continuing resolution that funds Obamacare,” risking a government shutdown if Lee’s objectives are not achieved. While eleven other Senate Republicans have signed on to Lee’s letter, other Republicans are denouncing the move in surprisingly direct language. “It’s not an achievable strategy…and it’s dishonest,” said Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.). “It’s the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard of,” added Sen. Richard Burr (R., N.C.).
Republican U.S. senators pushed for more transparency on aid to Egypt, if not an outright end to the $1.3 billion per year in military assistance, as U.S. officials struggled on Monday with how to respond to the crisis in Cairo. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has introduced an amendment to a Senate transportation funding bill that would end military aid to Egypt under a U.S. law banning aid to countries that have experienced military coups, and redirect the money to domestic infrastructure projects. Senate aides said on Monday that the bill and Paul's
Sacramento - Gloria Steinem, Jesse Jackson, Bonnie Raitt and Jay Leno have joined prison hunger strikers in calling for an end to California´s use of solitary confinement to control prison gang violence. The civil rights crusaders, singer and late-night comedian are among those who signed a letter sent Monday to Gov. Jerry Brown. The letter calls isolation units "extensions of the same inhumanity practiced at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay." The letter to Brown, to be followed by a demonstration Tuesday at the Capitol, was arranged by the National Religion Campaign Against Torture and local
FORNEY, Texas - George Zimmerman, the former Florida neighborhood watch leader cleared of all charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, was pulled over for speeding in North Texas on Sunday, CBS DFW reports. According to the station, Zimmerman was armed when officers pulled him over on Highway 80 in Forney, east of Dallas. (Snip) The officer reportedly did not recognize Zimmerman, who was driving a Honda pickup. Zimmerman told the officer he was armed and was then told to put the weapon in his glove compartment, according to the station.
Arizona Sen. John McCain was the Republican Party´s 2008 presidential nominee and he still wants the keys to the Oval Office. But he is beginning to sound more like a fan of likely 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. "She´s a rock star," he said in a newly released interview. "She has, maybe not glamour, but certainly the aura of someone widely regarded throughout the world," he added in a reference to her work as secretary of State. McCain, reportedly trying to win back his reputation as a GOP maverick, was asked by the New Republic
President Obama has been rolling up his sleeves campaigning across the country delivering a surreal stump speech message supposedly aimed at the middle class: big government works, Obamacare is manna from heaven, the wave of recent scandals are “phony” figments of the imagination, and all economic problems are the fault of the Republicans. Conveniently, he leaves out the bankruptcy of Detroit, a city run by his own party for more than half a century. His message is so stale and unconvincing, that even The New York Times and Washington Post have noticed. Both papers, usually loyal to Obama, remarked that
Gotta figure her lead would be even bigger without Joe Miller in the field here. Her nomination for the taking? Alaska should be a top tier pick up opportunity for Senate Republicans next year…but their top choice of a candidate is Sarah Palin. 36% of GOP primary voters in the state say they’d like Palin to be their standard bearer against Mark Begich to 26% for Mead Treadwell, 15% for Dan Sullivan, and 12% for Joe Miller.
Embattled Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner and an attorney in the Federal Election Commission’s general counsel’s office appear to have twice colluded to influence the record before the FEC’s vote in the case of a conservative non-profit organization, according to e-mails unearthed by the House Ways and Means Committee and obtained exclusively by National Review Online. The correspondence suggests the discrimination of conservative groups extended beyond the IRS and into the FEC, where an attorney from the agency’s enforcement division in at least one case sought and received tax information about the status of a conservative group,
Sen. John McCain — a Democrat? There was confusion Wednesday after the Arizona Republican mistakenly strolled into President Obama’s meeting with Senate Democrats at the Capitol. The room full of Democrats — who happened to be meeting in the same room where the Senate GOP usually holds their weekly policy luncheons — erupted in applause and laughter as the former Republican presidential candidate made his entrance. As McCain, 76, walked out of the Dem-filled space, reporters pressed him as to why he stepped foot in the room.
The former commander of special operations in Northern Africa told a closed-door briefing today that he was largely detached from events the night of the Benghazi attack as he was traveling at the time. The testimony of Col. George H. Bristol, USMC, Former Commander, Joint Special Operations Task Force-Trans Sahara, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command Africa, had been eagerly anticipated by members of Congress. Originally, lawmakers had been told by the Defense Department that he had retired — the actual date is Aug. 1, an “administrative error” according to the Pentagon — and that they didn’t have
In an interview on National Public Radio (NPR), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said her new agenda for women will give mothers access to day care so they can “earn without carrying the burden of child care.” During the interview, aired on Weekend Edition Sunday, Pelosi spoke about her newly announced agenda, which is on her website, and is titled, “When Women Succeed, America Succeeds: An Economic Agenda for Women and Families,” a plan that includes universal pre-school and access to day care for working women, and an increase in the minimum wage.
Karl Rove and more than one hundred Republican donors sent a letter to Republican members of Congress on Tuesday, urging them to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill that would include, among other provisions, granting "legal status" to illegal aliens who meet certain criteria. Anticipating that lawmakers will face resistance to the bill when they go home for the August recess, the letter marks the escalation of a campaign in which Republican leaders and donors are pressuring House Republicans to act on an immigration reform bill.
No matter how much you may hope for it, it seems unlikely that you´ll be using the phrase "Senator Sarah Palin" with any great regularity in 2015. A new poll indicates that the former Alaska governor is about as popular in the state as Barack Obama — which is to say, not very popular at all. But even more surprising, while the former vice presidential candidate has made Alaska a central part of her public image, the state´s residents split on the question of whether Palin is all that Alaskan. Conducted by Public Policy Polling,
In her first speech since taking over the Environmental Protection Agency, Gina McCarthy came out swinging Tuesday and promised to ramp up the aggressive climate change agenda laid out by President Obama.(snip)“Can we stop talking about environmental regulations killing jobs? Please, at least for today,” she said during remarks at Harvard Law School. “We need to cut carbon pollution to grow jobs. We need to cut carbon pollution to strengthen the economy. Let’s talk about it positively. Let’s approach this as an opportunity of a lifetime. There are too many lifetimes at stake.”
Mark Levin, who hosts one of America´s top radio talk shows and is considered by supporters to be the people´s pundit on the Constitution, is rallying his 8.5 million-strong audience to demand an historic convention of state governments to halt the "oppressive power" of the federal government. The author of two New York Times bestsellers on the threats to the Constitution, Levin hopes his latest, "The Liberty Amendments," out mid-August, will spark the state lawmakers to tap a rarely used Constitutional provision to institute measures that would brake President Obama´s use of executive orders, bar thousand-page laws and
