Putting Sequesteria
in Perspective

RUSH: Sequesteria. We are in the midst of sequesteria. We´re counting down the days to the disaster, zero hour. It is this Friday. Everybody is trying to think of ways to put the amount of money we´re talking about here into some sort of understandable context. Even if you say that we have $3,700 billion every year that we spend, i.e., $3.7 trillion, okay, we got $3,700 billion, and we´re gonna cut $25 billion. It´s like, okay, I got $3,700 and I´m not gonna spend a quarter.

$3,700 to $25, is $37 to 25 cents.

Actually it´s $85 Billion, or just under 2-1/2%.

Seems big numbers confused most people.

Michelle Obama’s “cultural exchange” trip to China has been carried out with a degree of secrecy that would have made Qin Shi Huang proud; but reporters granted access by the White House to “cover” the trip claim that it is the Chinese government who is shoving them around. Presumably, under a “free press,” American reporters would be free to get an unofficial (read: potentially embarrassing) photo of the First Lady mayhaps furrowing an eyebrow at insufficiently polite wait-staff or learning the correct way to wield chopsticks at a bowl of lobster chow mein. On the other hand, the Chinese state security surrounding

It is likely to be another three months before the U.S. Supreme Court decides whether the government is obliged to grant a religious exemption from ObamaCare´s birth-control mandate to companies whose owners object to it on religious grounds. Tomorrow the justices hear oral arguments in the two cases that raise that question, Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores and Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp. v. Sebelius. But already some on the left think they´ve caught Justice Antonin Scalia in a contradiction. They haven´t. TalkingPointsMemo´s Sahil Kapur asserts (using the "few observers doubt" evasion) that "Scalia´s sympathies will be the Christian business owners who

First lady Michelle Obama´s Spring Break trip to China with her daughters and mom has received some glowing news reports, but not because her press corps has had an easy time covering the event-filled trip. Reporters say that they have been blocked from events, screamed at by officials, held back with red tape and told not to move from prepositioned lookouts, possibly to avoid taking embarrassing photos. On Monday, the New York Times filed a pool report about the first lady’s tour of Xi’an, a city dating to the 14th century. “Event below marred for press by obnoxious Chinese advance man screaming

Malaysian authorities are assuming beyond a reasonable doubt that the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has been lost in the Southern Indian Ocean. NBC News reports that Malaysia Airlines sent a text message to the relatives of the 239 people who were on board the plane saying "we have to assume beyond any reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and that none of those on board have survived. ... We must not accept all evidence suggests the plane went down in the Southern Indian Ocean." Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak announced the new developments at a press conference on Monday. KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak says a new analysis of satellite data shows that the missing Malaysia Airlines plane plunged into the southern Indian Ocean. If confirmed, the news would be a major breakthrough in the unprecedented two-week struggle to find out what happened to Flight 370, which disappeared shortly after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew aboard. This is a developing story. The previous story is below: PERTH, Australia — Ships rushed to the location of floating objects spotted Monday by Australian and Chinese planes in the southern Indian Ocean close to where

MSNBC has made no secret of its sincere disdain for conservatives in any form: Republicans, the Tea Party, the Right, for starters. Obviously. These are terribly unserious people, gripped with a “hate” for President Obama, as the above SuperCut shows. MSNBC’s entire primetime lineup is stacked with liberal journalists and pundits, who in turn have on more liberal journalists, pundits, and Democratic lawmakers as their guests more than 90 percent of the time. The subject matter, as anyone who watches MSNBC knows, is nearly always to gleefully and freely shred Republicans. One common point of contention: Daring to oppose the commander

In the minds of progs, global warming is the devil incarnate, responsible for everything bad. So naturally, with the world focused on the mystery of Malaysia 370, it is time to blame global warming. Mother Jones Magazine took a break from blaming free markets (maybe because Malaysia Airlines is government-owned) to blame global warming for the inability to find the debris. Scientists say man-made climate change has fundamentally altered the currents of the vast, deep oceans where investigators are currently scouring for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight, setting a complex stage for the ongoing search for MH370. MICHELLE OBAMA: That´s why it´s so important for information and ideas to flow freely over the internet and through the media, because that´s how we discover the truth. That´s how we learn what´s really happening in our communities in our country and our world. And that´s how we decide which values and ideas we think are best--by questioning and debating them vigorously--by listening to all sides of an argument and by judging for ourselves. My husband and I are on the receiving end of plenty of questioning and criticism from our media and our fellow citizens and its not always easy,

