´Nazi´ theme draws leave
Times Union [Albany, NY], by Scott Waldman

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 4/13/2013 7:56:37 PM

Albany - The Albany school district has placed on leave a teacher whose persuasive writing assignment was for students to argue that Jews are evil in order to convince a Nazi official of their loyalty. The teacher was not in class at Albany High School on Friday and Superintendent Marguerite Vanden Wyngaard said the district will take some form of disciplinary action. She said it was too early to say exactly what that would be, but it could range from a letter of reprimand to termination. She did not say when the district would allow the teacher back in the classroom and suggested it may not happen

Comments:
Well, let´s see how this plays out. We´ll find out how powerful the teacher´s unions are in Albany. Suspension, with or without pay?

If the assignment was to argue that Christians are evil, then it would have been no problem.

I agree with poster #3. The assignment might have been provocative, but it was not anti-Semitic, and carried an interesting lesson on human behavior.

But of course the standard is not what lesson the teacher was trying to get across, but rather whether some bed-wetter got offended.

"Students were asked to write an essay arguing that Jews are evil in order to convince a Nazi official of their loyalty."
Then we hear from one of the students, a Miss Emily Karandy: "She said a lot of her classmates in honors English were upset at the assignment and felt terrible while working on it. She said she eventually wrote the five paragraph essay because she didn´t want to hurt her grade."
Ms. Karandy may not realize it, but she acted out exactly what the assignment was meant to teach: how we do distasteful things just so we don´t lose something. In her case, her grade.
I don´t normally agree with #3, but I do this time.

Looking from a logician´s point of view, at the core of this perverse assignment we find the nastiest possible planted axiom, especially egregious because in certain backward places and cultures, Jewish people are spoken of as unhuman and are vilified like no other people on earth. Assigning students to participate in denigrating Jews--even as an exercise--is worse than wrongheaded. It´s flat out evil and shouldn´t be tolerated for a second. This teacher should be fired, lose all pension benefits, and be prevented from ever teaching again.

As a libertarian I´m of the belief that public education should be phased completely out and replaced by charter, private, and parochial schools (and home schooling for some). Government has absolutely no business in education--it´s a waste of money--from Obama´s pernicious planned nursery school all the way through college. (Public universities should be privatized and run competitively.) Everything government touches gets corrupted. Everything.

In 1969 on a bus trip across the United States with a hundred Middle Tennessee Boy Scouts, I sat next to an 18-year-old public high school graduate who couldn´t even read at a first grade level. It damn near made me sick. Education has continued to decline in quality over the past forty years as administrators and teachers, instead of teaching students how to think, write, and figure, attempt to pack the children´s brains with propaganda, the better to control them later. This nation has been dumbed down to its intellectual and moral deathbed, and citizens ought to do something to turn around this moribund educational institution before this nation dies of ignorance.

The assignment challenges children to think about contexts outside their own experience in order to understand how things happen and why. Hannah Arendt thought and wrote about anti-Semitism extensively in an effort to understand it. And she really did want to understand it, not just condemn it. She also noted that the people one could truly rely on under Nazism were rarely those who had loudly proclaimed their tolerance and humanitarianism before the Nazis took over. Instead, she found it was often the anti-social and misanthropic types who acted in the most principled ways. Take another example: Arguably one of the truly principled heroes of The Dreyfus Case was also an anti-Semite.

#3 & #4 if you don´t see the lesson as anti-Semitic, but rather provocative, then try giving the same sort of assignment, but making the victims some other racial or religious group, and see if those groups protest, or applaud the thought provoking lesson you´ve provided.

WhenI was in HS, my mercan History teacher assigned me to take the ´´pro slavery´´ side in a debate. I knew what his purpose was, to make me step outside of my cofort zone and approach a subject from a different angle.

While this seems a bit more provocative, what with actually assigning to argue Jews are evil, it´s essentially the same thing. I was led down the road of arguing to dehumanize a race in order to prove my point.

And y´know, it didn´t make the papers.

Why did the teacher use Nazi´s instead of Muslim´s in this exercise? It would have been a real time exercise and much more pertinent. Could it be that our lefty teachers are afraid of Muslim´s......or could it be that, at heart, they are anti-Semitic?

At the same time, John Rizzo, who left the CIA as acting general counsel in 2009, said some CIA employees or contractors were overzealous in the use of the tactics but that the CIA informed lawyers at the Justice Department of the excesses. Rizzo was responsible for helping to create the legal foundation for permitting waterboarding,

General Motors Co said it would ask a U.S. court to bar lawsuits related to actions before its 2009 bankruptcy, signaling a tougher stance toward legal claims stemming from its recent recall over faulty ignition switches. GM has said it is protected from liability for claims related to incidents that occurred before it exited bankruptcy in 2009, and has taken steps to raise those issues with the court by filing motions to stay recall-related lawsuits while it asks that bankruptcy court to clarify the extent of that protection. In a filing with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas on Tuesday, GM asked for a stay on litigation

When pro-Russia rallies took place last December, seeking to rival the Maidan demonstrations in Kiev, very few ribbons were seen.
