Cardinal Mahony used cemetery money to pay sex abuse settlement

| Pressed to come up with hundreds of millions of dollars to settle clergy sex abuse lawsuits, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony turned to one group of Catholics whose faith could not be shaken: the dead. Under his leadership in 2007, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles quietly appropriated $115 million from a cemetery maintenance fund and used it to help pay a landmark settlement with molestation victims. (Snip)Families of those buried in church-owned cemeteries and interred in its mausoleums have contributed to a dedicated account for the perpetual care of graves, crypts and grounds since the 1890s.
|
Comments: He "quietly" took 88% of this fund. His actions are indefensible, first perpetuating the abuse, then taking money held in trust to pay off the abused.
In the meantime he was building the hugely costly cathedral that was to be a monument to him.

Right. This is the same corrupt cardinal who spews anti-American crud at every opportunity, giving sanctuary to all manner of illegality... aliens among them.

There go any future donations parishioners would otherwise have made at Mass. Nobody in his right mind would give money to the Church now.

For decades, orthodox Catholics were trying to expose Mahony for what he was: a rabidly liberal prelate who was in bed with Hollywood and was promoting manyt leftist agendas, especially through "Catholic education". We got nowhere. Glad to see the karma swinging its way around the bend.

#2, I am in my right mind and I will continue to contribute to the Catholic Church. As a critically thinking person, I can differentiate between the immoral behavior of a few that happened many years ago--devastating, nonetheless--and the overall intention and history of the institution. While she is not perfect, the Catholic Church has done an immense amount of good in the world, and will continue to do so. Pedophiles and their enablers can be found in all walks of life. Late in the game to be sure, but the Church has finally begun to struggle with this issue and its response to it. That´s more than I can say about a lot of other institutions.

For those who remember the Baltimore Catechism: The matter is seriously wrong, The sinner knows it is seriously wrong, The sinner gives full consent (cannot transfer that much money for which he had a fiduciary duty without knowing what he was doing).
For those who do not believe in Purgatory, look at Psalm 99 which speaks of a God who forgives yet punishes all offenses.

The good cardinal must have learned fiscal manipulation at the feet of both houses of the U.S. Congress, you know, like Social Security funds. I am sure he feels remorse for his deeds, wink wink, but probably only remorse for being caught. He should be stripped of his red cape and hat and reduced to janitoring at the poorest of churches in his diocese.

#4, 10 years ago my devout sister told me that in her parish, St. Mary´s of Foxboro MA -diocese Boston - that people in her parish, motivated "right-thinking" Catholic couples, were "visiting" older parishioners in their homes and pressuring them to sign contracts to agree to donate hundreds of dollars - or as much as they could squeeze -per month to the Diocese. This was during the time Bernard Cardinal Law was in the news for the molestation scandals and the Church was paying out big money.

It first begins with a peculiar, bitter smell.(Snip)Get sufficiently exposed, and you may faint or even die. These are the effects of pepper spray, the chemical that was used by the Turkish police against peaceful sit-in protesters who tried to protect one of Istanbul’s few remaining green spaces against a controversial reconstruction plan in Taksim Square on May 28. Undercover police then proceeded to set fire to the tents left behind by escaping protesters — with all their belongings in them — despite the protesters’ pleas. “Personal responsibility” is a theme frequently drawn upon by people addressing the social problems of the day, including problems that face black communities. (Snip) The bigger problem is that a message that exclusively focuses on personal responsibility without an accompanying clarion call for society itself to improve gives us only half of the answer. BOSTON — Pressing ahead on a pledge to work harder to help elect Democrats in his second term, President Barack Obama is visiting Massachusetts to rally voters ahead of a special Senate election. But the trip Wednesday also creates opportunities for Republicans eager to link Democrat Ed Markey to the Obama administration’s recent troubles. A string of high-profile controversies involving the Internal Revenue Service and government intelligence-gathering raises questions about whether Obama will be more asset or liability for his party in the coming election season, with control of Congress and his second-term agenda at stake. Even in Democrat-friendly Massachusetts,

His latest take: It´s an unfair question, he said, like "When are you going to stop beating your wife?" And it seems to depend on the meaning of "collect." SANFORD, Fla. — Experts dispute whose voice is heard in the background of a 911 call from the night Trayvon Martin was shot and killed. A police detective, Chris Serino, wrote in an early report that he could hear a man yelling “Help” or “Help Me” 14 times. Prosecutors say the voice is Martin’s. Defense lawyers say it could be George Zimmerman, who they say was being pummeled by Martin.(Snip) a video has been released that the defense says could help authenticate the 911 call. The technology giant made the request in a letter to Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. and FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III on Tuesday. Google is trying to counteract damaging media reports that the company allows the National Security Agency access to users´ online communications.

Efforts to bring 11 million undocumented immigrants out of the legal shadows cleared their biggest congressional hurdle yet on Tuesday, with an overwhelming vote in favour of bringing to a conclusion Senate debates on immigration reform.(Snip)Further amendments to the 1,076-page bill are expected over the coming weeks, particularly on the vexed issue of border security. But the fact that the Republican leadership in the Senate has chosen not to use this opportunity to block the bill´s progress increases the chances that the fragile bi-partisan consensus may also hold during a rockier passage through the House of Representatives.

Remember the sequester? If not, to hear Bloomberg´s Al Hunt tell it, that may be cause for alarm. "Alzheimer Research Cuts Show Folly of Sequestration," according to the headline of his latest column. The argument is obvious but subtly wrong. It´s a variation of the old Washington Monument ploy: pick out a government expenditure almost anyone will agree is vital or at least worthwhile, note that across-the-board cuts will not spare it, and then conclude that across-the-board cuts are foolish or wicked.

In a Gallup tracking poll released Tuesday, former-President George W. Bush currently stands with a favorability rating of 49%, compared to 46% who see the 43rd president unfavorably. Meanwhile, another Gallup poll shows President Obama with only a 47% approval rating, with 44% disapproving. If you think about it, this makes perfect sense. After all, Obama fooled everyone when he ran as the anti-Bush in 2008. Everyone thought Obama meant he would be less hawkish than his predecessor. The Obama administration was facing renewed pressure over the secrecy of its surveillance programs, as a group of US senators demanded it reveal how it interprets the laws that underpin them and foreign governments expressed growing concern. Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) said Wednesday that the incidence of pregnancy caused by rape is "very low," prompting criticism from Democrats who said the GOP is waging a "war on women." Franks made the comment during a committee mark-up of his late-term abortion ban bill, which is expected pass the House next week. The Republican lawmaker was arguing against a Democratic amendment allowing rape and incest victims to procure abortions. As written, the bill only exempts women whose lives are in danger. "You know, the incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low," Franks said.
