Obama to Congress:
Finish the job on gun control

Washington Post, by Philip Rucker

Three months after an elementary school massacre in Connecticut reignited a debate over the nation’s gun laws, President Obama is urging Congress to “join me in finishing the job” by taking swift action on gun-control legislation. Obama, in his weekly radio address released on Saturday, noted the preliminary steps taken in the Senate to advance such measures as universal background checks for all gun buyers and a federal crack-down on gun trafficking. But he chastised Congress for the slow pace of progress, contrasting their indecision with the widespread popular support across the country for strengthening

I think the GOP is missing a huge opportunity here. The majority of the public is in favor of private gun ownership. The GOP should use this to its advantage and write legislation that enhances gun ownership. To wit:

1 One national standard for concealed carry. Anyone who has not been convicted of a felony should be allowed to take a proficiency test and if passed, receive a CCW permit good for anywhere in the country. This would overturn the thousands of CCW restrictions throughout the country.

2. Ban taxation of firearms and ammunition. The government should not be able to tax/fee a fundamental constitutional right.

3. Establish national standards for the use of a firearm in self-defense. Too many states punish victims of criminal violence for simply defending themselves.

But no, the stupid party keeps getting dumber and dumber.

Gun control isn´t that difficult. It primarily involves proper breathing and handling recoil, etc. plus following a few safety rules. I have known them for 66 years now.

#6, iof they only ban taxation of guns and ammunition - that completely removes their argument that they can restrict weapons of any kind through a tax. See the arguments on the 1934 NFA where they made up a bunch of rules and hoops to jump through before buying a machine guns and the 1986 FOPA where they decided to refuse to accept the tax for machine guns manufactured after 1986 - which several circuit courts pointed out meant they had given up the power to control when they gave up the power to tax.

Unemployment has been the prime issue since his election in 2008. When is he going to do ANYTHING that results in economic growth. He killed jobs in the Gulf of Mexico with the drilling moratorium 1 and 2 and the permitorium that followed. He killed thousands of new jobs in doctor owned hospitals because it was clear the Obamacare wouldn´t allow free market reform. He prevent thousands of jobs by sitting on Keystone XL. Now he wants Congress to violate the Constitution for him?

This dummass needs to get the point that Americans are not going to comply with his gun control pipe dreams no matter what congress passes. Our guns are the only thing standing between us and total dictatorship and enough people are ready to die rather than be controlled by idiots so that their children can have better lives. If we had an effective and respectable government, that might not be the case, unfortunately, due to the nature of those with power, that is not possible.

Agree with federalism as a counter argument. But unfortunately, we long ago passed by that concept. There really is no federalism anymore, at least nothing substantial.

You either fight the enemy on his own turf, or the enemy will destroy you. So far the GOP has chosen several decades of destruction.

It´s quite evident for some time that the GOP is more interested in protecting their little fiefdoms than they are in representing the little people. They have become Democrat Lite.

There is too much money and too much power in politics today and protecting that has become paramount over representation.

#17: Although it´s imperfect, I don´t have a big problem with Federalism as intended and ratified by the 13 states.

What I have a very serious problem with is Fascism which in reality is Communism that leaves ownership of businesses in private hands but still exerts control over every aspect of private life and commerce just as classic Communism does.

Keep in mind, the Second Amendment was ratified due to the vivid memories of Concord and Lexington and an arrogant central government.

Those who choose to ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

The Second Amendment is not a matter of life and death. It´s more important than that!

A new report shows that as many as 125,000 young California immigrants may qualify for an expansion of Medi-Cal, the state´s Medicaid program. The Affordable Care Act bars insurance subsidies and enrollment in the Medicaid expansion for undocumented immigrants, but a wrinkle in California rules does offer coverage for those with "deferred action status." Behind the run-up: expectations that the cold weather that´s plagued the Midwest and Northeast and parts of other regions since December will linger, keeping demand high. He waited on the porch, standing beside the American flag that hangs outside the house, and when the 59-year-old music teacher answered he shot her to death in her own hallway. Mitt Romney on Tuesday joined a growing chorus of Republicans urging the Arizona governor to veto a bill that would allow business owners to cite their religious beliefs in refusing service to gay people. The former Massachusetts governor tweeted at Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R), saying it “is right” to veto the bill passed by the state legislature last week. Brewer has not said whether she will sign or veto the measure. However, a number of media outlets have reported people close to her expect her to veto it. Brewer told CNN she would weigh both sides before deciding the right thing to

The attorney for Lois Lerner blasted the House GOP for recalling the former IRS official to testify next week, saying it would only serve to embarrass her and could increase threats against Lerner and her family. Bill Taylor, Lerner’s attorney, told House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) that he told committee staff in January that Lerner would continue to invoke her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination if recalled, and that she would "happily testify" if given immunity. Taylor, of Zuckerman Spaeder, said he heard nothing further from the committee until Issa wrote to him on Tuesday, saying he was hauling Lerner

Biden wants new laws to block “former slave holding states in the south” from discrimination against blacks and other minorities. Biden, speaking at a reception at the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., in celebration of African-American History Month, said that, "These guys never go away. Hatred never, never goes away. "President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder have turned their backs on the values the American people hold dear, values particularly cherished in the black community: values like marriage, which should be strengthened and promoted, rather than weakened and undermined," says
