Jonathan Winters, groundbreaking
comic who influenced
generations, dead at 87

LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87. The Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes, said Joe Petro III, a longtime family friend. Petro said Winters died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends. Winters was a pioneer of improvisational standup comedy, with an exceptional gift for mimicry, a grab bag of eccentric personalities and a bottomless reservoir of creative energy.

A lot of Winters lives in Robin Williams. If you ever get a chance to see footage of them together, do it. Even on Mork and Mindy they were outrageous. A gifted comedian will be missed.

Reading #4´s comment I remember hearing Robin Williams speak of his admiration and love of his mentor "Jonathan." Yes indeed, Jonathan Winters´ persona almost steps out of Robin like a ghost when he does his stand up routine. Jonathan´s facial expressions were enough to start me laughing. His impressions finished me and gave me a bellyache from laughing. We´ll all miss him. May God bless him.

I own one DVD. It´s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World with Jonathan Winters has brought me to tears of laughter for so many years. In the 1950-60 era, my grandfather received Johnny´s used clothes as my aunt, with whom he lived, was related somehow. He would proudly show me the monogramed initials on the pants. RIP Jonathan.

"Mad, Mad... World" was one of the first Blu-Rays I got... highly recommended. (It´ll take you right back to the 60s, and Winters is fantastic.)

While I don´t think a recording ofit exists, one day in the 70s, he visited the WLW broadcast booth during a Reds game, Marty and Joe interviewed him for over an hour, as some old baseball player. He never broke character and was drop dead funny.

CAMBRIDGE, Md. -- President Obama told House Democrats on Friday that his executive power to help immigrants who are in the U.S. without legal status is limited and urged them to keep pressing for legislation to overhaul the immigration system. "Don´t take your foot off the pedal," the president said in remarks to a closed-door meeting of his Democratic allies, who were gathered for the party´s annual issues retreat on the Eastern Shore. Hopes have substantially dimmed for immigration law changes this year after House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) downplayed the chances that the chamber´s Republican majority would take

A century-old debate over whether presidents should reward political donors and allies by making them ambassadors has flared again following a string of embarrassing gaffes by President Obama’s picks. The nominee for ambassador to Norway, for example, prompted outrage in Oslo by characterizing one of the nation’s ruling parties as extremist. A soap-opera producer slated for Hungary appeared to have little knowledge of the country she would be living in. A prominent Obama bundler nominated to be ambassador to Argentina acknowledged that he had never set foot in the country and doesn’t speak Spanish.

Occidental Petroleum, the longtime Los Angeles-based energy giant, announced Friday that it would move its headquarters to Houston and spin off its California assets into a separate company. The latest move is part of the company´s strategic overhaul as it seeks to bolster its profitability and share price after falling behind competitors in recent years. The move signals the end of a storied run for Occidental in Los Angeles, where it was founded nearly a century ago and grew into the nation´s fourth-largest oil company. SAN FRANCISCO — In a significant victory for gun owners, a divided federal appeals court Thursday struck down California rules that permit counties to restrict as they see fit the right to carry a concealed weapon in public. The 2-1 ruling by a U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals panel would overturn restrictions on carrying concealed handguns, primarily affecting California´s most populated regions, including Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego and San Francisco. The majority said the restrictions violate the 2nd Amendment´s guarantee of the right to bear arms because they deny law-abiding citizens the ability to carry weapons in

Valentine´s Day is an occasion to shower your significant other with flowers, chocolates, and, as one wise animated clock once said, promises you don´t intend to keep. Not the case centuries ago. Long before Valentine´s Day became Hallmark´s holiday, Feb. 14 marked the day a Roman priest was beaten with clubs, stoned, and beheaded for his attempts to protect people´s right to get married. The origin of St. Valentine, and how many St. Valentines there actually were, remains a mystery. One was a Roman priest, another an Italian bishop, and a third was a clergyman in Africa. At least every week now, there is a new story supporting the narrative of an inevitable 2016 Hillary Clinton presidential bid. Indeed, the conventional wisdom is that it is an absolute certainty that she will run. If anyone is currently saying, flat out, that Hillary isn´t running, I haven´t come across them. Is the inevitability of her run really as certain as the conventional wisdom suggests, and further, is it unfolding in an optimal manner for the potential candidate? In all likelihood, Clinton will not make a final, "go-or-no-go" decision until early next year, after the dust has settled from

Less than 24 hours after President Obama illegally rewrote the law he had previously jammed down Boehner´s -- and the country´s -- throat, Boehner handed the budding dictator a clean debt-ceiling hike. Last October, Obama vindictively shut down the federal government upon his having refused to delay ObamaCare, which of course is exactly what he himself lawlessly did on February 10, 2014! Of course, Boehner is hardly in a position to argue now, having foolishly (immensely so) accepted responsibility for the shutdown. The school of literary criticism known as reception theory holds that a text should be studied in light of its effect on its contemporaries, that a reader should be aware of the “horizon of expectations” in which a text is produced.
