State and county officials are trying to determine why a developmentally disabled man died Saturday after off-duty sheriff´s deputies tried to remove him from a Frederick movie theater. The Frederick County Bureau of Investigation and the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating the death of Robert E. It used to be that you could let your mentally disabled adult son go to the movies or other places by himself. Now, you need to worry about the police. The stories about mentally retarded adults dying after interactions with the police are popping up all over the place. People with downs syndrome rarely survive the womb due to the pressure to abort them. Now,it seems they are at risk for being in public while mentally retarded.

A heart attack may be the cause. Congenital heart defects such as Tetrology of Fallot are common in Trisomy 21 children. Please wait for the facts before blaming the police.

Excellent post, #2. People with Down syndrome are more likely to have heart defects and many of these result in early deaths.

We hear so many stories of rogue cops lately (Dorner and the cops who beat the mentally ill man in Orange County two years ago, to name a few). I hope these officers were acting with regard to this man´s safety and civil rights.

There was a time when we had more basic compassion. The guy has Down´s. He paid for a ticket. Let him sit through a second, or even third showing. Didn´t we used to let things like that slide for special needs?

The United States has been at war in Afghanistan longer than any conflict in our history. Regardless of what one might think of the war in terms of strategic value, it has been a brutal, deadly conflict, seemingly without end. But as U.S. forces prepare for the conflict’s end, we can already see the changes to U.S. casualty rates. Indeed, the month that just ended last night, March 2014, marked an extraordinary milestone: as Hayes Brown noted, it was “the first time in more than a decade that there were zero U.S. fatalities among American troops engaging in combat.” In Iraq, the

The Bay Area Toll Authority spent $9.4 million to build a temporary entrance so the Bay Bridge´s bike path could be ready when the new eastern span opened to traffic in September. And now - after less than seven months - the half-mile-long connector is being torn down to make way for a new, permanent gateway. That puts the cost to provide temporary bike and pedestrian access to the bridge at about $47,000 a day.

Everyone knew there would be some gun owners flouting the law that legislators hurriedly passed last April, requiring residents to register all military-style rifles with state police by Dec. 31. But few thought the figures would be this bad. That 50,000 figure could be as little as 15 percent of the rifles classified as assault weapons owned by Connecticut residents, according to estimates by people in the industry, including the Newtown-based National Shooting Sports Foundation. No one has anything close to definitive figures, but the most conservative estimates place the number of unregistered assault weapons well above 50,000, and perhaps

Police are investigating death threats against 5-year-old Disney Channel actress Mia Talerico. The "Good Luck Charlie" starlet has been the target of anonymous harassment and threats against her life posted online. "Good Luck Charlie," one of Disney´s most popular shows, recently made headlines for featuring the first openly gay couple on the network in a Jan. 26 episode. A lesbian couple was worked into the story line — and managed to cause outrage among conservative parenting groups — but the uproar will only be around one episode. The journalists at ABC News offered yet another high profile experiment to terrify the parents of America into not owning guns. In an hour-long special on Friday night, Diane Sawyer and David Muir hid pink guns at the playground of an elementary school in an effort to see if young girls would play with them. Unsurprisingly, the young children did. The Young Guns program also included the obvious revelation that firearms shouldn´t be concealed in backpacks and with candy. Diane Sawyer narrated, "For more than a decade, there has been a powder pink gun on the market." Referencing the location of

World War II vet Frank Whitney is locked in a legal battle with officials who want to take his Saltaire Market grocery by eminent domain in order to build their own updated version. And the upscale village may increase property taxes to do it, raising as much as $2.5 million to buy and rebuild the market, which was damaged during Hurricane Sandy. Whitney’s family says it wants to fix the store — the village’s only commercial property — and has the money to do so, but it accuses

Last summer Ellen Holzman and Meredith Vezina, a married gay couple in San Diego County, got kicked off their long-term Kaiser health plan, for which they´d been paying more than $1,300 a month. The cause wasn´t the Affordable Care Act, as far as they knew. They´d been living outside Kaiser´s service area, and the health plan had decided to tighten its rules. That´s when they discovered the chilly hazards of dependence on the individual health insurance market. When they applied for a replacement policy with Anthem Blue Cross of California, Ellen, 59, disclosed that she might have carpal tunnel syndrome. She

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

When it comes to tracking the cost of Obama family vacations, there are two primary challenges. First, the Obamas are prolific jet-setters, so there are many details to track. Second, the Obama administration, clearly embarrassed by these lavish and frequent family vacations, stonewalls the release of records at every turn. But we have been relentless in pursuit of this information. Our attorneys file the lawsuits and make our case, and our investigators pour through pages of records and crunch the numbers. Thanks to a Freedom of Information request by Judicial Watch, we now have an e-mail Lerner sent to colleagues noting the Department of Justice was looking into criminal prosecutions of these tax-exempt groups.
