The House Republican leadership has scheduled a floor vote on Thursday on a Senate version of the Violence Against Women Act that, if enacted, would strip constitutional rights from Americans prosecuted by Indian tribes for alleged acts of domestic violence. The bill was sponsored by Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, and opposed by the conservative bloc in the Republican Senate Conference--as well as by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Senate conservatives Ted Cruz of Texas, Mike Lee
Comments: What on earth is wrong with these people?? Why would they do something like this? I´m really starting to wonder about Eric Cantor. With all the critical issues we are facing right now this sure doesn´t seem like the appropriate time to do something like this.
The rights guaranteed by the Constitution are under enough attacks. This makes the problem worse. Once a person is stripped of US citizenship they may be beyond the legal Pale of protections and may be dealt with in any way by "the authorities". I have recently read that there is at least one secret British Court which strips British citizens of their citizenship, after which some have been murdered in drone attacks. Declaring a person to be a non-citizens makes them "stateless persons" so they can be disposed of at will.
Makes no sense at all. You can´t repeal the Constitution or protections under the Constitution with an act of the legislature - you have to amend the Constitution. And there´s nothing in the Constitution that allows us to take away constitutional protections for trial by tribes. They can´t deny due process any more than they could say the First Amendment doesn´t apply on an Indian reservation. This is silly and stupid.
I´d say this will never stand once it gets to SCOTUS, but John Roberts destroyed my faith in their doing anything right ever again. Where on earth did this travesty of a bill originate? And why? Seriously?!?!? A NON-Native American could be prosecuted and found guilty and have no access to Constitutional rights?!?!? What in HADES are these morons (the GOP) thinking?!?!?
Allow me to offer an example that shows the problem. If you are driving on the NYS thruway between the Pa border and Buffalo, you will see signs claiming that you are in native american territory, under the jurisdiction of the tribe. And let´s say you exit the thruway, and go into an indian gas station, and are accused of some sort of violence against the clerk at that gas station. You would be under the jurisdiction of the local indians.
#9, that´s not true. Although I don´t think it´s a very good bill, it only applies to "domestic violence", so you are only going to get tried for beating up the convenience store clerk if you move in with her.
Lesson to the wise: stay away from the Res and leave dem red wimmin´s alone.
It`s going to pass #3. Once again the GOP acts in the best interest of the federal bureaucracy. We are screwed as a nation. It is truly over. Before these jokers are finished with us, we will have no rights at all.
Next up, strip gun right, then pass global warming. In 2014 the dems will push raising the minimum wage yet again just in time for the 2014 midterm election, thus putting the GOP in a political position of `harming women and children` by not increasing the minimum wage.
second post apologies, but, #10, domestic violence would be defined by the tribe, since they have jurisdiction. And the same thing could happen at one of those indian casinos in nys, which are allowed to operate because they are located on indian territory. And if you drive I 81 south of syracuse, ny, you will see exit signs for the onondaga nation! Same deal.
Levin talked about this in detail this week. This legislation would elevate bad language to the level of an assault. And once convicted, you cannot own firearms any longer. Oh, and it allows foreigners to claim a need for asylum. There´s nothing good about this bill, and they wrap it up in a fake name as a way to bully people into voting for it. Politics is the filthiest business in world, and politicians the biggest whores and pimps.
In a rare diplomatic snub, President Obama is canceling plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow next month. The decision reflects both U.S. anger over Russia´s harboring of National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden and growing frustration within the Obama administration over what it sees as Moscow´s stubbornness on other key issues, including missile defense and human rights. Obama will still attend the Group of 20 economic summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, but a top White House official said the president had no plans to hold one-on-one talks with Putin while there.
Joe Scarborough went with a more casual summer look than usual during his appearance with Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski on The View Tuesday morning, rocking some pink pants that caught everyone’s eye. He retold the story of how she told him he looked “a little gay” before going on set, a suggestion that the Republican pundit didn’t seem to mind. “You look great,” Barbara Walters began, speaking to Brzezinski. She then turned to Scarborough and said, “The pink pants? You are a number.” Describing his morning spent walking around the “progressive”
The man on the voicemail is flirty and clearly asking for a date. But it´s the name on the message that´s raising red flags. "Hi, it´s your newly favorite congressman, Bob Filner. You know, the one who fell in love with you at your last speech," he told Eldonna Fernandez. He also asked her out to dinner in the message. "I don´t want to wait ´til you come back to have dinner with you," he said. That message was left a year ago, while Filner was serving his 10th term as a U.S. congressman.
Comedian Jay Leno may be a multimillionaire, but he thanked President Obama during an appearance on his show Tuesday night for helping him get health care for his shop employees. “The guys who worked at my shop for me are all over 50. They never had health care,” Leno explained. “And I was able to get it now because you can’t be turned down. So thank you for that.” “You can’t be turned down because of a preexisting condition,” Obama said proudly as the crowd applauded. “That’s part of what we’re going to be doing.”
