Detroit, the Billionaire’s Playground
New York Times, by Mark Binelli

Original Article

With the fourth anniversary of the Obama administration’s auto bailout approaching, the Detroit comeback narrative has settled into accepted history. Just last week, Chrysler, once the wobbliest of the Big Three, announced a ninefold increase in profits since 2011. (Snip) Detroit was back! Unless, of course, by “Detroit” you meant the actual city rather than the auto industry, in which case, well, the picture becomes a bit more complicated. Battered for decades by the same problems — a steady loss of people and jobs, a soaring murder rate, a wholesale erosion of its tax base — the city now faces the

Comments:
If you every wonder the ultimate outcome of the Ponzi or pyramid scheme that are Unions and employees, just turn to Detroit. The dRATS controlled Unions get their worker bees to give them dues with the promise of big paychecks. Problem is, eventually, the consumer cannot bear the cost and the Company fails.

And left behind are large swatches of prime land at bargain prices. See, the connection to the game of "Monopoly." The really rich now buy out and make even more money for their concepts. Is this capitalism at its best or criminality at its worst?

It really doesn´t matter what the billionaires want to do, you still have the people living there and for the most part they are useless. Unless those uber-rich can move everyone out to someplace else (good luck) Detroit will continue to rot from the inside.

The author is a snarky little twerp, to be sure. He seems to have some sort of wealth axe to grind.

Beyond that, there is some interesting info in this rather short article! It´s kind of amusing to see successful wealthy people circling the helpless hapless "Midwest hillbillies" trying to act like they still run the city of Detroit.

The Detroit City Council is so corrupt, they´d rather the city die than relinquish any control. It would be a lot harder to loot the coffers if outsiders were running the show. I live in a northern suburb of Detroit. I have very little optimism for its future.

Former President Jimmy Carter (D) says he thinks the National Security Agency might be monitoring his emails. In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Carter said he sends messages to foreign leaders via snail mail instead. “As a matter of fact, you know, I have felt that my own communications were probably monitored. And when I want to communicate with a foreign leader privately, I type or write the letter myself, put it in the post office and mail it,” he said “because I believe if I sent an e-mail, it will be monitored.” Asked what he thinks of the NSA’s surveillance programs, Carter said they've been “extremely liberalized” and have

Johannesburg - Prosecutors at Oscar Pistorius’ murder trial have presented a “golden thread” of evidence suggesting Reeva Steenkamp screamed before she died, leaving the double-amputee athlete with “serious questions” to answer and his defense likely hinging on his own testimony, a legal expert in South Africa said. Three neighbors say they heard a woman scream before and during the deadly gunshots coming from Pistorius’ home in the early hours of Valentine’s Day last year. The pathologist who performed the autopsy on Steenkamp’s body said it would have been “abnormal” for her not to scream from some of her injuries.

Selfies are all the rage right now. Ellen Degeneres´ star-studded selfie at the Oscars -- taken by Georgetown grad Bradley Cooper! -- became the single most retweeted tweet in the space of a few hours. And the Oxford English Dictionary, that fount of contemporary hipness, named "selfie" the word of 2013. Now the Clintons are getting in on the action. At a Clinton Global Initiative University event in Arizona hosted by late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, a selfie was taken. Kimmel tweeted it from his account. Nigerian security officials said the attack late on Saturday in the town of Bama in Borno state bore the hallmarks of an attack by the al Qaeda-linked militant group Boko Haram, which is fighting to carve an Islamic state out of northeast Nigeria. Top lawyers have written guidelines for British solicitors on drafting ´sharia-compliant´ wills which can deny women an equal share of their inheritance and entirely exclude non-believers, it was revealed today. The Law Society, which represents solicitors in England and Wales, has written a guide on Sharia succession rules that will be used in British courts. It will mean that children born outside of marriage and adopted children could also be denied their fair share. The guide states: ´No distinction is made between children of different marriages, but illegitimate and adopted children are not Sharia heirs.
