The New York Times´s Jackie Calmes bravely speaks truth to power: Inside the White House and out, advisers and associates have noted subtle but palpable changes in [President] Obama since his re-election. "He even carries himself a little bit differently," said one confidant who, like others, asked not to be identified discussing the president. He is relaxed, more voluble and even more confident than usual, these people say, freer to drop profanities or dismiss others´ ideas--enough that even some supporters fear the potential for hubris. . . . As the president prepares to outline his second-term agenda,

Historians over the years have noted these same patterns of behavior also occurred in the life of one of recorded history´s greatest sufferers of narcissistic personality disorder, the late Adolf Schicklgruber. Scary stuff!

With just more than one week to go before convicted killer Christopher Sepulvado is scheduled to die by lethal injection, Louisiana will alter its execution protocol and swap out a one-drug recipe for the same two-drug cocktail used in Ohio executions. In an email statement sent late Monday (Jan. 27), the Louisiana Department of Corrections confirmed it would be changing its execution protocol to allow for the "two-drug protocol" used in Ohio. Previously, the state planned to use just one drug, the barbiturate pentobarbital, to carry out Sepulvado´s Feb. 5 execution. But officials were unable to secure the amount needed to administer a lethal

Federal prosecutors are trying to thwart the easy access that predatory lenders and dubious online merchants have to Americans’ bank accounts by going after banks that fail to meet their obligations as gatekeepers to the United States financial system. The Justice Department is weighing civil and criminal actions against dozens of banks, sending out subpoenas to more than 50 payment processors and the banks that do business with them, according to government officials. In the new initiative, called “Operation Choke Point,” the agency is scrutinizing banks both big and small over whether they, in exchange for handsome fees, enable businesses

Washington - The risk that President Obama may be forced to pull all American troops out of Afghanistan by the end of the year has set off concerns inside the American intelligence agencies that they could lose their air bases used for drone strikes against Al Qaeda in Pakistan and for responding to a nuclear crisis in the region. (Snip) If Mr. Obama ultimately withdrew all American troops from Afghanistan, the C.I.A.’s drone bases in the country would have to be closed, according to administration officials, because it could no longer be protected. Cairo - Islamist militants shot down an Egyptian military helicopter in the Sinai Peninsula with a surface-to-air missile over the weekend, raising new alarms about the terrorist insurgency that developed there in response to the military takeover last summer. The attack — described by witnesses, documented in a video released by the militants, and confirmed by three people briefed on the Egyptian government’s investigation — validated longstanding fears that such weapons would spill into Egypt and beyond after the Libyan civil war tore open Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s fearsome arsenals. Known as manpads, for man-portable air defense

Washington - The US military launched a missile strike in Somalia on Sunday targeting a suspected Shabaab militant leader, defense officials said. One of the officials said an unmanned drone launched the missile in the late evening hours, but declined to confirm the suspect´s identity or whether the strike was successful. The US government has "been tracking this guy for years," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity. Tunis - Tunisia´s national assembly approved the country´s new constitution on Sunday in one of the last steps to establishing full democracy three years after the uprising that toppled autocrat Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali. Just before the constitution vote, Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa appointed a caretaker cabinet as part of a deal to end a crisis between Tunisia´s Islamist party and its secular opposition until new elections this year. Tunisia´s new constitution and progress contrasts sharply with messy transitions in Libya, Egypt and Yemen which are still caught up in turmoil after ousting their own long-standing leaders in 2011 revolts and

Marlise Munoz, who was about 22 weeks pregnant, had been on life support in the hospital in Fort Worth since November 26 after suffering what her husband believes was a pulmonary embolism. When President Obama delivers his State of the Union address Tuesday night, many federal employees will be listening to what the boss-in-chief has to say about them. They shouldn’t get their hopes up too high. Obama has given scant attention to federal employees in his previous State of the Union speeches. Don’t expect this year to be different. One mention was in 2011, when he said: “We’ve frozen the salaries of hard-working federal employees for the next two years.” Two years became three. Of course, everyone with a just cause or a pet project wants a mention in the State of the Union. It is a high-profile address

Moody´s rating agency has lowered the outlook for health insurers from stable to negative, blaming ObamaCare. Few Americans will shed tears for insurance companies. But the Moody´s announcement is a warning sign to taxpayers. They´ll be getting clobbered. Section 1342 of the Affordable Care Act forces taxpayers to make insurers whole for most of the losses incurred selling ObamaCare exchange plans through 2016. The bailout is designed to conceal the failure of the president´s signature health law until he is out of office. No one in the Obama administration talked up the advantages of bailing out insurers. Of course there are aspects of the current Congress that I abhor. Labor leaders who have spent months lobbying unsuccessfully for special protections under the Affordable Care Act warned this week that the White House’s continued refusal to help is dampening union support for Democratic candidates in this year’s midterm elections. Leaders of two major unions, including the first to endorse Obama in 2008, said they have been betrayed by an administration that wooed their support for the 2009 legislation with promises to later address the peculiar needs of union-negotiated insurance plans that cover millions of workers.

Christie knew! Christie lied! Those are the allegations from the former Port Authority official who set in motion the September lane closings on the George Washington Bridge that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has insisted he knew nothing about. The charges are plainly stated in a letter to the general counsel of the Port Authority from the lawyer for former Port Authority official David Wildstein. The mystery is why Wildstein and attorney, Alan Zegas, are saying it now. Wildstein clearly is not driven by guilt over having inflicted chaos on so many people over a four-day period that began with the first day of school
