Hi. As you’ve probably noticed, I’m not the President. I’m just a citizen. And as a citizen, I’m here at the White House today because I want to make a difference and I hope you will join me. My name is Francine Wheeler. My husband David is with me. We live in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. David and I have two sons. Our older son Nate, soon to be 10 years old, is a fourth grader at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Our younger son, Ben, age six, was murdered in his first-grade classroom on December 14th.
This is her speech. Simple, heartfelt. Nothing "shameless" about it - she has as much right to her opinion as anyone here. Her point is simple: what are we going to do to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn´t have them? Surely no one hear thinks that Adam Lanza was an example of the fine, upstanding, law-abiding people that should have unlimited access to weapons? No? Then...what would you do to help prevent the next Adam Lanza from having such access?
If you don´t like the legislation now on the table, suggest an alternative.
I have empathy for the families of Sandy Hook, just as I had empathy for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. However, just as in the case with Katrina, MSM and government are using Sandy Hook like a wet mackerel to slap you in the face constantly to keep you reminded and set you up for other agendas they are pushing that have nothing to do with that incident. Enough already.
How to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and the insane, #6, is an interesting and important question. However, it is not the one being asked. Rather, the question being asked is: "How much gun control can we impose, based upon the emotional response to Newtown?"
I have children, too. I can commiserate with the "suffering Newtown mom". I just don´t like having someone´s emotions rubbed in my face for a glaringly political purpose.
Sentimentality trumps rational , Constitutional government..A mawkish display of tears and bloody shirts gave us reverend jackson, patty Murray,Caroline maloney etc, etc..in fact Barry is a product of emotion, not reason . this shameless pathos is to make us feel ,not think.. Enough is already in law to keep order and prevent crime.. Evil , otoh, can circumvent all day long whilst rhe feelings crowd indulge in pity parties singing kumbaya...or advancing their own usurping fascist agendas.
She wouldn´t be near that podium if not solicited by the president to further his political agenda.
She absolutely has a right to her opinion, speech rights, and grief - there´s no argument with that. But should the president be exploiting her grief for his agenda? I think that´s shameless on his part.
At the single meeting the president had with the republicans during the Obamacare debacle, Ryan brought a copy of the bill and was accused of using props - what´s this then, if it isn´t using grief stricken civilians for props?
Should we, as non politicians, who criticize the current bill under consideration have to provide alternatives, just to be in the arena of the argument? I think not. Knowing a bad bill when presented is enough.
No one has to be an engineer to realize that a bridge built with balsa wood couldn´t hold up a semi. And the driver of the semi who refuses to cross the balsa wood bridge isn´t required to provide blueprints for the construction of a better bridge. He just has to have the sense to not try crossing an inferior bridge.
The gun laws of the US are stringent enough, even too much so, so they already infringe on the rights of self defense of the individual. The people hunting zones created at the institutions of education in this country are despicable. More of the same won´t make a single person safer after a thin film of ink is drawn on a piece of paper, in the shape of a man´s name, miles from any newly invented crime.
I think the round up of parents and herding them onto Air Force One is what did me in. Either the parents are being exploited, or are choosing to exploit the situation themselves. Either way, I have no respect for them. I am sure there are many relatives of those kids, parents included, who are quietly grieving and know that all of today´s hoopla would not have had one iota of an impact on the tragic situation that engulfed their lives. Adam Lanza was a madman, whose mother chose to have legal guns within his reach.
Much is made of 150 rounds having been fired in five minutes. That is nothing to even an average shooter with low-capacity magazines. It is the same buffoonery of reporting as the news anchors who breathlessly talk about how some criminal pleaded not guilty at his arraignment, even though criminal procedure would have them all do that, even if the criminal committed a crime in front of a dozen witnesses and on a surveillance camera. Unless Lanza used a 150 round magazine, the argument is pointless.
The real scandal should be that Lanza got off 150 shots without having anyone drop him like a rabid dog in the street. This is what happens when you brag about your "gun-free zones."
Feb 1, 2013...the Newtown Board of Education voted to request the presence of two kinds of guards inside the town´s elementary schools.
From reports of the school-board meeting, concerned parents cited the Sandy Hook shootings as their reason for backing an armed-guard policy. "The only thing that stopped that guy that day was when the two Newtown police burst in the building," one parent is quoted as saying.
Why weren´t those who voted for these guards included in the retinue on board AF1?
Of the 70 to 80 family members directly affected by this tragedy hussein´s crowd could only scroung up I believe eleven to bloviate about how bad guns are and not one word about the real cause, mental illness or what stopped the assault and Lanza´s self inflicted shot to the head.