Climate scientists and environmentalists are venting their frustrations debating those who are skeptical of man-made global warming — and some have even gone so far as to refuse debating skeptics. Dan Weiss, the director of climate strategy at the liberal Center for American Progress, refused to appear on Fox Business to debate climate skeptic Marc Morano last week. Morano runs the blog Climate Depot, where he reports on environment and climate news. Weiss was set to debate Morano on the show “The Independents” but “refused to debate directly with Morano, and chided [the show] for airing his views,” according to the Fox

A prominent Russian politician has proposed dividing Ukraine along the lines of an infamous Nazi-Soviet pact and suggested that regions in Western Ukraine hold referendums on breaking away from Kiev. In a letter sent to the governments of Poland, Romania and Hungary, Vladimir Zhirinovsky also suggested those countries hold referendums on incorporating the regions into their territory. Zhirinovsky, whose nationalist Liberal Democratic party largely backs President Vladimir Putin in the Russian parliament, sent the letter as Russia annexed the Crimea region of southern Ukraine last week. He is deputy speaker at the Duma and his party holds a minority in the parliament. But

The bodies of thousands of aborted and miscarried babies were incinerated as clinical waste, with some even used to heat hospitals, an investigation has found. Ten NHS trusts have admitted burning foetal remains alongside other rubbish while two others used the bodies in ‘waste-to-energy’ plants which generate power for heat. Last night the Department of Health issued an instant ban on the practice which health minister Dr Dan Poulter branded ‘totally unacceptable.’ At least 15,500 foetal remains were incinerated by 27 NHS trusts over the last two years alone, Channel 4’s Dispatches discovered. The programme, which will air tonight, found that parents who lose

The White House has been tight-lipped about the cost of First Lady Michelle Obama´s trip to China, but based on the choice for lodging, it could be considerable. Mrs. Obama and her entourage, which numbers seventy according to the Washington Times (including her two daughters and her mother), booked the Westin Chaoyang Hotel close to the U.S. embassy in Beijing for their first stop. According to USA Today, the presidential suite at the hotel is listed as $8,400 per night. WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney said Sunday that President Barack Obama is naive when it comes to Russia, has shown "faulty judgment" about Moscow´s intentions and could have done more to try to deter its annexation of Crimea. The 2012 Republican presidential nominee said Obama didn´t have the foresight to anticipate Russia´s moves and should have been working earlier with allies to make clear the penalties that Russia would face if it moved into Ukraine. Romney did acknowledge that such steps may not have been enough though to hold back Russia President Vladimir Putin. "Had we communicated those things, there´s always

First lady Michelle Obama told students that freedom of speech should be a universal right during her extravagant, no-press-allowed tour of China — a hypocritical move that will surely draw the ire of critics, according to an expert. “That is troublesome. That goes beyond hypocritical, and I think the American media and the international media has every right to call her and the Obama administration on that — that they permitted that to happen,” said Tom Whalen, a political history professor at Boston University. “It makes you shake your head, albeit sadly.” The first lady stopped at Peking University in Beijing yesterday

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the sweeping acceptance of gay marriage in recent years is owed in large part to Christianity. Rejecting the rigidly hierarchical and stratified societies of the ancient world, Jesus Christ taught the equal dignity of all persons, proclaimed that the meek shall inherit the earth, and declared that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The Western world has been working out the logic of these subversive teachings ever since, with the institutional transformation of marriage being the latest, though surely not the last, example of its social, moral,

In a constituent meeting gone awry that was captured on shaky, amateur video, embattled Rep. You don´t have any damn facts!” Ellmers exploded at one of the activists when he said that employers – who often claim a labor shortage to argue for amnesty – frequently don´t post job openings in that region.
