Peretz on New New Republic:

Newsbusters, by Noel Sheppard

Martin Peretz, the former owner and editor of the New Republic, has come down strongly on the new iteration of the magazine he first purchased in 1974. So shocked by the content since Facebook´s Chris Hughes took over is Peretz that he published a piece at the Wall Street Journal Thursday titled "The New New Republic: I don´t recognize the magazine I used to own. We were liberal but not narrowly partisan":The New Republic has abandoned its liberal but heterodox tradition and embraced a leftist outlook as predictable as that of Mother Jones or the Nation.

The narrowly partisan will pervert the liberal message every time. The Liberal is defenseless because he cannot see the Fascist behind the mask.

How is TNR different from Time, NYT, CNN or MSNBC? They are all groveling, obsequious flacks for Obama. And they are journalistic assassins against Republicans.

Exactly the way I recall TNR and the NYT, both of which, along with the major news magazines and the local paper, Harper´s, the Atlantic Monthly, the Christian Science Monitor and several others I once subscribed to and read, or at least scanned for something of interest. But gradually, insidiously, every one of these publications, like the then major news media, drifted further and further to the Left as the intellectual quality of their articles declined. Perhaps only those of us who remember what it used to be like can fully appreciate the Leftward slanting of these publications and the media in general. There has been for people like myself a sense of loss as publications that used be of some interest and relatively high quality have become tiresome partisan echo chambers for dogmatists and ideologues.

It is therefore darkly humorous when defenders of such venues and Democratic politicians say that conservatives Republicans have changed, lurched to the Right, become extremists etc. There is no reason to doubt that people who say this believe what they are saying, which only illustrates their lack of knowledge and understanding. Many do not even seem to be acquainted with the history of their own organizations, much less the actual beliefs and values of conservatives and Republicans.

Rev. Al Shaprton, the controversial civil rights leader-turned-broadcaster, was a confidential FBi informant for years and helped the feds put members of the Genovese and Gambino organized crime families behind bars, it was revealed Monday in a sensational exposé. President Barack Obama will speak this week for the second time at the annual meeting of Sharpton´s National Action Network, raising questions about the group´s special treatment. Sharpton´s special relationship with the Justice Department may also explain why his NAN has been allowed to skirt responsibility for $1.9 million in back taxes and penalties it has owed the IRS since 2006

The Obama administration announced Monday that planned cuts to Medicare Advantage would not go through as anticipated amid election-year opposition from congressional Democrats. The cuts would have reduced benefits that seniors receive from health plans in the program, which is intended as an alternative to Medicare. Under cuts planned by the administration, insurers offering the plans were to see their federal payments reduced by 1.9 percent, which likely would have necessitated cuts for customers. Instead, the administration said the federal payments to insurers will increase next year by .40 percent. The healthcare law included $200 billion in cuts to Medicare

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that Republicans might as well wear the insignias of the billionaire Koch brothers on their suits, likening the connection between the Kochs and the GOP to corporate sponsors and NASCAR drivers. “NASCAR fans can easily find their favorite drivers by simply looking at the cars as they fly by, because there are corporate emblems on the hood of the car … for our clothing here in the Senate, we don’t bear commercials logos. Many Republicans might as well wear Koch insignias,” Reid said Monday. “While they don’t wear Koch Industries’ ties and jackets, they

Emerge America was scrutinized for potential “improper private benefit.” No evidence exists that the IRS requested additional information from any Occupy Wall Street group. “Only seven applications in the IRS backlog contained the word ‘progressive,’ all of which

Just about everyone thinking about running for president is kicking it into gear now, slowpokes included. For months, many prospective 2016 presidential candidates have been rubbing shoulders with donors, networking with party leaders, getting on TV and otherwise auditioning for the contest ahead, especially on the Republican side. Their pace is picking up. A few are even admitting now what has been obvious for eons: They´re interested in the presidency, even if they aren´t ready to commit. Others have avoided the usual pathways, for reasons that make sense to them even if their inscrutability exasperates others. "This is the time

Michelle Obama’s campaign against obesity, and for healthy eating is a noble one. However, America’s public school students would beg to differ. In March of this year, the General Accounting Office (GAO) reported that 1.6 million students across America have dropped out school lunch programs since the Michelle Obama-approved Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act required schools to dramatically change what they can eat at lunch. Now, students are posting images of the “healthy, hunger-free” lunches on Twitter and Instagram. Let’s assume they passed on carrot sticks, salad and steamed vegetables as they made their choices. America’s biggest state is now getting its own Breitbart page. Or is it its second, counting Big Hollywood? Or its third, given Big Government’s content? If California is to make its way back to more liberty and less government--and America needs her to find her way back--then a Breitbart site dedicated to this proposition is a requisite. A major new Gallup survey suggests the ObamaCare sign-up numbers are not as soaring as the White House claims. The massive survey, released on Monday, shows the number of uninsured has indeed fallen to its lowest level in years, likely thanks to the Affordable Care Act. The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index measured the share of adults without health insurance. That shrank from 17.1 percent at the end of last year to 15.6 percent for the first three months of 2014. The decline of 1.5 percentage points would translate roughly to more than 3.5 million people gaining coverage. But the numbers, released a

But the progress toward truth was probably not made in a way that Mr. Morell intended. Students at three Dearborn elementary schools received the flyers. A large number of Muslim students attend the schools. Democrats are facing a senior problem that could get even worse this year. The party has traditionally had trouble with older voters, losing the group aged 65 and over by 21 points in 2010 — when Republicans picked up 63 seats — and by 12 points in the 2012 presidential race. Seniors are the GOP’s most reliable voting bloc in midterm years, turning out in higher numbers than Democratic base voters. A recent Gallup poll showed seniors have become even more Republican over the last two decades; in 2013, 48 percent considered themselves Republican. That spells trouble for Democrats, who are already facing
