Rob Portman’s gay marriage epiphany

| You’ve probably heard that Sen. Rob Portman reversed his position on gay marriage, citing the fact that he recently found out his son was gay. Not everyone on the left is celebrating Portman’s epiphany. In fact, some observers are calling it selfish. For example, Jonathan Chait wrote, “By Portman’s own account … he opposed gay marriage until he realized that opposition to gay marriage stands in the way of his own son’s happiness.” It might surprise you to learn that I agree. This has nothing to do with whether or not gay marriage is good or bad policy,
|
Comments: I´m with Lewis. I´m not sure why Portman´s gay son requires a marriage instead of a legally recognized civil union. It´s the marriage part that upsets most of us, not the gay part.

If being married is happiness for gays, then it should be a requirement.

Thank goodness he didn´t discover his son was a pedophile. Portman might have gone on a nationwide tour supporting sex with children.

His son is 21 years old and Portman only found out "recently" that the kid is gay? HOGWASH, the kid didn´t "turn" gay, he´s been gay all of his life and daddy is too stupid or too much of a liar to admit he´s known this since his son was a little boy.

This is really off topic--but, remotely related.
Maybe that´s one of the reasons priests in the Roman Catholic Church are not allowed to get married. Sometimes emotions and family fidelity can get in the way of clear thinking.

This has to be the reason he was not picked for VP - they knew this would come out. A close family member of ours is gay but that does not change how we feel about him but it also does not change our view on gay marriage. Civil unions for the purposes of benefits, hospital visitation, etc. fine but marriage is between a man and woman, as God defined.

Get the government out of rewarding or punishing various relationships, and this issue goes away the very next day.
I have a gay child and their union with their partner has brought about THREE wonderful grandchildren for us. Not in the usual way, of course, but they carry my name, just not my DNA.
Oh, by the way, she´s conservative to the core.
If the government wasn´t involved in playing favorites with people or companies, many other problems like political corruption would go away as well.
If you want "traditional" marriage, read the history books. For much of history, traditional marriage involved polygamy.
Throughout history, gays have made up around 3% of every society, except for Islamic ones where they will likely be beheaded for admitting it.
As my daughter once told me: "Do you think I would have chosen this for my life with all we have to endure? It´s far easier to be straight."

I´m sick of being told that I´m a hater because I don´t agree with gay marriage. It was bad enough when liberals did it. Just because I don´t want gay marriage doesn´t mean I hate gay people. The Republican party is going to lose a lot of social conservative votes over this. Why wouldn´t a social conservative believe that Republicans will cave on abortion next?

Several of them are conservative and are harshly criticized for belonging to a party which turns its´ back on gays (see CPAC).

I think the GOP should think long and hard about assuming all conservatives oppose gay marriage. I think there are many fiscal conservatives who think personal actions - as long as not illegal are not our business. Many know gay people and want them treated kindly. I think the GOP should come up with a platform supporting civil unions or marriage but stating religious organizations who don´t want them don´t have to perform them. Hard core opposition and vitriolic views alienate a big segment. We should be a big tent. This issue plays in the hands of liberals. We need to get pas it and recognize there are many different views on this issue.

After the civil union law passed in Illinois, adoption agencies that declined to evaluate prospective gay foster parents on religious grounds had their contracts terminated by the state. There is also a push for gay marriage in Illinois, despite the civil union law.

Isn´t this the outcome we wish all liberals to experience --where they are "mugged by reality"? Leftists are sure that ObamaCare is "common sense legislation" because they have no experience with running a business and making a payroll. We all know that they would no longer vote for Democrat Party candidates if they knew what we knew. So, now Senator Portman knows what Dick Cheney knows. If your offspring turns out to be homosexual, you want still want them to be free and experience equal rights under the law.
My father was quite happy to have a granddaughter from his gay son. And that granddaughter did share his DNA. It is too bad that the gay son had to emigrate away from a Conservative state to make that happen.

I certainly agree with #13 about this:
Get the government out of rewarding or punishing various relationships, and this issue goes away the very next day.
This is the stance our conservatives should take going into elections. It was solely because democrats purposefully inserted the then-non-issue of birth control at the first debate that cost us the election. Dems played their game well... it was a pure briar patch moment; and those conservatives running for office just kept fumbling the ball, answering questions that were not relevant to that election and should not have been asked.
If our side took that position and stood by it firmly, it would be a totally different ballgame.
#13´s statement is so simple that it could be a game changer.

#22 you are reading WAY too much into my post. I said nothing of the sort. What the heck is Holy Matrimony in the eyes of God? That´s not how they define their relationship.
If someone wants to "marry" their horse, I´m fine with that. It´s simply not the government´s role to play favorites with our tax monies. She believes the same thing.
I don´t care if it´s with banks, car companies, "green" energy, or "marriage".
She and her parner are great, tax-paying citizens raising great kids. They pay their bills, and live quiet, respectful lives. They are loved by their coworkers, neighbors and friends.
If you don´t want to "recognize" their relationship in the eyes of your church, fine, but don´t presume to speak for God. Wife and I are Christian, and we always see a red flag when someone loves to speak for God.