The most transparent administration in history, you bet. This fraud regime is like an open book that needs to be slammed shut!
Would any other president have stooped this low to get his way?
This man thinks he´s a king, acts like a king, talks like a king, and expects us to bow in obeisance to him.
We fought to get rid of King George III when he became insufferable.
Forget Guns. This isn´t the important issue.
Wait until Obamacare´s tentacles start ruining household budgets, medical coverage by employers, full-time jobs going to part time jobs.
Do you really think Americans will put up with the calculated destruction of their lives by this man and his idiot cohorts in Congress like Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats who passed Obamacare without having read the monstrosity?
Malfeasance or misfeasance, or both. Take you pick. We´ve been screwed by a couple hundred of stupid socialist-leaning "representatives of the people".
Wonder where the breaking point will happen and when...
0bama in his next week´s address should have Patricia Smith speak out about her son Sean, who was killed in Benghazi. Sean Patrick Smith and his group requested assistance when they gave their lives in an attempt to rescue our ambassader, who also had requested help from the Hlllary and the State Department on several occasions. Patricia feels that 0bama was at fault in her son´s tragic death. 0bama will exploit the Newton mother´s for his benefit, but he will not tell the truth about Benghazi; actually, after hearing about the attack in Behghazi, 0bama went to bed.
That did it. I now officially have no sympathy for these people. Yes, they have a right to their opinion. What they do NOT have a right to do is infringe upon the liberties reinforced in the Constitution.
I cannot fathom how it would be to learn that the six year old son you sent off to school a few hours before was shot senslessly.
You and all those who lost children and family that day have our prayers and support.
But please don´t tell me these were your words. Maybe your thoughts, and yes, you have the right to your opinions about restricting second amendment rights. They may be ill-informed, but you do have the right to peacably petition your government for your grievances. Which, with what I expect with the assistance of Obama´s speechwriters you did today (or whenever you recorded this piece).
But your loss, as tragic and heartbreaking as it is, does not require me to aceede to the wishes of the writers of your comments who wish to increase government control over law-abiding citizens without restricting those who have no concern about breaking laws and killing.
May God continue to comfort you and your family through these times.
How many laws did Adam Lanza break in the course of committing the massacre at Sandy Hook? At a minimum, he stole the gun from his mother, and took a gun into a "gun-free" zone. If you count murdering his mother, (and I do), that´s three. So if three laws didn´t stop him, what evidence is there that 6 or 7 would have?
The mental health system will fail this year, as it does every year, and always will. When it does, and when a homicidal maniac, intent on mass-murder shows up in a gun-free zone near you, please use a gun.
Rabbit pellets won´t stop him, the police who are minutes away won´t stop him. Use a gun.
Even when the police arrive, they may establish a perimeter, scope out the situation, and leave a message on the answering machine of the nearest official hostage negotiator to join them ASAP.
If I am on the jury of a non-violent citizen being tried only for "unauthorized concealed weapon," I will find him innocent, in accord with the 2nd Amendment.
I hope you Ldotters will feel free to protect my local gun-free zones. I´ve got your back, if I´m on your jury, though you cannot count on my neighbors, unfortunately.
You may have noticed over these past 2,501 days that Barack Obama likes to give speeches, sometimes two or more a day. It´s better than Oval Office work. And yesterday the poor guy gave a particularly revealing one. He´s so desperate now that he modestly likened ObamaCare to the suffrage struggle and civil rights. [Snip] But here´s the largest challenge for Obama´s ObamaCare: He must ensure 40% of all enrollees are under 35 and willing to pay huge premiums for coverage they really don´t need. In the scaled eyes of our nation´s community organizer, that´s a kind of civic patriotism.
As everyone knows, California is the la-de-dah, laid-back land of liberalism that´s been Barack Obama´s political ATM for six years. Hollywood stars have loved him, fronted multi-multi-million-dollar fundraisers for him. The most populous state (home to 12 of every 100 Americans) has a Democrat governor again, two female Democrat senators and a Democrat super-majority in the state legislature that has yet to find a problem it didn´t want government making worse at great cost. In presidential politics California has been trending Democratic since 1992. [Snip] Now comes a stunning new poll revealing Obama’s California base has fallen out of love.
Never let a crisis -- or tragedy -- go to waste. So, here we are now with a weakened ObamaNation building an organizing event around the awfulness in Newtown, where a 22-year-old nut-job killed 20 innocent youngsters and six adult caretakers. No horrified parent or adult watching Connecticut a year ago needs reminding of what a national gut-kick that was. President Obama, of course, went to Newtown to utter another empty vow.
