Female kicker´s NFL tryout
lasts only two kicks

Lauren Silberman´s NFL tryout has lasted all of two kicks, neither of which travelled 20 yards. Silberman is the first woman to compete at an NFL regional scouting combine. She is 28 years old and played club soccer at Wisconsin. She left the New York Jets´ practice field after injuring her quadriceps. She tried two kickoffs, the first going 19 yards and the second about 13 yards. She then asked to see a trainer. As more than two dozen media, including E! Entertainment network, watched her every move, Silberman was examined by a trainer. About 30 minutes later,

another site had a photo of her, kicking. Her form was awful. She is clueless about placekicking.
(for a right footed kicker, one goes back three steps, and about three steps to the left. And when the left foot is placed down by the ball, it has to be about 12 inches to the left of the ball. She had her approach almost straigh on, and her left foot wound up right next to the ball. It is a wonder she didn´t kick herself.)

This is so unfair.

Just because men are big and strong - - that doesn´t mean they should get all those big-paying NFL jobs. Women must unite - - and demand that 51% of NFL playing jobs be set aside - - because after all they are 51% of the population.

Fifty-yard field goals - - fifty-five yard field goals. Hell - - let´s bring back the ten-yard field goal - - and give everyone a fair shot!

Re #28: If a prospective NFL kicker is that bad, she (or he, if a man were that delusional) should be insulted and demeaned, for wasting credulous sportscasters´ time, if for nothing else.

Incidentally, some of us were hoping that Danica Patrick would win the Daytona 500. She is capable of winning as a racer, and in fact has won in Indy Cars. If she had won at Daytona it would have been a sponsor´s--and NASCAR´s--dream. Money would flood into the sport, and some of it would be mine. I still hope she will drive into NASCAR´s Victory Lane before the year is out.)

But a person who can´t kick a football twenty frigging yards in the air, and who seeks nationwide coverage of her tryout, deserves the maximum disapprobation. It´s like a pencil-armed Olive Oyl type trying out for the Olympic men´s weightlifting squad. Maybe Ms. Silberman´s failure will stop any other unworthy pretenders who forget their sex.

Over and out.

Ultimately all football players get hit and hit hard. Therefore, even if in the very unlikely case that a woman had the talent to kick even at the college level, a full speed hit by 250 pound savage would likely take her off the field on a stretcher. Sure there are few exceptions like the beefy field event Olympic competitors, but those body types are not built for place kicking.

Separately, longtime Berlusconi loyalist Sandro Bondi said Italy risks "civil war" if the 76-year-old media mogul isn´t spared punishment.
