Super Bowl broadcast marred
with excess commercialism,
scripted approach

Baltimore Sun [MD], by David Zurawik

Original Article

It was a fabulous day and night for TV football, with the Ravens winning the Super Bowl, 34-31. But little thanks for that goes to CBS, the network that had broadcast rights to the game. The network´s pregame show was overproduced and under-imagined, with no unifying vision. One segment that found Boomer Esiason and Shannon Sharpe walking the streets of New Orleans handing out Pizza Hut pizzas to people willing to yell "hut, hut, hut," set a new low in debasing broadcasters and turning what is already an over-commercialized production into a nonstop advertisement.

The Super Bowl was last night?...

I no longer watch this unless I have a dog in the race. I could have made money, I KNEW the Ravens were going to be allowed to win.

(and spare us, #2, nobody "allowed" the Ravens to win...)

The sportcasters for the game were totally out of touch. My wife and I kept asking each other what had happened on many points of the game as the sportscasters talked about how wonderful Kapernuk (sp?) was and how he was going to pull the game out for the 49ers. So much for media bias, even in the sports field. I would have rather watched UK Basketball.

The Kansas City Chiefs are playoff-bound, but no matter how the team performs in that arena, its fans can rest assured of one thing: Someone in the front office has an excellent eye for team-appropriate Christmas-tree ornamentation. With the holiday season upon us—and the playoffs right round the corner—The Wall Street Journal contacted all 32 of the NFL´s teams and asked them to send photos of the Christmas trees located at their facilities. All but three teams submitted entries. And since this is the NFL, there has to be a winner: Hence, our first-annual NFL Christmas-tree power rankings. To compile

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said the inordinate amount of discussion on mainstream media networks about what color Santa Claus should be sharply reflects the media´s "skewed priorities." This is especially so since it seems there will be more segments about Santa´s race than segments about MSNBC host Martin Bashir´s vile and threatening remarks against Palin. In an interview with Newsbusters, which first put up the video of Bashir´s comments in which he said someone should defecate and urinate in Palin´s mouth, Palin said she was out on her book tour for her book, Good Tidings and Great Joy: Protecting

The head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement defended the role of federal agents in transporting illegal immigrant children after a federal judge complained they were hand-delivering smuggled kids to parents in the United States. “While the court’s comments did not relate specifically to ICE, it is clear that the transportation of unaccompanied children (UAC) by ICE personnel is appropriate and legal,” acting Director John Sandweg wrote in a brief email obtained by FoxNews.com. The email was sent Monday and addressed to “all ICE employees.” Sandweg noted that “recent media reports” on the judge’s order had “prompted discussion about whether ICE

President Obama on Monday signed an executive order giving military personnel and civilian federal workers a 1 percent pay raise, the first raise for civilians in four years. But for military families, it was another hit. Military members had been receiving an annual pay increase of 1.8 percent, and ther order comes as more benefit cuts loom on the horizon for military families due to tightening budgets. For active-duty troops and veterans, making financial ends meet has gotten increasingly difficult in the past four years, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a non-profit think tank, which estimates

As in any other year, 2013 provided countless Democratic pearls of inanity and incoherence as President Obama’s administration and colleagues found themselves engulfed by multiple scandals, the horrific rollout of Obamacare and a near-disaster abroad with the Syrian crisis. It was a 2013 that saw one top White House adviser call the law “irrelevant” in the wake of the IRS targeting fiasco, many Democrats and the president himself spin the “Lie of the Year” about Obamacare as being totally true, and one congresswoman seek to give unemployment insurance to “working men and women.” It was a year that saw Jen

The White House announced on Monday that it had “successfully” signed up President Barack Obama for a “bronze plan” through the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance exchanges. The administration admitted that the move was largely “symbolic,” but they wanted to demonstrate a “show of support” for users attempting to navigate the insurance exchange marketplaces. And those marketplaces are in dire need of a show of support. Earlier, the White House — quietly and without announcement — delayed the deadline to purchase insurance in order to receive coverage by January 1 from December 23 to December 24. While the Japanese were celebrating the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, the mastermind of that attack, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, had a sobering message for his countrymen. "We have awakened a sleeping giant," he said. Even before the war began, the admiral had warned his emperor that Japan would enjoy early victories in any war with the United States, but that winning streak would last only six months to a year, after which American industrial might would inevitably overwhelm the small island nation. He was right. For the first few months of World War II, the Japanese war machine steamrolled

At the heart of the Duck Dynasty controversy is a modern paradox: those who most loudly celebrate the gay lifestyle seem to go into a Victorian swoon whenever anyone even obliquely mentions actual gay sex practices such as anal sex. As we watch the corporate clusterduck swirl around the alleged wrongs of reality TV star Phil Robertson concerning homosexuality, it may be instructive to take a step back. Image control has been crucial to gay activists. In 1980 Hollywood produced, Cruising, a big budget film that showed the seamier side of gay life. It got pretty good reviews because it

Let´s get a few things straight about what Phil Robertson said that got him in trouble. Defenses of Robertson, the star of "Duck Dynasty" suspended for his remarks in an interview with GQ, have focused on the idea that he was just crudely expressing the sincere, Christian view that homosexuality is sinful. (Snip) Robertson´s defenders should read his comments again, because their defenses are off-point. If you´re defending Robertson, here´s what you´re defending: 1. Robertson thinks black Americans were treated just fine in the Jim Crow-era South, and that they were happy there. 2.Robertson thinks the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor

Instead, shoppers are being asked to wait to pay for certain items at a different till. The policy highlights a divide among the mainstream food retailers over whether religious staff should be excused from certain tasks. In its rush to pass a budget deal, Congress voted to slice the benefits of veterans, even those who retire after suffering injuries while serving their country. This unconscionable sneak attack on former members of the armed services was evidently inserted into the legislation by GOP House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan during talks with lead Democratic negotiator, Sen. The provision would cut veterans’ cost of living adjustments beginning in 2015 by $600 million a year — less than one-tenth of 1% of the $630 billion Pentagon budget. But the pain would be real. The Bipartisan Budget Act that Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and I drafted will soon become law. We think it´s a small step toward fiscal discipline in Washington. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill will reduce the deficit over the next ten years by over $20 billion. And unlike current law, it will provide much-needed relief to our already strained defense budget. One part of the bill has become particularly controversial: the reduction in cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for working-age military retirees. What a depressing presidency Barack Obama has wrought. Waltzing into office five years ago with the media’s shameless aid on a high-school-style campaign pledge of “Hope and Change,” the former community organizer from Chicago spent his last press conference of the year apologizing for everything he’s done wrong — then announcing he’s “eager to skip town” to Hawaii for “a couple days of sleep and sun.” Well, 17, but who’s counting.
