Defense: Mayor didn´t

LOS ANGELES — The unschooled and illiterate former mayor of the scandal-ridden suburban city of Bell had no training that would have alerted him that his huge salary was illegal, his lawyer told a jury in closing arguments. Former Mayor Oscar Hernandez didn´t have a college or high school degree and didn´t even finish elementary school, defense attorney Stanley Friedman said at the corruption trial. Hernandez is among six former Bell city officials charged with misappropriating funds

Gee, isn´t ignorance of the law not a defence?
Oh, I see...Mayor Hernandez was handicapped by his lack of education, since he didn´t even complete elementary school.
But yet he is qualified to be mayor at $100K/yr as a part-time job?

And so, in the logic of great California legal minds, if there was a white vice president who misspelled the word potato, hispanic ignorance of the law is a valid excuse for theft.

This cabal took the taxpayers of poor little Bell for a very expensive ride. They may not have had a lot of formal education, but they were street-smart enough to know how to milk a good thing.

They should rot in prison.

Ignorance of the law is not a valid defense, especially for a governement employee. If Oscar´s lawyer doesn´t know this, then I suggest somebody look into his legal credentials. Anyone who went to law school and passed the Bar exam knows this. Does Oscar even speak English???

Hollywood films a testament to

In the beginning, there was “The Bible,” the most-watched cable TV show of 2013. Following its flood of faith-inspiring success are three Bible-based movies set to open in theaters this year. The first, “Son of God,” is produced by the married couple who brought “The Bible” to the History Channel and into households across the country — producer Mark Burnett and actress Roma Downey. “We really believed that people would show up in droves, but 100 million people was a big number,” Mr. Burnett said of the 10-hour miniseries’ total audience. “Before we knew those results, we’d already started on

The 2016 Democratic presidential field is likely to run to the left of President Obama, partly because candidates will try to distance themselves from his political baggage while jockeying for an increasingly liberal base of voters, analysts predict. Prospective candidates and their surrogates insist it’s too early to tell what kind of standing Mr. Obama will have with voters and whether he will be seen as damaged goods the way President Bush was for Republicans in 2008. But discontent is brewing within the Democratic Party over what some see as Mr. Obama’s concessions to Republicans. Those Democratic voters will be

The emergence of Twitter as a social media goliath has unleashed gossip and speculation as a media force. The long term consequences are unknowable, but in the meantime, with a far left president with a dicey past, it is producing some highly amusing results. Last night, President Obama explained to Bob Costas of NBC Sports why he wasn´t attending the Sochi Olympics, but the substance of what he had to say was lost in the controversy that erupted on Twitter over whether or not he was stoned. Yahoo writer Mike Oz took the high road, as would nearly any journalist, and described the president as looking "sleepy."

Talley, and the company he founded and led as chief executive officer, are under investigation by the Colorado Division of Insurance, a part of the state Department of Regulatory Agencies which regulates title companies, an agency spokesman confirmed Thursday. NBC whitewashed Russia´s communist legacy in the lead segment of its Friday broadcast of the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage narrated the network´s lionization of the largest country by land mass: "Russia overwhelms. Russia mystifies. Russia transcends. Through every stage of its story, it´s resisted any notion of limitation. Through every re-invention, only redoubling its desire to cast a towering presence." However, Dinklage continued with a glorification of the Marxist-Leninist totalitarian state that slaughtered tens of millions of people between 1917 and 1991:

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The warm-up act for President Obama’s speech here Friday featured a four-piece jazz band playing in front of a John Deere tractor. Obama’s quest to bring together two other disparate elements — Democrats and Republicans — was not as successful. The president traveled to this middle-American college town to tout the passage of a $1 trillion farm bill this week, a rare bipartisan achievement by Congress that the president was eager to highlight. Six congressional Democrats flew aboard Air Force One — but none of the two dozen Republicans invited by Obama showed up. House Agriculture

The strange turn of events began Tuesday, when employees began learning that AOL was switching its 401(k) match to an annual lump sum, rather than distributing the money throughout the year with every paycheck as it had done

Not exactly what you’d expect given the extravagant — and incessant — claims you hear made about the miraculous effects of antioxidants. In fact, they are either useless or harmful, conclude the editors of the prestigious Annals of Internal Medicine: “Beta-carotene, vitamin E and possibly high doses of vitamin A supplements are harmful.” Moreover, “other antioxidants, folic acid and B vitamins, and multivitamin and mineral supplements are ineffective for preventing mortality or morbidity due to major chronic diseases.”

SAN ANTONIO — We recommend incumbent John Cornyn for the GOP´s U.S. Senate nomination, based on unmatched experience and decades of service to Texas. The theme among a bevy of challengers seems to be that Cornyn is a CINO, a conservative in name only. This is not just counter-intuitive but counter-factual. Various ratings — liberal and conservative — have agreed on one thing, Cornyn´s conservative credentials are genuine. Not conservative? Cornyn is No. 2 in Senate leadership and diverged only slightly from the conservative playbook in a year in which he offered a measure that would further beef up security at the
