Mark Kelly, retired Navy fighter pilot and former astronaut, husband of former Congresswoman, Gabby Giffords, is much in the news right now as he pushes for stricter gun control across the country. He´s popping up on the tube everywhere and Internet stories about his gun-purchasing activities abound. While he´s the ideal spokesman for liberals, a former warrior who espouses stricter gun control legislation, there´s a good deal of criticism building out there in the blogosphere.
I have no use for Mark Kelly, especially now that he´s exploiting the horrifying shooting of his wife. But, it´s a stretch to correlate the dog´s attack on the baby seal to a crazy with a gun. The writer simply needed a hook for his story.
It´s not such a stretch to make the analogy between the shooting of his wife to the dog attacking the baby seal. mark Kelly and the Left want to demonize every lawful gun owner out there because of the actions of a sick, demented few. Just like so many do when a "pit bull" attacks someone - the entire breed is considered dangerous because of the actions of a few.
My theory is that Kelly has come unhinged because the cushy life he thought he´d have as the spouse of a rising Dem star was destroyed and he´s left with a handicapped wife (of questionable mental acuity)that he can´t ditch.
So much for the "crisis" predicted by doomsayers. The purported catastrophe that the partial federal government "shutdown" would cause on Wall Street has failed to develop. Marketwatch reports, "U.S. stocks on Tuesday climbed for the first session in three, bouncing back from multi-week lows...." (snip) In the meantime, the public is learning that most of the federal government employees are not essential, and that we can get along fine with a smaller government.
I got my letter today. I was self employed for my business career. No retirement after 20 years and no pension. I was required to save for my retirement and rely on the expected historical yields that I have come to expect from my 60 years. The major insurance company with which I have had my family health insurance for over 20 years said they are no longer offering the policy under which I am covered. It was a high deductible. In other words, I paid nearly all of my bills out of pocket. Didn´t particularly like it, but settled for it. Now
Republicans are falling into the trap the Democrats have set for them. By repeatedly voting to overturn Obamacare without proposing any effective alternative, House Republicans are allowing Democrats to brand them as "enemies of the poor." The public does not like Obamacare but they do want healthcare reform, especially with regard to soaring costs. Previous Republican plans, though sensible, have addressed secondary matters such as tax breaks, administration and insurance and have not considered the fundamental issue of reducing costs by radically changing our antiquated healthcare processes.
No one can deny the nature of jihad after last week´s horrors in Kenya were broadcast around the world. Everybody who saw the brutal Nairobi mall killings gets it. But our profoundly corrupt and Muslim-penetrated media and political class will keep denying those horrors. British PM David Cameron just made the usual nauseating pronouncement that "Islam means peace." The ruling classes in the West were able to twist and cover up the truth after 9/11. They are desperate to peddle denial, because they are deeply afraid that popular outrage will destroy their power. Hillary hired a Muslim Brotherhood loyalist, Huma Abedin,
In one of his more disgraceful outbursts, John McCain recently blasted Ted Cruz (snip) Maybe I am misreading McCain´s response to Cruz, but I infer that the implication here is: we are all slaves by nature and must submit to whichever coterie has attained power over the ever-growing and self-enriching amoeba of Washington, D.C. I felt hurt. Then I felt angry. Then I wondered if there is some deeper metaphysics to what McCain said. Is he perhaps striking at some eternal wisdom about the human condition -- resistance is futile? Or is John McCain just very old?