So, Barack Hussein Obama can tell where Americans are from just by looking at their faces. Imagine if he also knew their funny foreign names or detected defective English. How would Obama react if someone determined his birthplace by looking at that face of his? And what evil or good dreams lurk within that obviously wily Chicagoan´s mind. You didn´t see much about this Obama statement in the mainstream media last week. With the ObamaCare disaster all cleaned up, its website humming perfectly and the U.S. economy now roaring strongly, Obama lit out for West Coast fundraising.
According to the Obama White House, the first family consumed a Thanksgiving dinner of turkey, honey-baked ham, cornbread stuffing, oyster stuffing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, greens, green bean casserole, dinner rolls and macaroni and cheese. Then, the family washed all that down with nine kinds of pies: huckleberry, pecan, sweet potato, peach, apple, pumpkin, banana cream, coconut cream and chocolate cream. For years now First Lady Michelle Obama has been pushing her program called "Let´s Move!" for more exercise and better foods. But Gallup reports Americans prefer “Let’s Eat!”
Hello, I’m Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. As we celebrate this Thanksgiving holiday, it’s important for us all to reflect on our many blessings. Family and friends immediately come to mind. But there are many Americans who will not be able to celebrate this holiday season at their home. Some are serving our nation overseas, thousands of miles away. And in their world, the creature comforts you and I take for granted -- things like running water and electricity -- are considered luxuries.
President Obama's weekly remarks: Hi, everybody. On behalf of all the Obamas — Michelle, Malia, Sasha, Bo, and the newest member of our family, Sunny — I want to wish you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving. We’ll be spending today just like many of you — sitting down with family and friends to eat some good food, tell stories, watch a little football and. most importantly, count our blessings. And as Americans, we have so much to be thankful for.
The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they can not fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God.
Fallon: Last week, America’s longest-married couple celebrated their 81st wedding anniversary. They were all over the news. When the couple saw themselves on TV, they said, “Good for them.” Letterman: The only good news out of this ObamaCare debacle is it´s nice to know someone knows less about computers than I do. Fallon: Toronto´s troubled mayor Rob Ford now says he´s getting professional help. The professional´s name is “Cinnamon."
Standby for holiday launch! Remember back in eighth grade the kid named Joel who got straight A´s? And everyone pretty much hated him because he was doing what we all silently knew we were supposed to be doing? Well now, in the week that brings us the predictable TV news of massive Thanksgiving travel delays and Black Friday insanity comes official statistical word that the Joel´s of America have already finished all their Christmas shopping. Almost one-in-ten Americans are already all done!
Hi, everybody. Over the past couple months, most of the political headlines you’ve read have probably been about the government shutdown and the launch of the Affordable Care Act. And I know that many of you have rightly never been more frustrated with Washington. But if you look beyond those headlines, there are some good things happening in our economy. And that’s been my top priority since the day I walked into the Oval Office.
One of the dangers of speaking in public for politicians is putting their mouth on cruise control. The media´s questions are generally so predictable. And the pols become so familiar with reciting replies to certain contemporary topics that they´re tempted to turn off the brain and just spout the day´s approved talking points. Unlike many officials this long into elected service, President Obama has stuck with his teleprompter. It ensures he utters the vocabulary words pre-polled by his communications strategists for effectiveness and resonance with voters.
I have never been much of a conspiracy theorist. For me it was always Oswald by himself from the Texas School Book Depository and nothing in the intervening fifty years has disabused me of this notion. For the most part, I’m an Occam’s Razor kind of guy — the most obvious explanation is likely to be true. (Snip) To put it bluntly, Occam’s Razor has moved. Things that were once possibilities now seem almost certainties to me. Principal among those is that Obama’s academic records are perpetually unavailable for a reason — and that reason is most likely that they reveal
One of President Obama´s chief political assets has been his ability to excite young people like almost no politician in history. But the days of America´s youth fawning over the president are over. A new Harvard University Institute of Politics poll released Wednesday confirms what other surveys have shown in recent months: Millennials have soured on Obama so much this year that their opinion of him largely mirrors the American public´s. Even though Obama does not ever have to face another election, he should be worried about the findings for a couple of reasons, which we will dive into momentarily.
President Obama will cast growing income inequality and a decline in economic mobility as a “fundamental threat to the American dream” during a speech Wednesday in Washington. The speech will serve as an early preview for next year’s State of the Union address, according to a White House official, who said Obama would focus much of his energy over the next three years on the issue. “The decisions we make over the next few years will determine whether or not our children will grow up in an America where, if you work hard, you can get ahead,” the official said.
