Leave liberal Hollywood to the liberals
Los Angeles Times, by Jonah Goldberg

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 2/19/2013 8:02:33 AM

"We need to buy a movie studio." Amid the conferences, panels, meetings and informal conversations in the wake of the presidential election, this idea has been a near constant among conservatives who feel like the country is slipping through their fingers. Mitt Romney and the Republican National Committee combined raised just more than $1 billion, and all we got are these lousy T-shirts. Since conservatives are losing the culture, goes the argument, which in turn leads to losing at politics, maybe that money could be better spent on producing some cultural ammo of our own? It´s a bad idea.

I disagree with Jonah on this one. I think getting the conservative message into our own movies is a necessary move. While there may be no direct effects on thinking or behavior, there are subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) messages that have been influencing the masses for decades. You have to fight propaganda with even better propaganda. I think that Jonah´s attitude is exactly why conservatives seem to be losing the battle. We over think and over analyze and then we miss addressing the raw power of emotion. We must begin to fight as they do and beat them at their own game.

Yes #2, it is the schools but also the media.

I´ve been saying this ever since Dan Rather and "National Guard-gate".

If we don´t stop the media from its all out assault on the truth, then we are doomed. They will keep filling the minds of the low information voters with propaganda and America will slip into a black abyss.

Can´t we pool our resources and buy up some of the struggling media outlets? How about a public ownership of CNN, MSNBC, etc.? The Green Bay Packers were bought by the citizens/fans to keep the team from selling and moving. Why can´t conservatives make a run at the news media?

I completely disagree with Jonah. Can you imagine the power of a steady stream of movies, made in the faux documentary style of Michael Moore, that skewer the Occupy movement, jet-setting eco nuts and other liberals just ripe for ridicule? And how about some smart, adult movies without filth and violence. And some kid movies without the constant liberal brainwashing. The possibilities are endless.

Reply 5 - Posted by: olcap, 2/19/2013 8:54:09 AM     (No. 9184512)

Article has me puzzled, as the author makes the statement that "conservatives" want to make Hollywood movies? Which, the author states, is a "bad" idea.

He never states just WHO, of the "conservative" ranks, Is calling for "conservatives" to make movies, presumably to batlle against the left´s movies.

You know, this seems to me to be something the GOP nitwits would think of doing, not conservatives.

Conservatives are not always republicans, and republicans are almost never conservatives. I am really getting upset at the inference that the two are one and the same. They are NOT, most assuredly, and the republican party is absolutely hemorrhaging conservatives, as we speak.

Reply 6 - Posted by: VAPMAN, 2/19/2013 9:10:46 AM     (No. 9184539)

I disagree with Jonah. I believe there is a huge vacuum in the entertainment industry for comedians, TV shows and movies that follow a conservative common sense script. I go to one movie every 5 years because I don´t care to watch gun violence movies made by liberal actors and producers. I also don´t watch TV comedies that preach about how wonderful abortions and gays are, or watch late night leftists make fun of Bush. I would like to see someone in entertainment try it.

My 17-year-old son, a high school junior, very clever, is a conservative, and not because of me(I might have played a bit part)but because he and his crowd think that Ron Paul and son Rand are really cool. My son looks like a hipster, could be mistaken for a leftie-type. I believe that young men like him will lead the way to conservatism in the future. Whaddya think?

I always thought that great literature was written by unhappy people. Liberals are good at writing because they are pessimistic. That revenge thing has worked well for them for a long time. Conservatives are usually optimistic and practical and self-reliant.

I DO think we´re about there at that unhappy point where we will need to vent. It will take only one really good conservative showing and all the lemmings will follow.

But buy a studio and force people to put out conservative fare? No. That´s how THEY operate.

Reply 9 - Posted by: killerbee, 2/19/2013 10:03:28 AM     (No. 9184638)

It´s pretty much impossible for a conservative to get around the Hollywood Socialist machine. You won´t see a conservative studio head, for instance. No decision makers lean right.

But we do need to be getting our ideas out there. The problem is that the left has taken over education from top to bottom. They´ve taken over the news media. They´ve taken over entertainment. If you cross them, you don´t work. It´s a complete tyranny with the Democrat party bosses at the head. It´s pretty overwhelming and depressing, I have to say.

So, buying a studio is probably a losing proposition. I don´t see it making a lot of money. But working on new technologies and finding the next medium for information sharing is very worthwhile. We have to figure out a way around them.