I know of few conservatives who have problems with gay people. I know of lots of liberals that do, though. Ask a black person on the street. But marriage - no. There are tons of practical reasons to oppose, just read Ann Coulter´s column from a couple of years ago. And contrary to what lots of people say - there are a large percentage of gays who are gay by choice (they are not really gay - they just subscribe to the gay life style). Just ask any gay person.

Discovering that a relative of yours (even an immediate relative) doesn´t have the power to make real something that´s not. Relationships between same-sex couples are NOT just like man-woman relationships. So legislating that the two be affirmed as the same is legislating a lie.
Reality doesn´t conform to our desire or our will. Relativism is a form of dementia.

#27--shouldn´t the government want to encourage traditional marriages? We are already in a crisis state as to traditional marriage, with the high divorce rate and having children out of wedlock. The social costs are enormous. Taking away the marital deduction or other benefits would drive the nail in the coffin. The government should to more to encourage (note: I said encourage, not mandate) traditional marriage, not less.

No. 28 says he and his wife are Christians who always see red when someone purports to speak for God.
Guess that doesn´t include them, though, because they seem pretty certain what the Bible says doesn´t count, and who could have told them that except God? (Unless it was some other spirit.)

Persnally, #28, we use Scripture to measure ourselves, and not measure others.
I don´t know what God thinks of my child´s relationship. That between her and Him. He made her. She talks to Him.
I don´t presume to quote Scriptures and then use that to control or demean the lives of others.

Re#28: I certainly would not presume to speak for God. He has spoken for himself quite eloquently on the subject of homosexuality through the Scriptures. If one does not believe in the Christian Bible or believes and does not choose to adhere to what is there, it is no concern of mine. My position on homosexual "marriage" is the same as my position on most issues: the government should not be involved AT ALL. If two(or more) people want to live together and call it being married, I care not a whit. That is between them and God. They will stand before Him by and by. But by insisting that the government establish homosexual "marriage" by statute, it becomes a public issue and like any other public issue I will exercise my first amendment right to voice my opposition.

It is an American tragedy that so many people are being deceived by political correctness into disobeying God’s laws and readily accepting man’s laws that violate God’s laws. Abortion violates the Commandment of “Thou shalt not murder.” Government approval of gay marriage violates the very clear admonitions cited in Old and New Testaments about that lifestyle; Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because they were full of sin. Like nations throughout history that have lost their moral compass, America will reap what it has sown. God’s laws must, and should, prevail over man’s laws.

#13 your daughter and her fellow stealer of other women´s babies can play whatever name games they want, they will. never. be. married.
You know why?
Because they aren´t STRAIGHT.
MARRIAGE is between a MAN and WOMAN...it is a BRIDGE, something that spans the gap between two genders, that creates a connection that no homosexual will EVER comprehend. EVER. What can they build if they are on the same side of the river?! Homosexuals will NEVER ´get´ the bond between a man and woman that is created in marriage because there will NEVER be that bridge.
But you know if it makes them and others FEEL GOOD to play word games, go ahead. Create lies. Everyone knows and thinks it anyway: gays will NEVER be MARRIED.

I like the idea of coming up with a simple statement to neutralize this issue - like what # 27 said. We can agree to disagree but as long as gays are law abiding and pay their taxes - if marriage is important to them then why not? I think they just want acceptance to live their lives and not be thought of as perverts when they didn´t choose it. Maybe once they discover the marriage penalty in the tax code they´ll help get rid of it. - Or pay more taxes with the rest of us. We have bigger issues and the media will use this issue to distract from them.

Regarding hated terms, #43 -- Why are we not allowed by our elitist re-creators to disagree with the norming of homosexuality or to dislike the efforts to prioritize their feelings over reality and truth in the law, without being dismissed as simply being AFRAID of them or HATING them?
Nobody has the right or authority to tell me what I believe or what I´ve said. And those who presume to do that are essentially trying to provoke a physical altercation.

Human history (not to mention current events!) is too chock-full of examples of nefarious regimes violently abusing and controlling their people, and the freedoms enjoyed by American citizens are the exception, not the rule. Andrew Breitbart has become an iconic and beloved figure on the right, so it’s hard to imagine his eponymous empire could be in danger of losing conservative support just one year after his passing. But if recent events are a harbinger of things to come, that’s at least a possibility. It all started last October, when BuzzFeed’s McKay Coppins penned a controversial piece, arguing the outlet was “plagued by an unusual degree of disorganization and rampant infighting…” The report might have been easily dismissed, had it not been soon revealed that Breitbart.com’s Dana Loesch was suing Breitbart.com

And now the last of them is gone. Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, and Pope John Paul II—three who won the Cold War and, it isn´t too much to say, saved the West (at least for a while!)—are no longer with us. Their examples remain. They knew what they believed but also knew they had to justify their beliefs, and that one could adjust prudently to circumstances without yielding on principle. They stood firm when in power, and they took risks to get there, challenging the conventional wisdom and the respective establishments of their nations or institutions.

