Just an FYI, it took some 25 years to get Tort Reform done in Texas. I worked for a lawyer in Austin and we worked on Tort Reform, that was in 1987. He had been working on it for two prior legislations (and the Legislature meets only every other year in Texas). It took about 5 bills in all over the course of some 25 years before we got the kind of tort reform we wanted. We just kept chipping away, building relationships, getting people elected, education the electorate. It took a long time, the Trial Lawyers have a powerful lobby -- although not as powerful as the NRA. :-)

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — The Malaysian jetliner missing for more than a week was deliberately diverted and continued flying for more than six hours after severing contact with the ground, meaning it could have gone as far northwest as Kazakhstan or into the Indian Ocean’s southern reaches, Malaysia’s leader said Saturday. Prime Minister Najib Razak’s statement confirmed days of mounting speculation that the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 to Beijing was not accidental. It also refocused the investigation into the flight’s 12-person crew and 227 passengers, and underlined the complicated task for searchers who already have been scouring vast

LOS ANGELES — David Brenner, the gangly, toothy-grinned "Tonight Show" favorite whose brand of observational comedy became a staple for other standup comedians, including Jerry Seinfeld and Paul Reiser, died Saturday. He was 78. Brenner, who had been fighting cancer, died peacefully at his home in New York City with his family at his side, according to Jeff Abraham, his friend and publicist. "David Brenner was a huge star when I met him and he took me under his wing. To me, historically, he was the godfather of hip, observational comedy," comedian Richard Lewis said in a statement. The Associated Press and the National Journal have corrected erroneous stories they ran about Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), misquoting a remark that he made at an anti-abortion rally. On Wednesday at the Susan B. Anthony List “Campaign for Life Gala and Summit,” Cruz reminded his audience that pro-abortion advocates had chanted “Hail to Satan” last year at a rally in Austin Texas. The AP attributed to Cruz a remark that said abortion rights activists were “Satan Worshipers.” The AP article, written by Philip Elliott, was corrected on Thursday and re-printed with Cruz’s actual statement. In one of the thousands of Clinton administration papers released Friday came a hint of what is to come if Hillary Rodham Clinton decides to run for president in 2016. In a January 1996 memo to White House communications director and speechwriter Don Baer, President Clinton´s political advisor Paul Begala wrote that in the upcoming State of the Union address “it’s imperative that the president defend the honor of the first lady tonight, with the whole country watching.” “The Republicans are attacking her without compunction, in part because they know the Democrats are too ... to retaliate,” Begala wrote, including a

We do not expect the shock to be obliterative, dislocating to both body and mind.” We cannot know, she says, when we lose the person we love—as she lost her husband John Gregory Dunne 11 years ago—“the unending absence that follows, the void, the very opposite of meaning, the relentless succession of moments during which we will confront the experience of meaninglessness itself.” The tragedy

Fresh from appearing on Funny or Die’s “Between Two Ferns,” Obama stepped up a few notches to Ryan Seacrest’s national radio show. Entertainment industry insiders, agents and teenage girls know what a coup it is for any talent to get a few minutes with Seacrest, and Obama made the most of his visit. Take a listen. Yesterday was Pi Day — it will be the 3/14 number to fete — an event that required the enjoyment of food with a circumference like, say, a blueberry pie. They did. But where are they now? An army of 15 million voters under 30 swept Obama past Hillary Clinton and John McCain and to the presidency in 2008. More than 12 million helped him return in 2012. Last week, the U.S. Tenth Circuit decided a case that should reverberate on Capitol Hill. In Kerr v. The three-judge panel — consisting of Carter and Clinton appointees — ruled in favor of the legislators’ standing. This decision should embolden members of Congress who correctly believe that President Obama has encroached upon Congress’ constitutional authority. Indeed, Congress should do no less in defending its authority than the five Colorado state legislators. They like their friends, their digital “social networks,” and their toys, and that’s about it.
