| A Duke University fraternity has been suspended from its national affiliation after complaints about a themed party last week that featured Asian stereotypes. About 200 Duke students gathered Wednesday to protest the Kappa Sigma party, which was held Friday. The party originally was called “Asia Prime” in social media posts that featured references to drinking sake and an exaggerated, stereotypical language, such as saying “Herro” instead of “Hello.”(snip)Still, photos from the party showed mostly white students wearing sumo wrestler costumes and chopsticks in their hair.

Next time they should dress up as Vikings. Scandinavians love a good party, and we won´t complain if anyone shows up wearing horns. Skol!

Next time they should consider a toga party. Wait, that will upset the Italians. Well, how about a Medieval party. Whoops that will upset all of Europe. How about a Mad Men party. Enter the offended feminist. Antebellum party? Civil War party? You got it, here comes the offended minorities. Don´t even think about a Cowboys and Indian party. Looks like all that is left is a Gay Pride Parade party. And that my friends is how we channel young men into Alan Alda wussy types.

Let’s say that a Asian college and one of its fraternity´s held a similar themed party, but instead it was an "American" theme event, you know with stereo type cowboys, Indians, mobsters, hillbillies, Hip-hop stars, football players, baseball players and etc., would we be upset?......NO
Why do we care so much that these kids want to act and behave like idiots...I really don´t care. When they return to real life in public, and continue this unacceptable rude behavior then raise some flags, but what a bunch a stupid college kids do behind closed doors is their business.

Oh, for god´s sake, I´m so tired of all the PC crap. Ms. Zhou said: " It trivializes me! It makes me feel like less than a human being.”
My feeling is that Ms. Zhou has a serious problem if a frat party can make her feel "less than human". My only concern about a fraternity or sorority party would be the the possible consumption of alcohol, drugs, and sex.
As a "Greek" alumnus, to my knowledge Asians are not prevented from "rushing" and can join any national Greek fraternity/sorority on any campus. My guess is there are probably Asian students on Duke´s campus who are in the Greek system. Maybe they even have their own Asian fraternity or sorority.
Where I went to school in the 60´s we had both a national "black", Greek fraternity and a national "black" Greek sorority. My bet is that neither of them seek out white or Asian members even now in our PC culture. However, the so-called "white" Greeks on my campus opened their arms to both, because their national organizations said they should.
While I agree that race discrimination is bad for many reasons and actually short-changes society when it occurs, the idea that we can´t discriminate is hypocritical. We discriminate all the time - such as choosing brown shoes over black or navy blue shoes. I discriminate when I go to the grocery store - do I buy Folger´s coffee, or do I buy Hill´s Brothers or Maxwell House? Do I buy Coke or do I buy Pepsi or 7Up?
Whatever happened to just having fun?

But a black fraternity can have a whitey party and go in whiteface, and that´s OK.
One of the amusing things about the Seinfeld TV show was that they made fun of everyone! Homosexuals, lesbians, native americans, Asians, blacks, physically handicapped, mentally challenged, mentally disturbed, affirmative action, and on and on. One of the best ways to get over a bias is to address it directly. Seinfeld allowed us to have guilty pleasure watching the show.

They do say herro. They do get their L´s and R´s mixed up. And the funny thing is they get L´s and R´s mixed up even in their e-mails and documents. And ten years ago before I started working here I thought it was just in their speech. And they take no offense when I correct them and they in turn teach me some Japanese.
And just like in the old B&W movies of the 50´s they say Ah-So a lot. And many of them grin a lot and have big front teeth just like in those old movies. And they are great to work with and immensely fun at lunch and love American food.
They also say Hi(hai) over and over when on the phone talking back home to the corporate office. I finally asked my cubicle neighbor what Hi meant after hearing him say nothing but Hi on the phone for over an hour. He said it was Yes. I asked what was the word for No. He said they never say No. They just say That will be very difficult. And that seems to be true across all the Asian culture.

President Obama´s decision last year to allow young people living in the U.S. illegally to stay and work marked the biggest shift in immigration policy in decades, hailed as a landmark step toward the American dream for a generation of immigrants. But months later, many immigrants are having vastly different reactions to the change depending on where they live, and they aren´t flocking to the program at the levels the government originally expected. A handful of Republican-led states are blocking basic benefits for those in the program, denying beneficiaries identification cards, driver´s licenses,

Pima County will spend $284,000 to save horned lizards and other critters from an untimely and premature squishing at a west-side construction site. Work is starting on a project to stabilize the banks of the Santa Cruz River from Ajo Way to Silverlake Road. The river and surrounding parklands are home to regal horned lizards and other uncommon kinds of reptiles and toads. (Snip)The plan is to collect certain species, hold them in specially designed corrals during construction, help them get re-established in their renovated home when the time is right and then monitor their survival.

On Easter Sunday, Google is honoring the birthday of the late labor organizer Cesar Chavez by placing a Chavez portrait within the middle “o” of the Google logo that appears on the homepage of the popular search engine. While Google frequently decorates its logo to celebrate various holidays and special events, it is unclear why the company chose specifically to honor Chavez’s birthday, instead of Easter Sunday. Chavez co-founded the organization now known as the United Farm Workers union (UFW). He became an iconic figure in the labor movement, with his stature only increasing since his death

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”
