It’s uncanny. Unless, of course, it isn’t. The sons of two famous politicians made their potential presidential stand at CPAC — each son having achieved elective office on his own. Yet somehow… in some strange, perhaps not so mysterious fashion… each son sounds… like… yes indeed: Dad 2.0. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush sounds like ex-President Dad George H.W. Bush, not to mention ex-President Brother George W. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul takes the Senate floor for a champion filibuster, followed by a CPAC speech, sounding ever so more than slightly like former presidential candidate and now ex-Congressman Dad Ron Paul.
I have never heard of a Senator going through the budget program by program to check whether it fell under the Constitutional limits on government and at the same time was judged to be effective by government inspectors. Yet this is the only way that you hack out hundreds of billions of dollars from the government. Rand has done that saving only Pell Grants from the Department of Education and the reactor and spent rod regulatory programs from Department of Energy. My definition of mossback doesn´t include people doing groundbreaking things for traditional reasons.
Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX) publicly came out against a conference committee with the Senate’s “Gang of Eight” legislation at a town hall in his district. A video of the event was provided to Breitbart News by local Tea Party activists. In early questioning on immigration, Olson described the Senate bill as “DOA,” short for “dead on arrival.” Ins final question on immigration, local Tea Partier Robert Gonzalez asked: “This is important because you said it’s DOA. Harry Reid ensured that if the bill goes to conference, he said we will get amnesty. The question is, are you for or against going
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who has been one of the leading proponents of defunding Obamacare, said establishment politicians in Washington, D.C. are "scared to death" of the grassroots because they do not want to be held accountable. Speaking with Breitbart News Executive Chairman Stephen K. Bannon on Breitbart News´s broadcast of the Exempt America rally on Tuesday, Cruz, as he often does on the stump, spoke of the "paradigm shift" that has coincided with the rise of the grassroots in American politics, which he said has changed the playing field on which politics is played.
Charles Barkley was right. Athletes shouldn’t be role models. Many of those who have been blessed with great athletic ability are flawed as human beings. It plays out in headlines on almost a daily basis. But then there is Jack Nicklaus. He is my hero. He was when I was a kid, and he is now. That is saying something, coming from a jaded old sportswriter like myself, who long ago lost any illusion that those I cover are heroic. But Nicklaus, who won a record 18 golf majors, is different. Jack gets it. Rewind to a few years ago.
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) said Republicans could defund Obamacare by changing the rules on mandatory spending they themselves created. He said the House leadership was scared to take that stand because they think it will cost them elections, even though a majority of Americans disapprove of Obamacare. Speaking to Breitbart News Executive Chairman Stephen K. Bannon on Breitbart News´ broadcast of the "Exempt America" rally on Tuesday, Gohmert said the Republican leadership does not understand that the GOP will lose the trust of the American people if they stop fighting for what they promised Americans they would fight for. "They honestly believe
Every so often the wonks of wishful thinking give us an article about how blacks are becoming Republicans, how Hispanics are supposedly a natural GOP constituency, or, as is the subject here today, how the millennial generation is turning "conservative." Perhaps pundits asserting the last thing recall Winston Churchill´s observation, "If you´re not a liberal at 20, you have no heart; if you´re not a conservative at 40, you have no brain." And perhaps they overlook that it´s possible to raise a brainless generation.
