9/11 Remains Still Found,
and Still Sought

New York Times, by Jim Dwyer

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 4/5/2013 9:48:01 AM

You could hear the deep breath, the pause before a conversational plunge. On the phone were Monica Gabrielle and Kristen Breitweiser. Their husbands died at the World Trade Center in the Sept. 11 attack. This week, a new effort to find remains from the site uncovered 39 pieces of what appeared to be human bones. That was the yield from the first three days of work in a process that is expected to go on for at least two months.

I can understand the extreme sadness that the families of the 9/11 victims must feel. Maybe I am not normal, but how does having a bone or a small fracture of their deceased love one help with closure?

The incompetence surounding the recovery of remains at Ground Zero is staggering to me.

It is overshadowed, however, by the scandal surrounding the number of people who are receiving disability payments because they assert chronic illness as a result of working at the site. Too bad we don´t have investigative journalists in NY. . .

#4, the nation may be wrung dry of sympathy for these two particular professional widows, Gabrielle and Breitweiser.

And there were a two more, who together with Breitweiser called themselves "the Jersey girls." This little group made a spectacle of themselves, getting all glammed and dolled up and getting their faces on tv. They were very political -- and guess in what direction?

Chris Matthews loved to have "the Jersey girls" as guest panelists, especially Breitweiser, over whom he openly drooled.

I for one however am not wrung dry of sympathy for all the families who lost loved ones on 9/11. Many never sought the spotlight, or tried to gain financially off the deaths of their husbands like the "Jersey girls" did. If my husband or son or daughter had died in the WTC on 9/11, yes, I´d want whatever little fragments were left.

Less than a year after raising $1.5 million for his Bitcoin exchange start-up BitInstant, CEO Charlie Shrem has been charged with money laundering. A news release from U.S. prosecutors in Manhattan said that Shrem knowingly facilitated illegal purchases on the now-shuttered underground drug marketplace Silk Road. Silk Road was a Web site that allowed users to buy everything from heroin to fake IDs. To help preserve users´ anonymity, the site required all transactions to be conducted in bitcoins. According to the government, a man named Robert Faiella worked with Shrem to sell bitcoins to Silk Road users. The two men

There comes a moment in so many memorable games when a team will turn its anxious gaze to one player and ask a simple question: You got this covered? In the National Football League, it is likely to be the kicker, quarterback or running back. On Sunday, it was the weatherman. At 8 a.m., John Bateman, a meteorologist hired by the league, made his first presentation to some two dozen executives who are looking to him to tell them what to expect on Super Bowl Sunday. “Not much pressure, right?” Mr. Bateman, 43, said wryly. Every morning in the week leading up to the game,

Are House Republicans planning to

In the House of Representatives, immigration reform is not only not dead, it´s actually the subject of a lot of working and talking as Republicans prepare for their annual retreat this weekend. That much has been clear at least since Speaker John Boehner announced the GOP will come up with a statement of "principles" on immigration reform that might -- or might not -- lead to legislation. But the Wall Street Journal stirred a lot of interest this weekend when it reported that GOP leaders are hoping to put one over on voters who oppose reform. The plan, the Journal said,

Call me a cockeyed optimist but many of the recent reports about our energy resources and discoveries in medical advances conjure up visions of an America enjoying low gas and energy prices; low unemployment, high wages and low cost medical treatments. None of these changes will be possible, however, unless we have a government willing to allow them. American citizens (legitimate citizens, not just residents) can vote to elect a government that is not beholden to special interest donors and lobbyists. While this sounds unlikely at the moment, it is not impossible especially if the comatose voters who got us

The release of Justin Bieber’s mugshot once again reminds us just how fascinating these little pieces of celebrity photography can be. Does the person under arrest have the presence of mind to flash their signature smile, as Bieber evidently did, or are they so far off the deep end that they lose all sense of vanity and simply succumb to their new reality? To examine this phenomenon, below is a look back at some of the most remarkable mugshots from prominent media figures over the last several decades, for too many of whom were arrested in Florida.

Cuomo´s Place

At the 1992 Democratic National Convention, the pro-life Democratic governor of Pennsylvania, Robert Casey, was barred from speaking. The message was if you are pro-life, you have no place in the Democratic party. The new attitude of the Democratic party, at least as represented by New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo, is if you are pro-life, you have no place in a blue state. During a January 17 interview with Susan Arbetter of WCNY’s “The Capitol Pressroom,” Cuomo, angry at Republican opposition to his agenda, offered his critique of the GOP. “Who are they?” Cuomo demanded to know. No doubt Mayor de Blasio was relieved to beat it out of town Thursday and leave behind inconvenient questions about the botch of this week’s snowstorm. Plainly he is more comfortable on a stage in Washington, where he declared to his fellow mayors that it’s their job “to address the root causes of inequality.” Now, this week’s snowstorm was not on the scale of the one that so damaged Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s reputation in 2010, much less the one that forever tarnished John Lindsay many decades earlier. But it carries a warning especially apt for a man who views himself as

Has the left’s attempt to use the lethal-injection process to ban the death penalty backfired? Consideration of firing squads for implementing the death penalty is not a fringe issue and would bring back the humaneness the left claims it wants in the process. As often as I can, I laud the importance, value and decency of the death penalty. As a feminist, I’ve spent a great deal of my adult life as an advocate for women, educating on violence against women and agitating for justice for women in a system that far too often forgets the victims on the receiving end

Stephen Hawking has produced a "mind-bending" new theory that argues black holes do not actually exist - at least not in the way we currently perceive them. Instead, in his paper, Information Preservation and Weather Forecasting for Black Holes, Hawking proposes that black holes can exist without 'event horizons', the invisible cover believed to surround every black hole.During a previous lecture, 'Into the Black Hole', Hawkins described an event horizon as the boundary of a black hole, "where gravity is just strong enough to drag light back, and prevent it escaping".
“Falling through the event horizon, is a bit like going over Niagara Falls in a canoe", he said. "If you are above the falls, you can get away if you paddle fast enough, but once you are over the edge, you are lost. There's no way back.

I personally have not signed up for Amazon’s premiere, super-duper, fancy-dancy, wave-o’-the-future membership program, even though I’m a frequent customer. But I’m fascinated by the transformation people talk about once they do. “Oh, you’ll see,” they tell me, “you’ll see.” On its face, Prime offers two simple things: Free two-day shipping on most purchases, and access to streaming movies and TV shows. All for $80 a year. Whether or not people need two-day shipping, a few things seem to happen once they

The redacted report of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Committee that was released on January 15 has left some to draw the conclusion that Stevens rejected additional security and to imply that he is responsible for the success

The former first lady and potential 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, who has had drivers for much of her three decades in public life, said Monday that she hasn´t driven a car since 1996. Clinton made the confession at the National Automobile Dealers Association meeting in New Orleans. “The last time I actually drove a car myself was 1996,” the 66-year-old Clinton told the audience. “And I remember it very well, and so does the Secret Service, which is why I haven’t driven since then.”