Not too long ago, I spent a few days at an oceanfront resort hotel. While I was there, an Islamic group of about a hundred people checked in for a few days. My stay at the beach provided an unforeseen opportunity to observe their psychosocial process. I got to watch a group of jeans-clad teenagers plot to escape their parents. I watched a father grab and swat his son, who was running up and down a broad, carpeted staircase (good luck keeping that one down on the farm). One evening, a woman in a full black burqa walked into the lobby. At
Apparently, people are not signing up for Obamacare at anywhere near the levels necessary to sustain the illusion of public acceptance. We know this not because any data has been released, but rather by the self-evident desperation of the sales effort. Just as a desperate drowning man flails his arms about, seeking to hold onto something that can save him, so has the Obamacare marketing team seized upon the cheapest of cheap tricks. Behold: (snip)If there ever were a campaign targeted at low information, emotionally-swayed people, this is it. The only question is: what happens when this doesn´t work? There are
The current campaign to deprive President Obama´s health care leviathan of the life-sustaining tax dollars it needs for full bureaucratic metastasis is what left-wingers call a consciousness-raising exercise. It matters next to nothing if current Republican efforts succeed in immediately defunding Obamacare. That´s because this is just the opening round (snip)Although the master of political theater, Rules for Radicals author Saul Alinsky, was an irredeemably anti-American Marxist with a taste for political violence, he wasn´t wrong about everything. He believed in using public spectacles to generate the friction that is a precondition of change. "Action comes from keeping the heat
Does the extinguished candle care about the darkness? Ask the huddled masses who are yearning to be free. America was once thought of as a light unto nations. Obama has single-handedly extinguished that light. (snip)As the most powerful man in the world, he would level the playing field, even if it meant cutting America off at the knees. Good and evil would be made equivalent, with evil sanctioned by the world´s only remaining superpower. He turned against our allies (particularly Israel) and showed them that America could not be relied on. He taxed us into poverty and stirred up racial
The intriguing possibility that Lois Lerner might turn John Dean is on the table. Patrick Howley of The Daily Caller has tracked down what seems to be going on behind the scenes. IRS scandal figure Lois Lerner is negotiating through her lawyers with Rep. Darrell Issa´s House Oversight and Government Reform Committee about possibly gaining immunity to testify again in the committee´s investigative hearings.(snip)Because it appears she was less than truthful in her testimony, Lerner has a lot to lose. She just retired and now reportedly is getting paid $50 large a year until she dies as a parting gift
Dr. Thomas Sowell, in his recent column for National Review, asserts that the effort to defund Obamacare is an unnecessary "distraction" which serves only to help the president and Democrats.(snip)options are not a luxury we conservatives have. We have been under siege, and are now surrounded, awaiting the coming salvos of Obamacare implementation which will decimate American liberty. Government bureaucrats stand ready to sign up millions of new dependents to the government healthcare rolls, whose only job will be to vote for Democrats in the coming elections to ensure continued benefits -- which by hook, crook, or Democrat-organized bussing to
Although Al Shabaab is the largest and most violent terrorist group in Somalia, there is relatively little known about this Al Qaeda group´s day-to-day functioning. Formed in the chaos of Mogadishu in 2006 by the radical Islamic Courts in the capital city, Al Shabaab -- translated from Arabic as "The Youth" -- originally performed duties as enforcers and police for the court. (snip) In order to put a human face to Al Shabaab, I arranged an interview with Ahmed, a 24 year old, self-described member of Al Shabaab, in the Sahafi Hotel in Mogadishu in late June. He arrived a
The federal government lost its checkbook at midnight, and it may not find it for days or weeks. As the zero-hour drew closer on Monday, with other avenues exhausted, the White House´s Office of Management and Budget told federal agencies that they ´should now execute plans for an orderly shutdown due to the absence of appropriations.´ House Republican leaders on the Rules Committee had discussed the procedures for both parties to appoint ´conferees´--negotiating representatives--for a joint House-Senate conference committee empowered to hash out a compromise of the budget battle that has consumed Washington for days. The House GOP scrambled all
Perhaps no historical figure is more deeply mired in legend and myth than Jesus of Nazareth. Outside of the Gospels — which are not so much factual accounts of Jesus but arguments about His religious significance — there is almost no trace of this simple Galilean peasant who inspired the world’s largest religion. But there’s enough biblical scholarship about the historical Jesus to raise questions about some of the myths that have formed around Him over the past 2,000 years. 1. Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The first Christians seem to have had little interest in Jesus’s early years. Stories about His
Today, more than three and a half years after the Democrats passed Obamacare into law, the overhaul’s exchanges — its East German–like government marketplaces — will finally, sort of, open for business. The Democrats fully expect their fellow Americans to be so excited about buying government-approved insurance through these government-run exchanges that they’re choosing to shut down the government rather than delay the individual mandate for a year. Better to shut down the government, it would seem, than let Americans freely decide — even for a year — whether or not to buy Obamacare-based insurance. Alas, the individual mandate’s penalties
First lady Michelle Obama tweeted on Tuesday afternoon that her Twitter account will see fewer updates due to the government shutdown. Due to Congress’s failure to pass legislation to fund the government, updates to this account will be limited. #Shutdown 12:55 PM - 1 Oct 2013. In 2009, FactCheck.org found that the first lady had a staff of 24 people. It is unclear whether any of the first lady’s staff have been furloughed as a result of the government shutdown.