With all of Hollywood prepared to bow down to the First Lady of Daytime Talk for her role in Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Oprah is taking the opportunity to push forward her favorite narrative: America remains a deeply racist place. In an interview with The Grio, Oprah, who plays a butler’s wife in the White House in The Butler, says that Trayvon Martin, the black teenager shot by George Zimmerman, is just like 1955 murder victim Emmitt Till: “Let me just tell you, in my mind, same thing. But you can [get] stuck in that and not
A Department of Health and Human Services official told the House Ways and Means Committee that immigrants living in the United States on temporary visas are eligible for federally subsidized health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, “depending on their income.” “It was my understanding it was just going to be those that are citizens of the United States or here as permanent legal residents,” Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Jim Gerlach said at a Thursday hearing on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. “Are there folks beyond that that are eligible for tax credit –
The Obama administration is falling into a state of passivity on national security because it cannot bring itself to fully admit that the war against al-Qaeda is a war. The president’s subordinates, according to a Washington Post story today, say that they would like to bring the al-Qaeda prisoners held at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan back to the U.S. for trial. This is a terrible idea that should have been permanently squashed by congressional rejection of Attorney General Eric Holder’s plan to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in downtown New York City
Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is facing harsh criticism from some Tea Partiers after his Tuesday evening remarks denouncing those who want to fight to defund Obamacare in the upcoming continuing resolution (CR) that funds government operations. Speaking to a New Hampshire GOP fundraised, the failed 2012 GOP candidate said he opposes Obamacare but shunned efforts by conservatives to try to defund it. “I badly want ObamaCare to go away, and stripping it of funds has appeal,” Romney said at the GOP fundraiser, according to The Hill. “But we need to exercise great care about any talk
Newly uncovered video shows Lois Lerner discussing the political pressure that swirled around the IRS in 2010. Lerner says "everyone" was "screaming at" the IRS to stop the flood of money pouring into the 2010 elections through 501(c)(4) groups as a result of Citizens United. Lerner spoke to a small group at Duke´s Sanford School of Public Policy on October 19, 2010, just two weeks before the wave election that brought the Tea Party and Republicans significant gains in Congress. During her appearance Lerner was asked about the flow of money from corporations to 501(c)(4) groups.
At an AARP-Univision mayoral forum this morning, mayoral contender Anthony Weiner pulled out the age card to taunt his most vocal challengers, 69-year-old Doe Fund founder George McDonald. Weiner is 48. Before the debate, Weiner put a hand on McDonald´s back and said hello, prompting McDonald to reply: "I would appreciate if you would never touch me again." Weiner retorted: "What are you going to do about it, grandpa?" according to two sources. The feud between the two has been simmering since last week. At a debate in Laurelton, Queens on Thursday, McDonald called Weiner a "self-pleasuring freak." He said he was
Just days after Yemen´s president visited the White House, his government and the U.S. are at odds over the U.S. decision to pull most diplomatic personnel from the Arab country amidst fears of an impending terrorist attack. Yemen´s embassy in Washington said Tuesday that the move is counterproductive and advances the goals of militant groups. "While the government of Yemen appreciates foreign governments´ concern for the safety of their citizens, the evacuation of embassy staff serves the interests of the extremists and
SAN DIEGO - Mayor Bob Filner sought a personal relationship from a San Diego nurse who asked him to help an injured Marine ensnarled in Veterans Administration red tape, lawyer Gloria Allred said Tuesday. The licensed vocation nurse, Michelle Tyler, became the 11th woman to publicly accuse Filner of unwanted sexual advances. One, former mayoral Communications Director Irene McCormack Jackson, has retained Allred and filed a lawsuit against Filner and the city. The latest alleged advances took place in the mayor´s office on June 11, about one month before Filner was first accused of sexual harassment
He thought he was a woman trapped in a man’s body — but it turns out he’s “just another boring straight guy.” ABC News editor Don Ennis strolled into the newsroom in May wearing a little black dress and an auburn wig and announced he was transgender and splitting from his wife. He wanted to be called Dawn. But now he says he suffered from a two-day bout of amnesia that has made him realize he wants to live his life again as Don. “I accused my wife of playing some kind of cruel joke, dressing
The truth about Benghazi, the Associated Press/James Rosen monitoring, the IRS corruption, the NSA octopus, and Fast and Furious is still not exactly known. Almost a year after the attacks on our Benghazi facilities, we are only now learning details of CIA gun-running, military stand-down orders, aliases of those involved who are still hard to locate, massaged talking points, and the weird jailing of Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. We still do not quite know why Eric Holder’s Justice Department went after the Associated Press or Fox News’s James Rosen — given that members of the administration were themselves illegally leaking
WASHINGTON — Former Massachusetts lawmaker Barney Frank revealed that he doesn’t believe in God. During Friday’s appearance on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” Frank, who championed the decriminalization of pot while serving in the House of Representatives, admitted to smoking marijuana and being an atheist. “You were in a fairly safe district. You were not one of those congress people who would have to worry about every little thing,” Maher said to Frank. “You could come on this show and sit next to a pot-smoking atheist and it wouldn’t bother you.”
