What about the blacks who are not descended from slaves (there were freemen even back to colonial times? Or the native Americans, who were frequently enslaved in the Spanish colonies? Or the unpopular immigrants (Irish, Italian, and other Southern Europeans) who were exploited and abused when they came here. I was hoping that the Dems would have to play choose the minority for the protected seat during the redistricting following the 2010 census. They might have, but the Dems took them to court to force 2 protected seats, one for Sheila and one for a Hispanic.

On second thought, she already has. She thinks the Federal government is and ought to be a vast modern day Freedman´s Bureau. She may have a point. There are a lot of citizens who are unwilling or unable to cope and take care of themselves. They definitely need assistance of some kind. Putting them on welfare and signing them up for food stamps does not begin to address the root of the problem but merely perpetuates their difficulties. A true Freedman´s Bureau modeled loosely on the one of Reconstruction days might be a start.