Sources close to House conservative leaders have confirmed to Breitbart News that House GOP leadership is planning to cave and fund Obamacare’s implementation for at least the rest of 2013. Text of the Continuing Resolution (CR) that will fund the government for 60-75 days will be released on Tuesday, the conservative source said, before a House vote on Thursday. The move comes abruptly as conservatives are ramping up their final push on House leadership with a big Tea Party rally outside the Capitol on Tuesday calling for Obamacare’s defunding. House Speaker John Boehner’s spokesman Michael Steel told Breitbart News the
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) will honor former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with this year’s Liberty Medal from the National Constitution Center. The award will be presented to Clinton on September 10th, the eve of the first anniversary of the terrorist attack on the United States mission in Benghazi that killed four Americans. The Christian Science Monitor reports that Bush, a potential GOP contender in the 2016 presidential race, is chairman of the board of trustees of the National Constitution Center located in Philadelphia. “Former Secretary Clinton has dedicated her life to serving and engaging people across the world in
Unless President Obama can show Congress that his planned Syria strike is linked to a larger - and coherent - strategy, legislators should just say no. So far, his explanations, and those of his cabinet members at congressional hearings, have only added to the confusion. "What is it you´re seeking?" Sen. Bob Corker (R., Tenn.) asked Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, in trying to elicit the broader goals of military action. The general replied candidly, "I can´t answer that, what we´re seeking." That moment of testimony encapsulated the dilemma for the Congress and the country. If
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush will present the National Constitution Center’s (NCC) 2013 Liberty Medal to Hillary Clinton during a Sept. 10 ceremony in Philadelphia, one day before the first-year anniversary of the terror attacks in Benghazi, Libya while Clinton was secretary of state. “The Liberty Medal recognizes individuals who have furthered the ideals of freedom, democracy, and equality, often against great odds,” NCC President and CEO Jeffrey Rosen said. “Hillary Clinton has devoted her life to expanding opportunities for ‘We the People’ not just in this country but around the globe.” “Former Secretary Clinton has dedicated her life to
There may be no official rule book for being a liberal, but that doesn´t mean there aren´t rules. There are actually quite a few rules liberals go by and the more politically active liberals become, the more rigidly they tend to stick to their own code of behavior. These rules, most of which are unspoken, are passed along culturally on the Left and viciously enforced. Ironically, many liberals could not explain these rules to you and don´t even consciously know they´re following them. So, by reading this article, not only will you gain a better understanding of liberals, you´ll know
Yet again, congressional Republicans have backed themselves into a corner by believing the Left’s anti-GOP talking points — this time on Obamacare. “Shutting down the government just because I’m for keeping it open? That’s not an economic plan,” Obama said in Florida last month. “Defunding the Affordable Care Act is not achievable through shutting down the federal government,” Senator Richard Burr (R., N.C.) parroted. As Republican senators Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Rand Paul, and Marco Rubio keep repeating, though few listen, they aim to shut down nothing. They want a continuing resolution that funds the entire federal government past September 30, except for
You might expect the leader of the Catholic Church in Chicago to explain his opposition to same-sex marriage on the basis of his religious tenets, but Cardinal Francis George says that’s secondary. “This is first of all a rational issue before it’s a faith issue,” the cardinal told me in an interview this week. “That is, it’s nature that tells us what marriage is, that in marriage, men and women aren’t interchangeable.” “We didn’t invent marriage. The church didn’t invent marriage. The state didn’t invent marriage. Nature gives us marriage. The Chinese are not Americans, and they’re not Catholic. They know what
If you think the Obama health law is only for the uninsured and you won´t be affected, you´re in for a surprise next time you go to the doctor. Be prepared for questions unrelated to why you are seeking medical help — questions that you don´t want to answer. Whether you´re at the dermatologist or the cardiologist, you´ll likely be asked: "Are you sexually active? If so, do you have one partner, multiple partners or same-sex partners?" Doctors are being turned into government agents, where they´re pressured financially to ask questions … and violate their Hippocratic Oath ...
