Why conservatives should
back immigration reform

Politico, by Al Cardenas

Original Article

Posted By:Pluperfect, 2/7/2013 5:54:53 PM

I am pleased that the conversation on immigration reform started in earnest last week after a bipartisan group of senators unveiled a set of principles that will guide the debate moving forward. Despite Senator Marco Rubio’s interviews with Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and Mark Levin, a number of my colleagues in the conservative movement remain skeptical. That is understandable given Congress’s history. In 1986, President Ronald Reagan championed amnesty for over one million unauthorized immigrants in exchange for significant reform — which would have included a thoughtful process moving forward that would restrain, if not completely stop,

And Reagan regretted being rolled by the Left on that one.

Mr. Cardenas, we need murder reform. No one follows that law either. So, if you´ve murdered and gotten away with it for 2 years, we give you amnesty.

Hey, what´s the rule of law if only applied to specific instances?

Lack of enforcement does not equal the need for reform.

And no, I am not equating murder with illegal immigration.

Doctors talking about preventing household accidents is all well and good but when you have an open wound the ER docs don´t bother about the lectures and instead focus on stopping the bleeding.

I don´t care what side of this issue you fall on - as long as the border chaos continues then any ´reform´ is pointless because of the moving target.

I am all in favor of immigration reform.

First, we go back to the Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965, Hart-Seller, passed in the fever days of the Great Society. Repeal it forthwith, and substitute a bill that FAVORS the immigration of successful and accomplished people, and requiring some accountability for maintaining contact with those resident aliens who came here on visas. No overstays, and no sneaking in a whole family under a "compassionate" clause. The applicants have to be able to support themselves once they arrive in this country, without resorting to any of the welfare programs. Their only "welfare" in that instance is to be given a one-way ticket back to their place of origin. While here, the resident alien is expected to comply with the law as any citizen would, and would be subject to legal action if extenuating circumstances could not be demonstrated. The alien is a GUEST, and is accorded only the rights extended to guests, which are vastly more limited than rights extended to citizens.

Bunch of verbs here used to say nothing. The salient point here is that we DO NOT have de facto amnesty, because illegals cannot vote. Secondly, the fact that the real unemployment rate is around 15% yet illegal guests comprise 5% of the US work force ought to tell you everything you need to know about the "jobs Americans won´t do" shinola.

Notice how the ´Rats are steadfastly opposing every proposal of sealing the border first. They DON´T want immigration reform. Uncontrolled influx and a straight road to citizenship through amnesty to dilute the patriotic vote is the clear goal.

At the risk of repetition, illegals in addition to taking jobs from Americans also depress wages. Any amnesty will attract more, and, quite frankly, are YOU going to pay for their social security and medicare? They can´t, because they haven´t and never will pay anything significant into the system if they were made legal.

Lot of words, but no mention of why we should even listen to him.

Why is it that every other crime on the books, when caught, the criminal isn´t allowed to profit from his crimes.

Yet for criminal alien invaders who trespass into this country, commit identity theft to have papers in order to work, often smuggle (guns, drugs, sex slaves) when entering this country, often commit crimes/drive under the influence of drugs &/or alcohol, etc. etc. etc. then get rewarded with a "path to citizenship" for themselves and instant benefits for their children.

Where is the justice or "fairness" in this?..they get to line-jump ahead of all the millions of legal immigrants from every nation in the world who are following the rules.

"Reform", in this case, is happy talk. A device to achieve nothing while saying you have fixed a problem.

It doesn´t matter what the immigration laws say if they are not or cannot be enforced.

Obama won´t enforce any provisions he dislikes. And the Democrats see millions of new voters.

Which means state voter registration laws have to be neutered too. So Holder´s DOJ attacks every single attempt to enforce them.

No improvement will be made while Obama is in office. Only the wording of the deceptions will mutate.

This is just another piece of "Amnesty is inevitable" tripe from the political press. Most illegals are not interested in a path to citizenship but rather a path to benefits. There is a big difference. Think of 30 million illegals eligible for ObamaCare.

I disagree. The vast majority of illegal aliens are poor generally uneducated people who earn low wages and have big families. With human nature being what it is, once legalized they will access every safety net social welfare program that they possibly can to survive here.

Right now as illegal aliens, being ineligible to access most social welfare programs, they have little choice but to accept any job offered to them at whatever wage the employer wishes to pay them. Once legalized they will no longer have to accept those hard jobs and many will not. Employers won´t care because they will just hire from the new crop of illegal aliens who are sure to appear encouraged to come here because of the amnesty.

Common sense dictates that the vast majority of those people, when they are given US voting rights will vote for the liberal Democrats, who promise them complete access to social welfare programs and other rights, rather then vote for Republicans who want to downsize those programs and limit the legalized aliens access because of the huge costs that the government is sure to incur.

President Obama is pressuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make peace right quick — with an implicit threat that otherwise the Jewish state will lose legitimacy. That’s profoundly wrong. In an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg of Bloomberg View, Obama asserted that “if Palestinians come to believe that the possibility of a contiguous, sovereign Palestinian state is no longer within reach, then our ability to manage the international fallout is going to be limited.” Those words give pernicious credibility to a corrosive movement that sees Israel as the root of all evil in the Middle East.

At this point, eight months before the Nov. 4 election, it’s hard to see a lot of good news for congressional Democrats. No matter how you look at it, the House seems out of reach. Today, Republicans appear a bit more likely to gain than to lose seats; it would take a cataclysmic event for Democrats to score the net gain of the 17 seats they need to take the majority. What’s changed is that Democrats’ chances of holding onto their majority in the Senate is looking increasingly tenuous. There are now at least 10, and potentially as many as 13, Democratic-held

At Chipotle, guacamole costs extra - but it soon may not be available at all thanks to climate change. The Denver, Colorado-based chain of Mexican fast-food restaurants threatened to take the condiment off the menu because of the rising price of avocados. While the avocado crop is currently fine, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are predicting drier temperatures will lead to a 40 per cent drop in California´s avocado crop over the next 32 years. Most modern scientists agree that there is a direct correlation between the increase of droughts and global warming, according to Think Progress.
