Dinner celebrates life of Trayvon Martin
Miami Herald [FL], by Janey Tate

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 2/24/2013 6:08:20 PM

The parents of Trayvon Martin entered the room to a standing ovation. The waves of applause marked the bittersweet beginning of the inaugural "We Remember Trayvon" dinner, held in honor of the 17-year-old who was killed last Feb. 26. The Feb. 10 event was a fundraiser for the Justice for Trayvon Martin Foundation, launched by his parents. (Snip) This unwanted job began a year ago when Fulton’s son was shot in the chest by George Zimmerman, a Sanford neighborhood watch member. Trayvon was visiting his father, Tracy Martin, who lived in the townhouse community with his girlfriend.

And the public STILL does not know what really happened. How long will it take? Years? Decades? What is taking so long?

The same incredible sloth is encountered in every high profile, socially and politically explosive case, from Gabby Giffords to Newtown. The delays are inexcusable and profoundly damaging. They permit "burn in" of every conceivable narrative. When the facts finally emerge -assuming they ever do- it is too late. False narratives have done their work. They are permanently encoded in the public DNA, to be transmitted forever, hardened and impervious to correction.

The slowness of the justice system in the 21st century digital age is neither necessary nor acceptable. There is no need for these unconscionable, business-as-usual, snail´s pace bureaucratic, legalistic delays in cases of obvious national significance. Some means must be devised to expedite the public dissemination of verified information, instead of deliberately keeping it concealed for months or even years pending trial. There should certainly be a way of doing this that preserves the rights of the accused -if they are still alive. Depriving the public of the facts, while sensationalizing and politicizing the story 24/7 for weeks and months on end, is toxic and damaging to the social fabric and can lead to unhealthy political reactions.

Hence the adage, ´Racism $ells´. Ask MSNBC.

We all knew we were in bizarro world when the Democrats almost ran Sharpton for president. Maybe Trayvon´s parents are next?

It must be the German sounding last name of Zimmerman. If he was a Hernandez or a Gonzalez I just don´t think it would have become the cause celeb / outrage du jur that we now have.

Why is this type of behavior only racist if white people were to try it ???

What a shame Zimmerman had a gun. Otherwise Trayvon would´ve cracked that cracker´s head open like a walnut. And Trayvon would still be here - - to walk among us and inspire us all.

And, oh yeah - - to bust into a few more condos, fence the swag he grabbed, and buy himself an even bigger gold grill.

Clothes that they never would have had if not for the death of their son and their cashing in on it? Next will come the book no one will read about a kid no one knew. Enough already.

Why don´t they show the actual picture of what he looked like when it happened? Zimmerman will never get a fair trial with all these race baitors running the show. This family is very angry they don´t have anybody to sue fo rwrongful death so this dinner is a way to weasel money out of sympathizers.Who´s in charge of the foundation and what are it´s goals?

Not one person has ever asked why this neighborhood needed a watch captain to begin with. There had to be a history of break ins,car theft or something. If Tray was simply going to a 7-11 for a bag of Skittles, why did he lurk and parade around this neighborhood. Didn´t he have breaking and entering tools in his locker?

The prosecutor has already sent out warnings to not attack the victim and are blocking his juvenile records from Zimmerman´s defense team.

The other lie the media started was this was a white neighborhood when it´s been proven since,it´s a racially balanced one.NBC edited the 911 calls to frame Zimmerman in the public´s mind and they should have to pay millions in damages.

Two weeks ago, I was invited to testify before the Senate Finance Committee on the subject of the economic problems of the middle class. (Snip) Congressional hearings are not the place for truth to emerge, or even for a sustained inquiry into the truth. They are performances, and each actor already has his or her lines memorized—especially the senators, whose questions direct the flow of discussion, and who rarely seem interested in building on or digging deeper into what has gone before. By the end of this hearing, there was no question which character’s voice dominated: it was Lindsey’s, perhaps because he was more familiar with the workings

Belgium´s papers are indignant and confused over a New York magazine post that called their giant Obama-plays-basketball cookie and racist Obama-as-monkey cartoon racist. "According to New York Magazine the edible artwork is outright racist," writes Het Nieuwsblad, a daily paper. "The commentary seems a bit exaggerated, but the website is convinced: Belgians are racists." Niewsblad goes on to argue that the Obama-monkey cartoon was "taken out of context" and the cookie "seemed like a nice gift for the U.S. Embassy," but was taken the wrong way. This is not an opinion column, but a sign that Belgian diversity is weak.

A major development occurred today in the scandal surrounding the Washington Post’s attempt to advance Democratic Party talking points by falsely linking Koch Industries to the Keystone Pipeline. He wasn’t lying, but for a guy who had been working for Republicans and conservative organizations for the better part of 16 years, telling his mom and dad about representing Big Pot wasn’t exactly high on his list. As the U.S. Secret Service arrived in the Netherlands last weekend for a presidential trip, managers were already on high alert to avoid any further embarrassing incidents involving agents. The agency’s director had admonished supervisors after two counter-sniper officers suspected of drinking were involved in a March 7 car accident during a presidential visit to Miami, according to several people with knowledge of the incident. The driver passed a field sobriety test and was not arrested. So in Amsterdam on Saturday night, Secret Service supervisor George Hartford had the Miami incident in mind when he issued a warning

