Former Ambassador Still Feels

Deserves Mention at Oscars

The former Canadian ambassador to Iran who played a key role in protecting a group of Americans during the Iran hostage crisis says it would reflect badly on Ben Affleck if he doesn’t in some way mention Canada during the Academy Awards Sunday. But the former ambassador, Ken Taylor, who says he feels like his role was diminished by a film that seeks to make the CIA the heroes in the rescue of six U.S. citizens, isn’t expecting anything, reports the Associated Press. "I would hope he would” mention Canada if Argo wins the Academy Award

Hollywood is always going to dramatize their movies to their own, sometimes politically correct, ends.

In this case both Affleck and Clooney are big time liberal Democrat activists, so the movie will have a political edge with the left wing crowd in Hollywood, who do most of the voting that decide the academy awards.

At several points in the movie the characters give the Canadians huge credit for their courage and loyalty.

Other that the first few minutes I thought the film was well balanced. I think the problem for Canada is that you can´t make a movie of people hiding other people and doing nothing. That would be boring.

By now everyone who can read or hear knows that this movie, no matter how entertaining, was pretty much a work of fiction.

It was not intended to be a documentary. And it wasn´t.

True Americans (and there are only about 50% of us left) are well aware of, and respect, treasure and appreciate our Canadian friends, and their soldiers who have stood side by side and fallen with ours for generations on the battlefield. There are US Army posts where a Canadian soldier can not buy a beer in the club because American soldiers who know what they´ve done in Iraq and Afghanistan tell them their money is no good - Cheers!

Kiev - Ukraine ratcheted up its standoff with the Kremlin on Tuesday by threatening to nationalise Russian property in response to Crimea´s claims to its own assets in the breakaway Black Sea peninsula. (Snip) Russia´s state-owned natural gas giant Gazprom has a vast pipeline network running through Ukraine that feeds clients in southern and western Europe. Other top Russian assets in the former Soviet nation include branches of Sberbank -- the largest lender in Russia and third-biggest in eastern Europe. But Ukraine´s Liga.net independent news site said Petrenko had separately told reporters that Kiev would consider compensating its potential Crimean

OAKLAND, Calif. — Stuck for 26 months in a grim Iranian prison, Shane Bauer often let his mind drift to the shores of Oakland´s Lake Merritt. He would daydream of jogging around the bustling urban lake on a sunny day. And when he and cellmate Josh Fattal surprised Sarah Shourd, Bauer´s fiancee, with a makeshift birthday celebration in the Tehran prison´s courtyard, they all imagined picnicking together on a lakeside lawn. Now the three University of California, Berkeley, graduates who in 2009 inadvertently hiked from Iraq into the hands of the Iranian military have written an intimate memoir about their

First lady Michelle Obama is getting ready for her third overseas trip without her husband since arriving in the White House, but her journey to China may be watched more closely. Mrs. Obama will be traveling with three generations. She´ll be joined by Sasha, Malia and her mother, Marian Shields Robinson, a subtle gesture to traditional Chinese values. White House officials are calling this visit a "people to people" trip. In between meetings with university students, the first lady will make stops at the Great Wall of China, the Terracotta Warriors Museum, and even the Chengdu Panda Base. The highly-orchestrated

Indian Ocean poses daunting challenge

The southern Indian Ocean, where investigators suspect missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 may have come down, is one place where a commercial airliner can crash without a ship spotting it, a radar plotting it or even a satellite picking it up. The empty expanse of water is one of the most remote places in the world and also one of the deepest, posing potentially enormous challenges for the international search effort now refocusing on the area, one of several possible crash sites. Even Australia, which has island territories in the Indian Ocean and sends rescue planes to pluck stricken yachtsmen

Obamacare enrollment push glosses

At Obamacare enrollment events around the state, recruitment organizers emphasize the positive reasons for buying coverage on the insurance marketplace, like staying healthy and getting financial assistance to help pay their monthly premiums. But there’s also the punitive side of the law: how much those who don’t enroll will have to pay at tax time next year. The deadline to enroll is coming fast — March 31 — and many people don’t realize they could be paying far more than the $95 flat fee talked about in the early days of the law, according to enrollment counselors, income tax preparation

The long war over

As Americans have been learning in recent weeks, Russia sometimes has its own way of describing events—like when Vladimir Putin claimed on March 4, despite the presence of Russian troops on the ground, that he hadn’t invaded the Crimean region of east Ukraine. Then there’s the narrative about what is spoken in that invaded country: namely, the Ukrainian language. (Snip) The claim that Ukrainian isn’t a language has been one of the drumbeats of the Russian-Ukrainian relationship for centuries. It’s true that the distinction between a language and a dialect is notoriously slippery, often more about politics than mutual intelligibility

MOSCOW — With a referendum on secession looming in Crimea, Russia massed troops and armored vehicles in at least three regions along Ukraine’s eastern border on Thursday, alarming the interim Ukraine government about a possible invasion and significantly escalating tensions in the crisis between the Kremlin and the West. The announcement of the troop buildup by Russia’s Defense Ministry was met with an unusually sharp rebuke from Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, who warned that the Russian government must abandon what she called the politics of the 19th and 20th centuries or face diplomatic and economic retaliation from a

Republicans won a nice victory in the Florida special congressional election yesterday, which the more gullible and/or excitable pundits are already overhyping. But via e-mail today, I received a reminder that Democrats should be rooting for an audience of two to be similarly over-interpreting the results: Supreme Court Justices Stephen Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. If the justices previously believed it a safe bet that they would be replaced by mainstream liberal justices when they retire, perhaps now they´ll realize their only reasonable course of action is to retire this spring, pending confirmed replacements. The words came out of my mouth before I could stop them. “I feel sorry for Obama,” I said. As my wife looked at me in disbelief, I quickly added a correction. “Well, almost.” Beset by failures at home and abroad, the president cuts a lonely and sad figure these days. His aura of grief reflects his profound loss. His worldview crashed headlong into reality, and reality won. Obamaism is dead, may it rest in peace. That’s sad for him, but hold the tears — his loss is mankind’s hope. If Obama wakes from his utopian visions and faces the

President Obama on Monday slapped Russia with the kinds of economic sanctions not seen since the Cold War, but the administration’s supposed hard line was met with mockery and a “collective shrug” in Moscow, Kiev and Washington. One day after Crimeans voted overwhelmingly to secede from Ukraine and join Russia, the White House and its partners in the European Union responded by targeting high-ranking officials in Moscow along with pro-Russian figures responsible for the unrest in Ukraine. The move adds even more tension to a dramatic standoff between Russia and the West, but early signs suggest the latest round of

Hillary Clinton may well be the most "known" politician in the world. She and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have been on the national stage for more than two decades -- traveling from Arkansas to the White House to the Senate to the 2008 campaign trail and finally to the State Department. During that time, every look and utterance from Hillary has been examined, then examined again, then analyzed, then overanalyzed. That´s why this series of photos -- shot by LIFE magazine in 1969 as part of a feature on outstanding college students -- is so fascinating. It captures
