Cheater´s capital
Washington Times, by Editorial

It should come as no surprise to anyone who has lived, worked or interned in Washington that the city has been named as “America’s least faithful city,” according to a poll conducted by an online dating website tailored for “married dating.” Infidelity has always been rampant in the nation’s capital. Who can forget the Monica Lewinsky scandal, Gary Hart’s “Monkey Business” or former Sen. John Ensign’s affair with the wife of one of his top staffers? This form of Potomac fever strikes members of both parties, but Washington’s real infidelity is typically not between politicians and their wives, but between politicians

Washington is the ultimate "Venus lie-trap" for congenital liars. Too bad there´s no automated zapper there to rid us of them.

Talking up what the constituents want to hear while running for office then voting differently is not a new thing. Back in the day before the left gained the ground it has now, there was a saying in Washington that you run right and govern left.

I remember thinking during the time of clinton that if a person could not keep a simple promise to one person, what makes people think that person can withstand all the temptations the devil will lay before you in the presidency?

It´s easy to understand why Rand Paul, Kentucky´s junior senator, is his state´s breakout political star. On Wednesday afternoon, I was on hand to see the 51-year-old libertarian Republican at Berkeley -- hardly a right-wing redoubt -- bring a crowd of college students to their feet not once but twice with a speech assailing the federal surveillance regime. (Snip) On sizzle, Paul wins in a walk. But anybody interested in the outcome of the Republican identity crisis needs to get to know McConnell. The 72-year-old is a canny survivor who´s half-century in public life traces the arc of the modern

NEW ORLEANS -- I came to Louisiana to do some reporting on Sen. Mary Landrieu´s bid to win a fourth term in a tough political year. But before heading to the key parishes that will determine Landrieu´s fate this November, I stopped by the Lower Ninth Ward to see how rebuilding efforts are faring nearly nine years after Hurricane Katrina. I visited one particular spot — the area where in August 2005 a flood wall holding the waters of the Industrial Canal broke, setting off a calamity that continues to this day. The destruction was total; the rebuilding is at best

Union representatives from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) are now accompanying federal government safety inspectors on site visits to review labor complaints at nonunion private businesses, The Daily Caller has learned. SEIU and other labor unions can accompany the government inspectors on site visits due to a quiet and contested Obama administration rule clarification issued last year in response to a request from a union representative. SEIU agents recently accompanied an inspector from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a division of the Department of Labor, on three visits to nonunion work sites under contract with the Houston-based janitorial

They could make a movie out of Moochelle Obama’s trip to China, except they already have: “The Ugly American.” It was bad enough when the first lady and her posse of 70 or so coat-holders took off on yet another globe-trotting adventure, but then she said it was “rare” that she got out of the United States. And now they’re holed up in an $8,350-a-night “presidential suite” at the Westin Hotel in Beijing. Aren’t presidential suites supposed to be reserved for, oh I don’t know, presidents? Now we learn that the grandmother, Marian Robinson, “is barking at the staff.” Barking? Surely Comrade Chris Matthews

Some lies just won’t go away. In February the Washington Post published an article with the following headline: “Why There’s No Democratic Version of the Koch Brothers’ Organization.” It was the umpteenth attempt to explain, in a particularly simplistic manner, how the millionaires and billionaires who donate money to the Democratic Party are nothing, absolutely nothing, like those meanie cancer research philanthropists Charles and David Koch. The author, Reid Wilson, interviewed “Democratic strategists who deal frequently with high-dollar donors,” and these Democratic strategists told him, strategically, that their high-dollar donors are better than Republican ones. “For the Koch brothers, electing the

As the prognosticators have adjusted their horoscopes and hesitantly determined that the Republicans may well have a fruitful November, President Obama has sought refuge in a fantasy. “In midterms,” Obama complained to donors last night, “we get clobbered, either because we don’t think it’s important or because we get so discouraged about what’s happening in Washington that we think it’s not worth our while.” Noting obsequiously how grateful he was for their money and support, the president went on to hit a bittersweet note. “We’re going to have to get over that,” he insisted. “This is a top priority.” Comforting as

While the Embassy in Islamabad and Consulates General Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar had adequate emergency action plans — and had sufficient planning, training, and drills for emergency preparedness — there was still concern over a lack of resources, said the State Department’s Inspector General report. The watchdog recommended that these embassy sites obtain the necessary resources and continue to practice emergency drills. The watchdog also

Fred Phelps, the “God Hates Fags” chronic cleric protester from so-called Westboro Church, who died yesterday, proved America’s endless capacity to hype charlatans and kooks. He became a national personality because he persuaded his family cult of several dozen children, grandchildren and in-laws to follow his absurd crusade. Many of the Phelps progeny are lawyers, so they sustained their sect by litigation, often against their adversaries, while spending reputedly hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to demonstrate around the country. Their signage was printed at their own print shop. Phelps was himself a disbarred lawyer who in his early years apparently litigated

A parking ticket, traffic citation or involvement in a minor fender-bender are enough to get a person´s name and other personal information logged into a massive, obscure federal database run by the U.S. military. The Law Enforcement Information Exchange, or LinX, has already amassed 506.3 million law enforcement records ranging from criminal histories and arrest reports to field information cards filled out by cops on the beat even when no crime has occurred. Jimmy Carter has been very active in the decades since his presidency, and his successors have occasionally called for his advice. Except, it turns out, the current occupant of the office. First lady Michelle Obama, her two daughters, Malia and Sasha, and her mother touched down Thursday in China for what’s being touted as a weeklong feel-good tourist event, amid increasing murmurs back home about U.S. taxpayers having to foot the bill. Mrs. Obama is supposed to use her visit for soft diplomacy only, and shy from the more controversial topics that plague U.S.-China relations, namely human rights and economics. No reporters accompanied the family on the trip. “The nature of her visit is really quite

Is Barack Obama simply too busy to be Chief Executive of the United States? Apparently. One of the primary functions of the president is to keep the nation safe, to preserve it from its enemies. To do that effectively, one would actually have to maintain something of a consistent level of attention to the moving pieces that directly influence how future events will unfold. None other than the truly sycophantic thinks for a second that President Obama cares a whit for anything that does not involve fundamentally altering the social composition of this country. Or golf. Black students are more likely to be suspended from U.S. public schools — even as tiny preschoolers. The suspensions — and disparities — begin at the earliest grades. Black children represent about 18 percent of children in preschool programs in schools, but they make up almost half of the preschoolers who are suspended more than once, the report said. Six percent of the nation´s districts with preschools reported suspending at