But, modern politics is all about narratives and storylines. It doesn’t appear that the Democratic leader violated any FEC rules, because his daughter’s company was technically a campaign vendor. Three Secret Service agents responsible for protecting President Obama in Amsterdam this week were sent home and put on administrative leave Sunday after going out for a night of drinking, according to three people familiar with the incident. One of them was found drunk and passed out in a hotel hallway, the people said. The hotel staff alerted the U.S. Embassy in the Netherlands after finding the unconscious agent Sunday morning, a day before Obama arrived in the country, according to two of the people. The embassy then alerted Secret Service managers on the presidential trip, which included Secret Service

A pair of potentially catastrophic cases will be argued before the Supreme Court on Tuesday. These cases are brought by privately held, for-profit corporations that are arguing their religious convictions should preclude them from offering employees the health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers don’t want to allow their employees’ insurance to cover some forms of birth control because, contrary to medicaland scientific evidence, they believe some birth control causes abortions. Corporations are not people. Corporations cannot have religious views. If religious rights are extended to corporations, it puts us on a slippery slope where any private company

First Lady Michelle Obama talked about America as she visited a school today in China. She talked about the American dream: And my story isn’t unusual in America. Some of our most famous athletes, like LeBron James, and artists, like the singer Janelle Monae, came from struggling families like mine, as do many business leaders -- like Howard Schultz. He’s the head of a company called Starbucks, which many of you may have heard of. When Mr. Schultz was a boy his father lost his job, leaving their family destitute. But Mr. Schultz worked hard. He got a scholarship to a

Washington - A leading Democratic pollster predicted a "sobering" turnout disadvantage for her party in this year´s midterm elections and called on Democrats to articulate "a bigger economic agenda" this fall. "There is a huge turnout disadvantage and challenge," Democratic pollster Celinda Lake said Tuesday at a breakfast with reporters. "There is always a challenge in turnout in an off year, but it´s really dramatic this time." Lake was speaking a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor. Lake and Republican pollster Ed Goeas revealed results of a new George Washington University poll that showed GOP voter intensity in 2014 outpacing

The Obama administration is prepared to give prospective Obamacare enrollees another half-month to signup for insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act website, healthcare.gov, treating the law´s March 31 regulatory deadline as a formality for Americans who claim they tried in earnest to sign up in time. During a March 12 congressional hearing, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told Texas Republican Rep. Kevin Brady that there would be no such extensions. ´Are you going to delay the open enrollment beyond March 31?´ Brady asked. ´No, sir,´ she replied. On the same day, Julie Bataille, a spokeswoman for the

As the U.S. Supreme Court weighed the constitutionality of a contraception coverage mandate Tuesday morning, a federal appeals court heard a separate legal challenge that could have much more sweeping implications for the future of President Obama´s health care law. And if the oral arguments before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit are any indication, it’s time for the White House to start sweating over a lawsuit that up until now has flown relatively below the radar. At issue in the case are the subsidies that the federal government provides for individuals purchasing insurance through Obamacare. Though the text

On her 12 p.m. ET hour MSNBC show on Tuesday, host Andrea Mitchell interrogated attorney Mark Rienzi for representing Hobby Lobby in the Supreme Court case against the ObamaCare contraception mandate: "What right do they have, again, to interfere with medical decisions by women?...I mean, this gets to the whole issue of women´s health and why should women be discriminated against in ways that other medical beneficiaries are not?" [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump] Rienzi pushed back: "No one´s discriminating against women, Andrea, all they´re saying is that, you´re right, these are personal decisions,

On Wednesday, Obama administration officials announced a two week extension in the deadline to enroll in the Affordable Care Act or face a penalty defined as a tax. Asked about this “delay” in the implementation of the ACA on Wednesday, Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said that there has been no delay. He added that some of the users who experienced problems with the website early on need more time, partially because “people are not educated about how to use the internet.” “There’s no hiccup or delay,” Reid insisted. “We had hundreds of thousands of people who tried to sign up and

On Tuesday night two things happened. 1. A trio of Secret Service agents were sent home from Amsterdam after one was found passed out drunk in a hotel hallway. 2. The Obama Administration announced (another) extension of the enrollment deadline for Obamacare signups. At first glance, these two events have little in common with one another. But, modern politics is all about narratives and storylines. And, both of these events confirm a growing concern from the public about President Obama: That he´s just not up to governing his administration and, by extension, the country, effectively.

During oral arguments in the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday which focused on whether the contraceptive mandate in the Affordable Care Act violates the free exercise of religion, Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan suggested employers who have moral objections to birth control should not provide health care coverage for their employees. “But isn´t there another choice nobody talks about, which is paying the tax, which is a lot less than a penalty and a lot less than -- than the cost of health insurance at all?” Sotomayor said during the presentation by attorney Paul Clement, who represents Hobby Lobby Stores

Chicago - In a ruling that could revolutionize college sports, a federal agency has given football players at Northwestern University the green light to unionize. Wednesday´s landmark ruling by a regional director of National Labor Relations Board means the players are deemed employees under federal law and so can create the nation´s first college athletes´ union. Union lawyers argued the Big Ten school´s football players are part of a commercial enterprise that generates hefty profits through their labor. The NCAA, Big Ten Conference and the private school vehemently opposed the union drive. Northwestern argued that college athletes are