Washington--As hundreds of commuters emerged from Amtrak and commuter trains at Union Station on a recent morning, an armed squad of men and women dressed in bulletproof vests made their way through the crowds. The squad was not with the Washington police department or Amtrak’s police force, but was one of the Transportation Security Administration’s Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response squads — VIPR teams for short — assigned to perform random security sweeps to prevent terrorist attacks at transportation hubs across the United States.(Snip)With little fanfare, the agency best known for airport screenings has vastly expanded its reach
A poll released Friday by Public Policy Polling found that Alaska voters would pick former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over the state´s former Republican governor, Sarah Palin, if the two women were to face off in the 2016 presidential election. Clinton led with 49 percent in the hypothetical match-up, with Palin at 40 percent, a nine-point gap. As of July 3, Republicans comprised 27 percent of the state´s registered voters and Democrats made up just 14 percent. The last time Alaskans opted for the Democrats´ presidential candidate was in 1964. Clinton trails five other hypothetical GOP candidates –
In an interview for The Guardian Weekend magazine, actor Matt Damon recently weighed in with his thoughts on how President Barack Obama has handled the scandals that have engulfed his administration since the spring. Damon, a vocal supporter of the president since his 2008 campaign for national office, said that Obama is overcompensating for his lack of military background with his tough response to controversies like how the government is responding to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. The actor said that Obama is allowing himself to “get bullied” and is acting as though is “manhood”
WASHINGTON — U.S. officials insisted Tuesday that extraordinary security measures for nearly two dozen diplomatic posts were to thwart an “immediate, specific threat,” a claim questioned by counterterrorism experts, who note that the alert covers an incongruous set of nations from the Middle East to an island off the southern coast of Africa. Analysts don’t dispute the Obama administration’s narrative that it’s gleaned intelligence on a plot involving al Qaida’s most active affiliate, the Yemen-based Arabian Peninsula branch. That would explain why most U.S. posts in the Persian Gulf are on lockdown, including the U.
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus threatened to pull the group’s partnership with NBC and CNN for 2016 GOP presidential primary debates if the networks moved ahead with plans to air films on Hillary Clinton. “If they have not agreed to pull this programming prior to the start of the RNC’s Summer Meeting on August 14, I will seek a binding vote stating that the RNC will neither partner with these networks in 2016 primary debates nor sanction primary debates they sponsor,” Preibus said in a statement. In individual letters to CNN President Jeff Zucker and NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt,
The Pentagon has placed its elite cadre of special operations teams on full alert to launch preemptive attacks against suspected al Qaeda targets across the globe, according to reports. The American special forces teams have spent the past week waiting for U.S. military and intelligence officials to confirm the whereabouts of the terror cell plotting to attack U.S. diplomatic outposts in the Mideast and North Africa. Unnamed sources told CNN on Monday that the teams were poised to carry out the preemptive strikes, but declined to comment on where the U.S. forces were located or which potential
Oprah Winfrey on Monday said the killings of Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till are the "same thing." This transpired during an interview with The Grio that aired on NBC´s Today show. OPRAH WINFREY: It´s so easy during this time: Trayvon Martin, Trayvon Martin parallel to Emmett Till, let me just tell you. In my mind, same thing. But you can, you can get stuck in that and not allow yourself to move forward and to see how far we´ve come. Really? Martin and Till are the same thing?
In an exclusive interview for The Grio, NBCUniversal’s African-American news and opinion website, Oprah Winfrey weighed in with her unvarnished thoughts on the killing of Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of George Zimmerman. Winfrey said that, in her mind, Martin’s murder and that of Emmett Till in 1955 – whose killers were also acquitted – were the “same thing.” However, she added that it is important to keep in mind how much race relations in America have progressed over the last half-century. In a clip of the interview which aired on NBC’s Today, Oprah told The Grio’s Chris
Two Republican senators said Tuesday that they´ve personally urged the Egyptian government to release Muslim Brotherhood prisoners, after hosting meetings with top officials in Cairo as part of an Obama administration-sanctioned visit. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who is in Cairo along with Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-.S.C., made clear that the two U.S. lawmakers are representing the views of Congress and "do not speak for the White House." Still, they are among the most prominent U.S. representatives in the country this week, as a wave of international mediators tries to nudge the country´s military-backed government to resolve the standoff
