‘Obama phones’ subsidy program
draws new scrutiny on the Hill

Washington Post, by Karen Tumulty

When someone in the Washington area begins to type the president’s last name into the search box of Google’s home page, the top three terms it suggests as the most popular selections are Obama, Obamacare and .?.?. Obama phone. Obama phone? A hotline, maybe, to the Oval Office? Hardly. “Obama phone” is the widely used — and misleading — nickname of a 28-year-old federal program known as Lifeline. It provides discounts, averaging $9.25 a month, on phone service for 13.3 million low-income subscribers. In the 31 / 2 years after false rumors

WTP pay for their phones, pay for their speedy internet access; do we pay for the cable/satellite TeeVee as well? Let´s see, their heating/cooling, their groceries, their health insurance. How about their burials All those freebees and not as much as a simple ´thank you, America´.

I take issue with the broad brush used in politics. Many of these programs help low income seniors as well as welfare queens making a cottage industry out of having kids for benefits.

Why not separate the two groups ?

The Kabuki dance the Democrats are so good at is obvious. ObamaPhones like ObamaCare are blatant redistribution of wealth. A large segment of the population is kept on the plantation...uneducated and dependent on the Democrats in turn for their vote( s).
Just ask one question, which party is benefited by keeping people dependent and which party is benefited by leading people to self sufficiency and respect?

The farrrr left wing WP should tell it correctly. The phones were supposed to used for only for 911 calls ...now they get the elite phone service with unlimited minutes....dems always go back to the blame the repubs, but only tell half the story...the part they want you to know.

"Lifeline, however, is not funded by taxes; it subsists on fees that are tacked on to most phone bills."

Love logic like this it. It is a fee not a tax on the people that work to afford one. This is why we have lost the war because we have lost logic to fight these words. For the record a fee or a tax redistributes money.

Clinton changed the word tax to fee, the won changed it to investments...a tax is still a tax no matter what the dems name it.

The tea party might have a lot of enemies, but they also have friends — with deep pockets. Two national tea party groups were given a combined total of almost $8 million during the last six months of fiscal year 2013, according to Roll Call. The Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund filed receipts of over $4 million and disbursements of $3.8 million leaving a little over $1 million cash on hand at the end of 2013, Roll Call reported. Almost $3 million came from donors who gave $200 or less each. The largest donor, Cary Katz, CEO of College Loan

Last month, President Barack Obama hailed income inequality as "the defining challenge of our time." Politico says nervous Democrats are "convinced" the issue will help stave off midterm election losses to Republicans. On Wednesday, however, Obama´s own pollster, Joel Benenson, told reporters at a Democratic gathering he believes "the attention on inequality is a bit overhyped." Benenson said the widening gap between rich and poor is "a real issue in America"; however, CS Monitor says Obama´s pollster "doesn´t think Americans resent people at the top who have done well--as long as the playing field is level." Benenson´s comments echo recent

Five years into the Obama presidency, the American economy is finally showing some momentum. The Commerce Department reported on Thursday that the economy grew by 3.2 percent in the final quarter of 2013, echoing the even stronger 4.1 percent pace of expansion in the summer months and providing the White House with a rare bit of good news despite dismal public approval ratings. But even if 2014 turns out to be what the president called a “breakout year” in his State of the Union address Tuesday, the country will still have a lot of catching up to do before the

Federal agents arrested the owners of two employment agencies in Houston´s vibrant Chinatown on Thursday and charged them with allegedly providing hundreds of undocumented workers, mostly from Latin America, to prep food, bus tables and wash dishes in Chinese restaurants. The Chinatown raid came as part of a multistate crackdown by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that led to the arrest of 21 other owners and managers of Chinese restaurants in South Texas, Louisiana and parts of Arkansas who allegedly employed and exploited the illegal workers. Conservative groups are mounting a major resistance effort against the Internal Revenue Service’s post-tea party targeting scandal rules, which are designed to clamp down on outside groups’ ability to organize as nonprofits and still play a role in political conversations. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell fired a major shot Thursday, taking to the chamber floor to say the rules amount to a declaration of war on free speech and vowing the GOP will try to block them. “Every American needs to know about this abuse of power,” said Mr. McConnell, Kentucky Republican. “Let me be clear: What the administration is

House Republican leaders have ruled out a special pathway to citizenship but do support granting some form of legal status and work permits to most illegal immigrants, according to the broad set of principles GOP leaders released Thursday that pushed the issue back to the political forefront. The brief document, circulated to House Republicans who are holding their annual policy retreat in Maryland, calls for giving young illegal immigrants — known as Dreamers — a chance at citizenship. Republican leaders also said they will insist on a “zero tolerance policy” for future illegal immigrants and will revamp the system to

Having already thrown away eminently winnable Senate seats in Missouri and Indiana because of moronic talk about rape, the GOP might have learned. You’d think. Huckabee wasn’t quite as egregious, just puzzling and a bit weird. Trying to make a point about Obamacare mandating free contraceptives, he inexplicably began speculating that the reason behind the freebie was the Democrats’ belief that women need the federal government to protect them from their

Moody´s rating agency has lowered the outlook for health insurers from stable to negative, blaming ObamaCare. Few Americans will shed tears for insurance companies. But the Moody´s announcement is a warning sign to taxpayers. They´ll be getting clobbered. Section 1342 of the Affordable Care Act forces taxpayers to make insurers whole for most of the losses incurred selling ObamaCare exchange plans through 2016.