Good stuff from Jonathan Turley at today’s House hearing on executive power, although I regret that I couldn’t find a more user-friendly format for you to watch. There’s no compilation clip; you’ll have to make do with the C-SPAN embed by fast-forwarding to the time cues I give you and being patient while the vid buffers (and buffers, and buffers).(Snip)That brings us to point two: Even if Congress can’t stop Obama, the courts can. The problem there, though, says Turley, is that O and the DOJ have argued successfully in many cases that no one has standing to sue him
A stunning new study unveiled on Fox News´ Hannity finds that President Barack Obama’s White House calendar records just one face-to-face meeting between Obama and his Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in the more than three-and-a-half years leading up to the disastrous Obamacare launch. The startling statistic comes from a new Government Accountability Institute (GAI) analysis of Obama’s own official White House calendar, as well as the Politico presidential calendar, and raises new questions about Obama’s executive leadership and management throughout the implementation of his singular legislative achievement. More alarming still, the president’s schedule lists 277 private
[Video] President Obama on Wednesday declared that addressing income inequality would be the focus of “all” of the White House’s efforts “for the rest of my presidency.” In a sweeping address that touched on raising the minimum wage, investing in infrastructure and ending tax breaks for the wealthy, Obama warned that the American economy has become “profoundly unequal,” declaring economic mobility the “challenge of our time.” “The combined trends of increasing inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American dream, our way of life, and what we stand for around the globe,” he said in an hour-long
Just over two weeks ago, MSNBC host Martin Bashir delivered a harsh piece of commentary that culminated in the suggestion that someone should “s-h-i-t” in former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin‘s (R-AK) mouth. Bashir offered an abject apology on his next broadcast, but a chorus of critics continued to demand action against the host. After a reported “vacation” for the host earlier this week, Bashir announced, Wednesday afternoon, that MSNBC and Martin Bashir are parting ways. Here’s the statement from Martin Bashir, via email: After making an on-air apology, I asked for permission to take some additional time out around the Thanksgiving holiday. Upon
Nineteen people stood behind President Obama on stage in the Executive Office Building Tuesday as the president kicked off a new campaign to promote Obamacare. One of those people, a young Florida woman named Monica Weeks, introduced Obama after telling the story of being struck with Crohn´s Disease at age 19 and receiving expensive treatments for several years that were covered by her parents´ health care plan — because Obamacare allowed her to remain on that plan until age 26. Now, Weeks said, she has coverage through a job. "The Affordable Care Act gives young adults who are just starting
Amid an array of “knock-out” attacks against a number of Jews in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, a city councilwoman pointed to the success of the Jewish community as triggering the aggression. Councilwoman-elect Laurie Cumbo emphasized that while she “admire[s] the Jewish community immensely” for its work ethic, black teens may see it differently. “While I personally regard this level of tenacity, I also recognize that for others, the accomplishments of the Jewish community triggers feelings of resentment, and a sense that Jewish success is not also their success,” Cumbo, who was recently elected, wrote in a letter. Chief among the issues
Continued global warming poses a risk of rapid, drastic changes in some human and natural systems, a scientific panel warned Tuesday, citing the possible collapse of polar sea ice, the potential for a mass extinction of plant and animal life and the threat of immense dead zones in the ocean. At the same time, some worst-case fears about climate change that have entered the popular imagination can be ruled out as unlikely, at least over the next century, the panel found. These include a sudden belch of methane from the ocean or the Arctic that would fry the planet, as
America is facing a wave of strikes by its fast-food workers on Thursday a day after Barack Obama warned that inequality in the USA had soared to the point that it now posed "a fundamental threat to the American dream". Low-paid workers in McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and other fast-food outlets in 100 cities across America were due to start rolling strikes to protest at the low level of America´s $7.25 (£4.45) federal minimum wage. The strikes are the latest part of a mushrooming publicity campaign for higher wages among those working so-called "McJobs", with fast-food restaurants seen as a
The president put in his ask to Disney CEO Bob Iger at a private meeting with entertainment moguls during his Nov. 26 visit to Jeffrey Katzenberg´s DreamWorks Animation. [snip] If you have any doubt as to how much of a sports junkie Barack Obama is, check in with the entertainment moguls who attended a private briefing with the president Nov. 26 before his speech at Jeffrey Katzenberg´s DreamWorks Animation campus in Glendale. At the end of the conversation -- which touched on a myriad of topics, from piracy to Iran -- Obama revealed what´s at the top of his bucket
