| Daytona Beach, Fla. - Danica Patrick finished eighth in the Daytona 500 on Sunday. She appeared to check up on the final lap when a crash erupted behind her. NASCAR did not throw a caution flag. "You needed a hole. You needed people to help you out," she said. "I had a feeling I was going to get freight-trained (if I went low)." Jimmie Johnson won the race. Patrick led a lap at the Daytona 500, not quite halfway through the 200-lap event. She ran in the top 10 most of the day, and was running third toward the end of the race. She went from 3rd to 8th on the last lap. I don´t call that good. She was in the #1 car and finished 8th by being lucky avoiding some nasty crashes. Again, not that good.
NASCAR itself is boring...boring...boring these days. I was mostly watching bowling with an occasional flip back to the race to see if there were any more crashes. Bowling was better, IMO.

Danica was fantastic. She didn´t get a lot of help, which every driver knows is necessary to win a race. She electrified the crowd, and I imagine the TV ratings too. All the haters who like NASCAR but not her ought to wake up. She is going to make your favorite sport more popular than ever. Way to go, Danica!

It was a surprisingly incident-free race. It seemed to me that the drivers were keeping their distance from each other due to the new car designs. It also appeared to me that, in the last lap, Danica was intentionally blocked to push her back to 8th. WHen they interviewed her, I could tell she wanted to complain about it, but held back. Gotta give her credit for biting her lip on that.

Everyone in a restrictor plate race gets shuffled back. Danica got shuffled at a bad time, the end of the race. Otherwise she drove very well, even leading for a lap, something a lot of drivers would like to have done. Good Job Danica!

Danica did a great job today, and proved herself as a driver, rather than just a woman. Yes, it was a day of historic firsts for women in NASCAR, but now it´s time to move off of her gender and her love life, and let her do her job.

Thank you, #7 and #18. If not simply for her gender, there would have been no story at all for any racer who fell from #3 to #8 in the blink of an eye.
What the story doesn´t say is that the final 5 laps began after a yellow flag, so it was anybody´s race. That she fell back so quickly means only one thing: SHE WAS SCHOOLED.

Finishing in the top 8 was very good. Finishing this race is pretty special in itself. Attrition takes its toll.
The resident misogynists always have to slam her. She´ll keep keepin´ on. Maybe someday she will have the support that the male drivers have.

Shanghai & Hong Kong - China said it was mobilizing resources nationwide to combat a new strain of bird flu that has killed six people, as Japan and Hong Kong stepped up vigilance and the United States said it was closely monitoring the situation. All of the 14 reported infections from the H7N9 bird flu strain have been in eastern China and at least four of the six dead are in the financial hub of Shanghai, a city of 20 million people. The strain does not appear to be transmitted from human to human but authorities in Hong Kong raised a preliminary alert and said they were taking precautions at the airport.

Denver - A psychiatrist who treated James Holmes told campus police a month before the Colorado theater attack that Holmes had homicidal thoughts and was a danger to the public, according to documents released Thursday. Dr. Lynne Fenton, a psychiatrist at the University of Colorado, Denver, told police in June that the shooting suspect also threatened and intimidated her.
