Down on Downton: Why The Left is Torching Downton Abbey

| The first thing to do is to admit that I’m a Downton Abbey fan. In fact, I’ve watched every episode twice. But in my defense, I counterbalance my Downton viewings with at least one hour spent with my chainsaw for every hour tuned into Masterpiece Classic. One of the first things one notices, if one is a regular viewer of BBC productions, is that Downton is unusually ideologically and religiously balanced.

Comments: Anti-class warfare message? Sympathetic portrayal of private property owners? Criticism of anti-Catholic bigotry? No wonder lefty critics hate it.

For heavens sake, it is a tv show. It does not change my life. Obama and his policies do affect my life. Worry about him, Obamacare and our rights that he and the left are trying to take away from us.

As the brilliant Andrew Breitbart used to say: Politics is downstream from culture.
The politics that might flow downstream from Downton are not leftist orthodoxy, therefore Downton must be destroyed.
The biggest fan of Downton I know, btw, is my sweet lefty co-worker. Perhaps the time she spends enjoying the exploits of the Granthams will plant the seeds of ideas to make her question her daily dose of the Puffington Host.

Respectfully, tv shows matter. To paraphrase Andrew Breitbart, television shows shape popular culture, and culture shapes politics. Tv shows with conservative messages are an important antidote to all of the morally-decaying swill out there that washes over the low information voters. Conservatives ignore popular culture at their peril.

Downton is the best thing shown on American TV, and that´s saying something for British TV. In fact, most of the stuff we watch in our home is BBC/British TV because American TV is riddled with ridicule of Christianity, filled with sexuality (no, I´m not repressed), and vulgarity fills the air. No thanks, Downton Abbey is dramatic but amusing; it gives all sides a pretty fair shake. There are uglies in the upper crust and in the middle and lower crust, just like real life.
If the lefties hate it, I´ll love it all the more! And it´s televised on their precious PBS!

#1 The TV shows that you disdain have shaped the world which is affecting your life in ways of which you are apparently unhappy. Continue to ignore them at your peril. People tend to believe what they see, and TV can show people virtually anything. Truth, facts, and higher level thinking are irrelevant to the average TV viewer. If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many words does it take to counter a 30 minute TV show that dumps information or misinformation into the minds of it´s viewers at more than 60 frames a second.

Not all lefties hate it. I´ve got a foaming-mouthed leftist friend from college who frequently posts gushing thoughts about DA on Facebook. Once she´s "informed" that it doesn´t condemn the "right people", she may change her mind.
We love Downton, but I am very disappointed in season 3. The writing is slapdash compared to the first two seasons, IMO.

Bingo #5. Listen to the average young teen. They speak the DRIVEL they hear on their favorite media outlets. The Bible states clearly that what goes in our ears and eyes gets down in our hearts and has a direct and profound effect on the direction of our lives. Some lefties may enjoy it but far far more conservatives do. That is true in Yorkshire as well. My English MIL says so!

DA is a highly popular fictional series - leave it at that. It is well written and the facts presented by the knowledgable Mr.Fellowes are a dependable mirror of the first half of 20th century history. It is for us, the viewers, to enjoy both the beautiful settings and to understand the concommitant sadder side of life.

Matthew Crawley, the young husband on DA constantly points out the wanton, careless spending of the household staff and the family members without much incoming revenue. When he points it out, he is condemned for not being a "true" Crawley; for conspiring to undermine the status of the family; for proposing of such mudane, lowly things such as a (horrors!)budget.
Matthew depicts a sensible, logical, conservative in the midst of pretentious, supposedly "entitled" folks even though their entire estate is being supported by (horrors again!) and AMERICAN. The parallel to current society is quite interesting.
***Spoiler alert here***rumor is that Matthew will be gone in season 4***do you suppose it´s because he insists on too much accountablity???

My wife´s a liberal, I´m a conservative, and we both enjoy the show. God forbid there should be some small thing out there that´s not hip-deep in politics.
I do agree that Downton Abbey does an admirable job of not being a "message with a show wrapped around it."

Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Budget Committee say they hope to keep the focus during this week’s expected marathon markup on setting a sound course for the country’s fiscal future. Though such issues have dominated the national political conversation since 2008, this week marks the first time in four years that members will actually debate a budget resolution, with proceedings expected to kick off Wednesday. Having picked up an Oscar, Adele might have thought her incredible US adventure couldn’t get much better. But now I can reveal the Skyfall singer has landed the biggest gig of next year – singing for Michelle Obama during her 50th birthday party at the White House. The 24-year-old star will join Beyonce at the bash on January 17 – proof she has been given the ultimate seal of approval in the US. ‘America’s First Lady will be holding a huge celebrity-packed party for her birthday at the White House next year and, as she adores Adele and Beyonce, she has asked them both to sing,’ says a source.

"I don´t understand it," the Arizona Republican said on Sunday of the threat coming from Sen. Rand Paul,Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Mike Lee and nine other Republicans. "The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand.” "What are we afraid of? ... If this issue is as important as we all think it is, why not take ... it up and debate?"

North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass. The report cited United Kingdom diplomats, saying Pyongyang was demanding the U.S. president personally call Kim Jong-un as one of the conditions to relieve the current conflict at hand. Itar-Tass also quoted the U.K.’s Sky News as saying North Korea currently has eight nuclear warheads.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Los Angeles — Some people have had it with TV. They´ve had enough of the 100-plus channel universe. They don´t like timing their lives around network show schedules. They´re tired of $100-plus monthly bills. A growing number of them have stopped paying for cable and satellite TV service, and don´t even use an antenna to get free signals over the air. (Snip) Last month, the Nielsen Co. started labeling people in this group "Zero TV" households, because they fall outside the traditional definition of a TV home. There are 5 million of these residences in the U.S., up from

Chelsea Clinton has raised her profile in the last few days, which sparked the inevitable question about the former first daughter´s future: Will she ever be like Mom and Dad and run for office? Clinton, 33, essentially said "maybe" in an interview that aired Monday on NBC´s Today show. "Right now I´m grateful to live in a city, a state and a country where I strongly support my mayor, my governor, my president and my senators and my representative," said Clinton, whose father, Bill, was president from 1993-2001 and her mother, Hillary

The letter from the group, “Special Operations Speaks,” supports the appointment of a special committee tasked with the single mission of investigating the attack that left Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead, and shut down the CIA operation in an annex of the Benghazi consulate, in the Sept. 11, 2012 attack. “Congress must show some leadership and provide answers to the public

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.

Amid all of the very real threats of war and stuff from North Korea, you´d think American intelligence officers want as much video footage of the enemy as possible. Well, here is one video featuring North Korean exercises and Kim Jong-Un holding a gun, and we´ll say this: they certainly get points for presentation. The case of a same-sex Connecticut couple accused of repeatedly raping and abusing two of their nine adopted boys is headed for trial. Married couple George Harasz and Douglas Wirth of Glastonbury were supposed to be sentenced Friday in Hartford Superior Court under a plea deal, but instead withdrew from their agreement with prosecutors. The men had already pleaded no contest in January to one felony count each of risk of injury to a minor — a reduction from even more serious charges related to sexual assault....
