The Lessons of Zombie-Mania
Wall Street Journal, by DANIEL W. DREZNER

Original Article

Posted By:FlyRight, 4/6/2013 1:44:06 PM

By any observable metric, zombies are totally hot right now. Look at movies like "Warm Bodies" and the coming "World War Z," the ratings for AMC´s hit series "The Walking Dead" (12.9 million viewers for its recent season finale) and $2.5 billion in annual sales for zombie videogames. Over the past decade, between a third and a half of all zombie movies ever made have been released. A glance at Google GOOG -1.51%Trends reveals that in the past few years, interest in flesh-eating ghouls has far outstripped popular enthusiasm for vampires, wizards and hobbits.

Mindless entertainment for the brain-dead, in my view.
Nobody ever axed MOI, however.

Because Zombies are an allegorical lesson of what will soon be happening in our own society.

The Zombies (Low Info 0bama Voters) will soon be pounding at our doors since their welfare society collapsed.

Although Vampires should be just as popular...
That is an allegorical tale of our rulers in Washington D.C.

Those who watch such movies in the first place will just go on to the next genre in a few years. They have as much depth as the movies they like. Next will come vampire zombies I guess.

In medieval England, complaining about bad things was a very poor idea if one wanted to keep their head upon their shoulders. Thus the rise of many nursery rhymes, poking abstract derision at the evils of the day. Zombieism is merely the present day version of this self-censorship. We have a real and dangerous enemy in the world but we may not mention it´s name or stand up to it directly, else the entire weight of the progressive apparatus will crush us.

We may, however, pursue our Zombie fetishes.

Frankly, I have had enough of zombies. Even "The Walking Dead" is now more focused on the battle between the crazy Governor and other groups. Why, because there is only so much you can do with zombies.

Two notes. One, there are people in this country, and I am not kidding, who think the Zombie Apocalypse is real is going to happen. They are the "War of the Worlds" lunatics from the 30s updated to today.

Second, I never understood the logic in the Zombie movies. If you can accept the idea that some virus (or whatever) reactivates the dead, and they ONLY want to eat non-Zombie humans, than the logic that follows is that with few non-Zombie humans alive, they would all starve to death in a few weeks, or be too weak to move. Or does one have to accept the change in all physical laws and cellular function in total?

In "reality", a few weeks or maybe months and almost all the zombies would be dead or immobilized. Where do they get the power to keep going? The sun? Wind machines behind their eyeballs?

I know, I know, it´s entertainment, but if you are going to represent the show with ultraviolent, realistic gore, you can´t go unrealistic with everything else....

There is another angle that may account for the popularity of zombies as evil Other: diversity, multiculturalism, identity politics, victimhood and political correctness. Care must still be exercised, of course, in the depiction of individual zombies. Snares and traps lay in wait for the unwary producer who fails to achieve diversity or renders unfavorable impressions of various races, sexes, groups, religions, etc. But this is relatively easy to manage as long as the evil Other is demonstrably dead.

Zombies are about the only safe villains left. All the traditional villains are now on a protected or endangered species list or are alive and quick to take offense. But so far there are no spokespeople or activists for the living dead. Hence the latter can be blamed, slandered, stereotyped, profiled, caricatured, feared, attacked and, above all, bloodily dealt with, shot, blown up and subjected to all of the usual gratifying modes of violent special effects without fear of offending some group or special interest.

I agree with your observations #14.

Of interesting contrast is both the old and the new Planet of the Apes movies. With some exceptions, the smarter, more talented apes were played by white actors, quite often the war mongering gorillas were played by black actors.

How´d they ever get away with that?!

The Clinton Library took the wraps off another batch of White House documents Friday afternoon, offering new insights into how aides scrambled to address the Monica Lewinsky scandal, how the hot-button issue of race tied the White House staff up in knots and how former President Bill Clinton cast a wide net for advice in advance of his major speeches. The new set of Clinton documents make little mention of then-first lady Hillary Clinton, and so are unlikely to have a major political impact. However, many of the memos were written by or mention aides to Bill Clinton who now hold

WASHINGTON — The online insurance marketplace in Oregon is such a technological mess that residents have been signing up for health coverage by hand. In Texas, political opposition to President Obama’s health law is so strong that some residents believe, erroneously, that the program is banned in their state. But in Connecticut, a smoothly functioning website, run by competent managers, has successfully enrolled so many patients that officials are offering to sell their expertise to states like Maryland, which is struggling to sign people up for coverage. With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.