Reply 10 - Posted by: Chuzzles, 2/19/2013 10:52:24 AM     (No. 9184749)

Given that a movie with conservative values in it rocks at the box office (The Passion), Jonah really blew it with this one. Conservative values win every time they are tried. And there are some conservative movie makers out there so putting them under one roof would not be such a bad idea.

Reply 11 - Posted by: jond, 2/19/2013 10:57:02 AM     (No. 9184764)

The "Air America" fiasco should serve as a cautionary tale.

Filmmakers aren´t made overnight, and you won´t find them through an ad in the classifieds.

If a "studio" makes sense - does Jonah mean a production company, a distribution company, or what? - it would be to find talent and support and develop it.

For a model, look at the emerging Christian film industry.

The decentralization of film production and the lowering cost of entry - high quality equipment is getting cheaper all the time - sets the stage for a transformation similar to the one the internet brought to the music industry.

I agree with #7. People here will reject this comment, but it´s obvious to me that uncoolness is an extremely big obstacle for the right. Given this, the only entry way into conservatism for many or most young people is via liberterianism. I also know this from personal experience. I´ve always lived among almost 100% libs, and I used to always feel I had to say I was a libertarian rather than a Republican or conservative (and indeed am much more a libertarian than a social conservative).

In the parking lot of my apartments, there are a couple Ron Paul bumper stickers, but in here the "intown" part of this city you´d better believe there are no Republican bumper stickers!

A New York judge yesterday blasted federal “sequestration” cuts, calling it “stunning” that they could force him to delay the start of a terrorism trial for Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law. Manhattan federal Judge Lewis Kaplan appeared flabbergasted when a defense lawyer for Sulaiman Abu Ghaith said mandatory work furloughs would make it “very difficult to be ready” for trial by September. Kaplan began calling the situation “ironic” before noting that was “not exactly the right word.” “It’s extremely troublesome to contemplate the possibility of a case of this nature being delayed by sequestration,” Kaplan said.

Over the weekend, the Saddleback Valley Community Church announced the sad news that Pastor Rick Warren‘s youngest son, Matthew, committed suicide at the age of 27, after a long struggle with mental illness. On Monday, Megyn Kelly‘s panel took on some of the “despicable” reaction that followed — questioning why the pastor isn’t afforded basic compassion by some of his critics. Noting the “shocking” and “disgusting” vitriol directed at the pastor following the news, Kelly declined to “give a voice to the haters.” Father Jonathan Morris, a Fox News contributor, agreed, deeming the attacks “ridiculous,” “tasteless,” and simply “very sad.”

Bernard Anderson, a pathbreaking African-American economist, understands the importance of rhetoric. He was up front at the Lincoln Memorial when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his historic “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. And he was in the audience on the Howard University campus in 1965 to hear President Johnson deliver a grim view of the state of black America and declare war on “past injustice and present prejudice.” So Anderson had high hopes as he sat at home in Pennsylvania watching President Obama deliver his second Inaugural Address this year.

WASHINGTON — President Obama next week will take the political risk of formally proposing cuts to Social Security and Medicare in his annual budget in an effort to demonstrate his willingness to compromise with Republicans and revive prospects for a long-term deficit-reduction deal, administration officials say. In a significant shift in fiscal strategy, Mr. Obama on Wednesday will send a budget plan to Capitol Hill that departs from the usual presidential wish list that Republicans typically declare dead on arrival.

Washington is edging closer to a budget deal, thanks to a gutsy change in strategy at the White House. Next week, President Obama will propose specific cuts to Social Security and Medicare in his annual budget, according to senior White House officials. That will put the onus on House Speaker John Boehner to show some leadership, too. He needs to push Republicans toward accepting tax increases beyond the $600 billion approved in December. It can be done. As I reported last month, Washington’s biggest myth is that a budget deal is out of reach

WASHINGTON — The North Korean army warned the United States on Wednesday it has been cleared to wage nuclear war using “smaller, lighter and diversified weapons.” In a speech earlier in the day, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel noted that North Korea has both the nuclear weapons and the delivery system “now.” It’s the latest round in an escalation of rhetoric and actions that began with a North Korean nuclear test in February. Still, military officials and experts don’t expect North Korea to launch an attack on the United States.

Two breaking news alerts came through the wire this afternoon: First, the AP sent word that Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has called North Korea´s latest rhetoric a real, clear danger and threat to the U.S. and its allies. Within minutes, CNBC announced that the Pentagon has sent a new missile defense to Guam. The reports that followed those alerts added some meat to the storty -- "Hagel´s comments come as tensions continue to rise between North and South Korea," etc. -- but they are notably lacking in context. How serious is the threat, really? Are the North and South on the verge of war, or is this yet another bluff?

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church.
