Tale Of Two Obituaries:
AP Basks In Legacy Of Chavez,
Sneers At Accomplishments

Writing in the blog The Review, J.P. Freire performs a devastating examination of how the Associated Press eulogized former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on Monday versus how the news service examined the legacy of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez upon his death. What Freire found was an evident sense of admiration for Chavez’s accomplishments as the Latin American state’s autocratic leader, but a distinct lack of respect for Thatcher’s achievements in office. “Love her or loathe her, one thing’s beyond dispute: Margaret Thatcher transformed Britain,” AP opened the former U.K. prime minister’s obituary on Monday.

New guidelines on how the Justice Department can monitor the media will be published in the next coming weeks, Attorney General Eric Holder said at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who has been an advocate for media protections, noted that it has been more than six months since a report was given to President Barack Obama with proposed changes to the Department guidelines on criminal investigations that involve the news media. Holder said he had hoped to have the guidelines done by the hearing but that there was a "glitch toward the end," though

WASHINGTON- Given the U.S. economy´s growing strength, the Federal Reserve pushed ahead Wednesday with a plan to shrink its bond-buying program, even though the prospect of reduced stimulus and higher interest rates has rattled global markets. The central bank said it will cut its monthly bond purchases starting in February by $10 billion to $65 billion. It also reaffirmed a plan to keep short-term rates at record lows to try to reassure investors that it will keep supporting an economy that´s stronger than at any point since the recession yet remains less than fully healthy. Wendy Davis’s filing to run for Governor of Texas left an open seat to be filled by residents of Tarrant County, Texas (Fort Worth area). Five Republicans and three Democrats have filed to run for election to this Texas State Senate seat. Recently, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz weighed in on behalf of one of the Republicans in the race, Konni Burton of Colleyville, Texas. Have a question on your tax returns? Don´t ask the IRS. As tax day looms, an annual watchdog report to Congress finds that the agency is falling short when it comes to answering Americans´ questions about the convoluted tax code. The National Taxpayer Advocate found only 61 percent of people seeking to speak with a customer service representative last year got through to anybody -- leaving nearly 20 million calls unanswered. The report largely blamed budget cuts, and lamented the impact the poor customer service is having on taxpayers. "At the risk of vast understatement, it is a sad state

Sen. The House oversight committee has asked a lawyer who’s helping run the criminal investigation into IRS targeting of tea party groups to testify to Congress next week, seeking to find out where the investigation stands and whether her political leanings have undermined the probe. Rep. Jim Jordan, chairman of a key oversight subcommittee, sent a letter Tuesday to the lawyer, Barbara Bosserman, requesting her appearance at a Feb. 6 hearing. He gave her until Thursday to decide whether she would voluntarily comply. “With your history of extensive financial and personal support for the president and the Democratic Party, your involvement

Icy chaos gripped the South on Wednesday after a rare winter storm that killed at least six people, stranded children in schools overnight and paralyzed travel in several states, including hundreds of flight cancellations at the world´s busiest airport. As daylight faded, helicopters took to the skies to search for stranded drivers, some who have now been stuck in their vehicles for more than 24 hours with temperatures plunging again into the teens. The National Guard were delivering food, water and gas - or a ride home - in Humvees to people who were stuck on roads after the storm

Good evening. I’m Senator Mike Lee, from Utah. In the few minutes I have tonight – I’d like to speak especially to those Americans who may feel they have been forgotten by both political parties: Those individuals and families who work hard, play by the rules, balance their budgets, honor the Golden Rule ... and don’t understand why their government in Washington can’t do the same. You are probably as frustrated as I am about an ever-growing government that somehow thinks it is okay to lie to, spy on and even target its own citizens. Many hard-working Americans are discouraged and wondering what, if anything, can be done.

WASHINGTON — President Obama plans to sign an executive order requiring that janitors, construction workers and others working for federal contractors be paid at least $10.10 an hour, using his own power to enact a more limited version of a policy that he has yet to push through Congress. The order, which Mr. Obama will highlight in his annual State of the Union address on Tuesday night, is meant to underscore an increasing willingness by the president to bypass Congress if lawmakers continue to resist his agenda, aides said. After a year in which most of his legislative priorities went nowhere,

Of all the troubling aspects of the Obama presidency, none is more dangerous than the president´s persistent pattern of lawlessness, his willingness to disregard the written law and instead enforce his own policies via executive fiat. On Monday, Mr. Obama acted unilaterally to raise the minimum wage paid by federal contracts, the first of many executive actions the White House promised would be a theme of his State of the Union address Tuesday night. The president´s taste for unilateral action to circumvent Congress should concern every citizen, regardless of party or ideology. President Barack Obama delivered a State of the Union Address on Tuesday that was important less for what he said than for what it says about him. The speech was long, more than an hour. At times it was defiant, at others it felt almost conciliatory. But mostly the speech was forgettable, disposable – a long list of modest policy proposals that will not be remembered for much longer than their echo in the House chamber. On domestic policy, we knew what to expect. The stars of last year’s speech – immigration and gun control – were mere afterthoughts this year,

A year after saying it didn’t matter what sparked the vicious attack on the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Hillary Rodham Clinton is calling the incident the “biggest regret” of her stint as secretary of state.“My biggest, you know, regret is what happened in Benghazi,” Clinton told an auto dealers conference in New Orleans on Monday. Clinton didn’t acknowledge any particular blunder in the days or weeks leading up to the 2012 siege that resulted in the deaths of four Americans. Critics blame unmet security requests by the tragic US Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, who was killed in the attack. Clinton

It´s a good thing I remembered where I stored all my old ski gear, including the thermal underwear that I hadn´t worn in years. I´ve needed it during a season in which even the Deep South has seen an epidemic of frozen pipes, single-digit temperatures and school cancellations without snow.