Frustration is taking its toll in the liberals’ war against guns. President Obama, pushing his broad gun control agenda, said we should be ashamed if we’ve forgotten the Newtown shooting so soon. The New York Times opined that Obama is being shouted down by the “gun lobby,” even though he and Biden had been crisscrossing the country “…making a forceful case for a package of laws that would reduce gun violence.” That, of course, is the media narrative on gun control. For every issue there is a narrative: a set of assumptions and boundaries of thought

Mr. Samson has found what he says are perfect replicas of the French general´s gray overcoat, he has studied Napoleon´s native Corsican tongue and he has had himself crowned emperor of France, in a cathedral yet. In 2015, he wants to lead thousands of military enthusiasts into the ultimate re-enactment: the 200th anniversary of the battle of Waterloo in Belgium. But an American rival stands in his way. Is it time to give up the fight against Obamacare? That’s a question some conservative health-care experts, pundits, and — more quietly — politicians are asking. In the first years after its passage, opponents had hoped that the Supreme Court would strike down the law or that a new president would sign its repeal before most of it took effect. But the Supreme Court decided to modify a few of its provisions instead of striking it down, and President Obama was reelected. Repeal is almost certainly off the table for four years. Obamacare will continue to be implemented.

As the bipartisan Gang of Eight works to complete a comprehensive immigration reform bill, there has been a growing consensus among Senate Republicans that the bill — so far seen by no one outside the Gang — should be the subject of multiple hearings and extended consideration inside the Senate Judiciary Committee. But on Sunday there were signs that consensus does not extend to the Republicans inside the Gang. Appearing on CBS, longtime immigration reform advocate and Gang member Sen. John McCain suggested the immigration issue is so familiar to lawmakers that multiple hearings will not be necessary.

The White House press corps should ask President Obama this question: You’ve told Iran’s leaders that if they come close to marrying a nuclear warhead with a missile that can hit the United States or our allies, they should expect a U.S. military attack on their soil. (Snip)Administration officials would never admit it, but the main reason for their being tougher on Iran than North Korea seems tied to American domestic politics as much or more than anything else, specifically the standing of Israel and oil versus Korea and Japan.

AS a Texas-raised journalist, I can tell you two things with confidence about my native state. One, its economy has been humming nicely for years. Two, this appears to greatly offend a certain breed of Northern writer, several of whom have descended on the state in an attempt to rebut stories of a “Texas miracle.” (Snip) “Texas has a long tradition of looking outside the government for support — and often finding it. That predates the Texas revolution and was reinforced by the rise of the cattle kingdom and the oil booms.”

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

The murder trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell largely is being ignored by the mainstream media, even in the face of grisly testimony, such as what we heard yesterday. Life News reports: ...a former employee described how she heard a baby scream during a live-birth abortion. Abortion clinic employee Sherry West described an incident which "really freaked (her) out" and related to the jury how she heard a child who was born alive following an abortion scream.

North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass. The report cited United Kingdom diplomats, saying Pyongyang was demanding the U.S. president personally call Kim Jong-un as one of the conditions to relieve the current conflict at hand. Itar-Tass also quoted the U.K.’s Sky News as saying North Korea currently has eight nuclear warheads.

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

Chelsea Clinton has raised her profile in the last few days, which sparked the inevitable question about the former first daughter´s future: Will she ever be like Mom and Dad and run for office? Clinton, 33, essentially said "maybe" in an interview that aired Monday on NBC´s Today show. "Right now I´m grateful to live in a city, a state and a country where I strongly support my mayor, my governor, my president and my senators and my representative," said Clinton, whose father, Bill, was president from 1993-2001 and her mother, Hillary

More than 700 Special Operations veterans are urging members of Congress to back a select committee to investigate last year’s Benghazi terrorist attack, according to a letter first obtained by Fox News. The letter from the group, “Special Operations Speaks,” supports the appointment of a special committee tasked with the single mission of investigating the attack that left Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead, and shut down the CIA operation in an annex of the Benghazi consulate, in the Sept. 11, 2012 attack. “Congress must show some leadership and provide answers to the public

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

Amid all of the very real threats of war and stuff from North Korea, you´d think American intelligence officers want as much video footage of the enemy as possible. Well, here is one video featuring North Korean exercises and Kim Jong-Un holding a gun, and we´ll say this: they certainly get points for presentation. Remember the clap-happy report from Dennis Rodman´s diplomatic basketball vacation? This video comes courtesy of the same Youtube channel that gave us that Rodman video. The case of a same-sex Connecticut couple accused of repeatedly raping and abusing two of their nine adopted boys is headed for trial. Married couple George Harasz and Douglas Wirth of Glastonbury were supposed to be sentenced Friday in Hartford Superior Court under a plea deal, but instead withdrew from their agreement with prosecutors. The men had already pleaded no contest in January to one felony count each of risk of injury to a minor — a reduction from even more serious charges related to sexual assault....