“We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.” — Barack Obama, October 30, 2008 “We are going to have to change our conversation; we’re going to have to change our traditions, our history; we’re going to have to move into a different place as a nation.” — Michelle Obama, May 14, 2008 There certainly is no question that Barack Obama wants to change the United States. And there clearly is no doubt that such fundamental transformation is difficult, given our tripartite system of government — even though Obama entered office with large Democratic majorities in
If President Obama were really clever, he’d jump at the Republicans’ proposal in the continuing resolution to delay Obamacare for one year. A one-year delay is perhaps the only chance to prevent the Obamacare exchanges from becoming a disaster. Don’t take my word for it. Here’s Kevin Counihan, chief executive of Connecticut’s exchange, Access Health CT: “It is highly complex , it’s unprecedented and it’s not going to be smooth…. This is a two- to three-year implementation we’re doing in 10 months. I wish we had one more year.” The problem is that the test runs have revealed the exchange websites aren’t
The Washington region, home to the largest concentration of federal workers and contractors in the nation, could lose an estimated $200?million a day and could see more than 700,000 jobs take a financial hit if the federal government shuts down Monday night, according to a local economist’s projections. And that’s not counting the blow to tourism, one of the region’s economic mainstays, if the Smithsonian museums, the National Zoo, Civil War battlefields and other federally funded attractions are shuttered, said Stephen Fuller, director of George Mason University’s Center for Regional Analysis. “This is serious,” Fuller said. “The national economy may
A group of World War II veterans in an Honor Flight group Tuesday knocked over barriers imposed during the government shutdown at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C., to get inside. As part of the federal government shutdown, national parks are closed. But the group of veterans continued to the monument Tuesday, as reported by Stars and Stripes.
The White House and the Department of the Interior rejected a request from Rep. Steven Palazzo’s office to have World War II veterans visit the World War II memorial in Washington, the Mississippi Republican told The Daily Caller Tuesday. Palazzo helped the veterans commit an act of civil disobedience against the Park Service Tuesday, when the heroes stormed through barricades around the closed memorial. The veterans were visiting the memorial as part of Honor Flight, a non-profit that provides veterans free transport to the nation’s capital to visit the memorials to the wars they fought in. “We got the heads up
So far, so good. Just checked the backyard. No pieces of fallen sky yet. Hours into the partial federal government shutdown and it´s difficult to tell there is one. Save for the humorous desperation of TV folks trying to find something, anything that could be labeled calamity and blamed on those political toads in D.C.. So far, the great partial government shutdown of 2013 looks like a full bust. Like that Y2K apocalypse that didn´t happen. Or President Obama´s dire sequester warnings that went Poof! This faux crisis really has little to do with spending.
With a government shutdown just hours away on Monday, White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Obama still plans to go to Asia this weekend. "We don´t have any changes to announce. We plan to make this trip," Carney told reporters at the White House Monday. "The president, as president, looks forward to and believes it is important to travel to Asia in order to promote our economic interests in Asia and our strategic interests in Asia." One of the Republicans´ criticisms of Obama is his absolute refusal to negotiate on a stopgap funding bill and the debt limit, even when he´s
After Senator Elizabeth Warren spoke at a luncheon in Beverly Hills, Calif., last month, women from the audience swarmed around her, many of them asking the same question: will you run for president? (Snip) Ms. Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, said in an interview that she was not interested in seeking the presidency. And despite talk of a draft movement among some activists, it is difficult to imagine her taking on former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. But in seizing on issues animating her party’s base — the influence of big banks, soaring student loan debt and the widening gulf