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) hinted that he might be serving his last term in office, admitting that he does not want to become “one of these old guys that should’ve shoved off.” McCain, a 27-year veteran of the Senate and former presidential candidate, made the admission while speaking about his relationship with President Obama. “The president and I, he´s in his last term, I´m probably in mine, the relationship we have had over the past three years is quite good,” McCain told The Wrap in an interview. “Quite good." The 77-year-old´s current term is up in 2016. When asked if this would really
Those skeptical of the degeneration of America’s royal line need look no further than Robert Kennedy Jr. His grandfather bedded Gloria Swanson. His father scored Marilyn Monroe. He mounts any rando who passes by. Like the Spanish Habsburgs or the Royal Tennenbaums, Camelot ain’t what it used to be. The diary of Robert Kennedy Jr., detailed in the New York Post this week, begins by announcing the pregnancy of his wife. By its conclusion, the 2001 journal references 37 women other than its author’s wife with whom he messed around that year. Slightly less than half of the women he physically
A perplexed Ed Schultz on Friday couldn´t fathom why Americans don´t simply "love Obama." the MSNBC anchor highlighted a new poll showing that the President only has a 45 percent approval rating. Schultz marveled, "I just cannot believe this number. Seriously." The confused host sputtered, "It amazes me that people don´t love Obama. It amazes me that the conservatives who are seeing the stock market go through the roof." [MP3 audio here. See video below.] Schultz also took time to trash Ronald Reagan, the man who won 49 states in his 1984 reelection bid. Schultz tried to convince his viewers
The principal of Concord Carlisle High School in Boston issued an apology Wednesday after a Muslim poem was recited over the intercom on the 12th anniversary of 9/11, and the Pledge of Allegiance was not. According to principal Peter Badalament, a “small number” of people were outraged at the poem, which was meant to promote “cross-cultural understanding,” (Skip) Mohja Kahf’s “My Grandmother Washes Her Feet in the Sink of the Bathroom at Sears,” tells a granddaughter’s account of watching her grandmother adhere to the religious Muslim custom of washing her feet five times a day
Republican Rep. Tom Graves and 42 House cosponsors introduced a budget plan Thursday to defund Obamacare without forcing a government shutdown, placing pressure solely on the shoulders of Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Graves’ Security, Stability, and Fairness Resolution is a continuing resolution budget bill that offers a fiscal year 2014 budget that keeps the government open but does not fund Obamacare. The Obama administration has already delayed the law’s employer mandate until 2015, after the 2014 midterm elections. The “Defund Obamacare” campaign spearheaded by Republican Sen. Ted Cruz has repeatedly been accused of seeking a government shutdown if
President Obama´s pitch for a military strike in Syria looked so politically clueless that he left supporters and foes alike scratching their heads: What was he thinking? For some, the answer was obvious. Because every conspiracy theory ever concocted about the President — from him being a secret Muslim agent sent from Kenya to take over the government to gay-sex-and-cocaine binges in the backseats of limousines — all make perfect sense if you simply accept the foundational supposition that Obama hates America. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed on Sunday, Norman Podhoretz argued that Syria showed the swift collapse of
A bill that would allow non-physicians to perform abortions in the first trimester of pregnancy is awaiting signature by Gov. Jerry Brown of California by Sep. 30. The bill, AB 154, passed both houses of the state legislature with strong support from Planned Parenthood and pro-choice groups. Planned Parenthood stands to benefit most directly from the bill, as non-physician staff at its clinics would be able to obtain abortion licenses. One doctor--who identified himself as pro-choice--told Breitbart News that "the bill is a disaster since it sends us back 100 years to the problems of the complications from
Sacramento - California Governor Jerry Brown said on Friday he would sign a bill authorizing the state to provide driver´s licenses to illegal immigrants, a last-minute reversal of his position. Brown said he approved of the measure, which its author had withdrawn on Thursday under the threat of a veto, capping a full day of lobbying by California politicians for immigration reform at the federal level. "This bill will enable millions of people to get to work safely and legally," Brown, a Democrat, said in an email sent to reporters shortly after midnight. "Hopefully it will send a message to
Monster shrimp, some up to the length of a man´s forearm, are invading U.S. waters. Asian tiger shrimp have spread from North Carolina to Texas along the U.S. coast, but no one seems to know how they ended up in the U.S. in the first place. They are originally natives to Indo-Pacific, Asian, and Australian waters. The shrimp may have escaped aquaculture facilities in the U.S. or Caribbean, or maybe even drifted in on ocean currents from the Caribbean or even as far away as west Africa. The shrimp first showed up in 1988, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
As her husband argues for and against war in the same speech on Syria, First Lady Michelle Obama has turned her healthy living initiative in a new direction -- toward drinking water. Not very sexy but it is very simple. She believes that if all Americans, especially children, drank a little more water every day, they would become healthier citizens, now and even at her advanced age of 49. Numerous companies like Brita, Dasani, Arrowhead, Deer Park, Ice Mountain, Zephyrhills, Ozarka and Poland Spring are joining in with logos and promotions to help out the water-drinking campaign for some reason.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D.-Nev.) said at a press conference on Thursday that he likes House Speaker John Boehner (R.-Ohio), but feels sorry for him and asked him at a meeting on Thursday morning what he could do to help him pass a continuing resolution in the Republican-majority House of Representatives that funds the government and that does not defund Obamacare. Reid was speaking with reporters after he and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi had met with Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R.-Ky.).
