| Millions of people have watched Maggie Smith on "Downton Abbey." But she´s not one of them. The 78-year-old actress, who portrays Lady Grantham in the popular PBS series, told "60 Minutes" that she hasn´t watched the drama because doing so would only make her agonize over her performance. She said she may watch it someday. Smith told Steve Kroft, in an interview to be televised Sunday, that what she takes from the role is "the delight of acting." She has three Oscars, two Emmys and a Tony Award, but said the "Downton Abbey" role

It is hard to believe, OP. But many actors claim that they can´t stand to watch themselves. Perhaps she is telling the truth.

At this stage in her career, she may not enjoy watching her performance at all. A lot of younger actors watch and agonize, as she might have when she was their age. She probably knows she wouldn´t enjoy the show if she watched it. I believe her.

She delivered her line flawlessly as Lord Grantham was making a fool of himself by demanding the ladies leave the house immediately as the tainted house maid was about to serve dessert. "It seems such a shame to miss a good pudding."

Must be a slow news day. This is VERY old news. The Daily Mail quoted this during the last season of Downton Abbey. Many actors do not watch themselves. They find it a weird experience.

I love Masterpiece Theater and am not ashamed to say I´m addicted to Downton. Haven´t missed a single episode and own DVD of each of the 3 seasons. Can´t wait to see season 4. Maggie Smith is delightful and is perfect for the role of dowager. I enjoy her role and her performance.

Rafter is observant. Margaret Smith is a DBE and arguably the world´s ranking Shakespearean Actress. Roles include Desdemona/Othello, Portia/Merchant of Venice, Gonerill/King Lear, Duchess of York/Richard III; among others. DA is soap opera rubbish for room temperature IQ´s.

I love her. I think she´s our greatest living actress. And of course she´s telling the truth when she says she has not watched the show. It´s agony to watch yourself on film as a performer. For self-critical people, it´s agony.
We are very lucky to still be able to see this incredibly gifted and accomplished actress. I really turn on the show for her, although in this age of trash, it´s just lovely to see such a beautifully produced series in which the author values all his characters, from all British social classes. If you have the chance, read some of the interviews with author and creator Julian Fellowes.

As John Ekdahl says, it’s awfully hard not to see a cynical motive in a conservative senator from a blue state suddenly “evolving” on gun control. I can’t believe I’m saying this after spending years rooting for Toomey primary challenges to Arlen Specter, but … is someone going to end up primarying Pat Toomey? Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky took his message of GOP inclusion to historically black Howard University Wednesday, where he received a polite but tough reception. It was likely the fairest hearing any prominent Republican was going to get, given the GOP´s long-standing struggles with African-American support. A couple of months ago, François Hollande was presented with a baby camel by local authorities in Timbuktu in appreciation for France’s military action against Islamist militants in Mali. The animal did not come quietly. Hollande had initially hoped to have the camel vaccinated and transported to a Parisian zoo, but decided it would be easiest for the French and best for the beast if it were entrusted to a local Timbuktu family who had suffered damage to their property from French tanks. It appears that his trust was misplaced.

Add the name of Michelle Lynne (ne Robert) Kosilek to the list of modern phenomena the Founding Fathers would definitely not appreciate being blamed for. Little did they know what havoc they would someday wreak by adding the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution to prohibit “cruel and unusual punishment.” Now comes Kosilek, a convicted wife murderer doing life without parole. He/she is claiming that it would be cruel and unusual punishment to deny him/her a sex-change operation — excuse me, “gender-reassignment surgery.”Not to get too graphic, but Kosilek is begging for elective amputation of a body part.
