North Dakota Went Boom

| Long before the full frenzy of the boom, you could see its harbingers at the Mountrail County courthouse in Stanley, N.D. Geologists had pored over core samples and log signatures and had made their educated guesses, and now it was the hour of the “landmen,” the men and women whose job was to dig through courthouse books for the often-tangled history of mineral title and surface rights. (Snip)… around seven years ago — driven by technological refinements that have made North Dakota a premier laboratory for coaxing oil from stingy rocks — the state’s Bakken boom began....

Comments: Long, but highly informative. The usual NYT condescension and snark are, unfortunately, seeded throughout.

Boom and bust, always. But something this strategic handled correctly usually produces a new post buble ´normal´ better than the old ´normal´. The mailbox can be your friend for many years.

I was annoyed throughout the article with the snobbishness of the writer who saw nothing of the beauty of this area of America, and bemoaned its ´lack of culture´. Well, those people who call the Great Plains ´flyover country´ will never, ever, get it.

Although Obama bragged that oil production is up in the USA, he neglected to mention that it is only UP on private land, because the gov´t can´t get their hands on it to shut it down. The entire country could be booming if Obama would get out of the way.

FTA: Even a well-publicized investigation by the news Web site ProPublica that reported that there were more than “1,000 accidental releases of oil, drilling wastewater and other fluids” in North Dakota in 2011 passed without much fuss.
The authors should ask themselves, how many accidental releases of heating oil got reported in NY? How many spills are reported in NY putting gasoline into filling stations? How many septic tank draining companies improperly disposed of the water they removed? When you are drilling 100 wells a month, you get into a groove where you do it right the first and every time. It costs too much money to do otherwise.

#2,
That has a positive side. People love to explore the Badlands and rock formations in the western Dakotas. They love to hunt, fish and photograph the bounty the grassland and waterways have to offer. If New York Times folk see such activities as beneath them, that means they´ll never venture to this part of the country and ruin it.
On a frosty morning spent hunting for deer and moose, there´s no place to put one´s latte and French pastries. There´s no room for them in an ice fishing hut, either. Got to save space for your beer.

Actually, I´ve always considered "big city culture" to be rather shallow. Much of it is so very self-centered. OK for a cursory visit but very lacking in long term satisfaction. About like going to a strip club.

And a lot of what they call ´culture´--Virgin Mary covered with elephant dung, for example-- is ridiculous.

Many ideas presented as "new" are just rehashes of old ideas that have been tried before -- and have failed before. So it is no surprise that the recent "Growth and Opportunity Project" report to the Republican National Committee is a classic example of what previous generations called "Me too" Republicanism. These are Republicans who think that the key to winning elections is to do more of what the Democrats are doing. In effect, they say "me too" on issues such as immigration, in hopes of gaining more new votes than they lose by betraying their existing supporters.

President Obama and Congress will not solve America’s problems unless the people force them to. Washington is America’s problem. We are the solution. America remains a conservative nation. But the people crave leadership — champions who will stand up to the progressives, take on the liberal media and push back against the Republican leadership when they go wobbly. They are tired of politicians. (snip) As we move ahead, we must remember that there is a distinction between the Republican Party and the conservative movement. National Republican leaders have not advanced a conservative agenda for almost 20 years.

IN MATTERS of foreign policy, Congress, and especially the Senate, was designed as a hedge against the abuses exhibited by overeager European monarchs who for centuries had whimsically entangled their countries in misguided adventures. America would not be such a place. The Constitution would protect our governmental process from the overreach of a single executive who might otherwise succumb to the impulsive temptation to unilaterally risk our country’s blood, treasure and international prestige. Congress was given the power to declare war and appropriate funds, thus eliminating any resemblance to European-style monarchies when it came to the presidential war power.

Sequestration is “looming.” Sequestration is, indeed, upon us. I wrote a little about this in the January 28 issue of National Review. The Boy Scouts of America are in the news again, for the only thing they ever seem to be in the news for anymore: their attitudes toward homosexuals. Next week, the Scouts will hold a vote that´s widely expected to end the blanket ban on gays joining as members or holding adult leadership. By most accounts, the century-old organization will probably let individual chartering groups—many of which are churches—decide whether homosexuals can join and help run their troops.

Author Niall Ferguson tells CNN laws are becoming more cumbersome and hurting Western economies. Let’s take a preliminary look at the advantages and disadvantages of the cease fire agreement, from an Israeli and traditional pro-Western perspective. There are two big advantages. First, the agreement puts an end, at least for now, to the bombardment of Israel. (snip) Now to the disadvantages. First, Hamas won. Why? Because it bombarded Israel and was not crushed for it. And because Israel reportedly agreed to an easing of its blockade of the Gaza Strip. Mitt Romney is more than holding his own with Barack Obama tonight. Only two other challengers have done as well debating foreign policy with an incumbent president—Ronald Reagan (snip) [and] Bill Clinton against George H.W. Bush in 1992. Reagan and Clinton won. Romney is now on track to becoming the third challenger to win in the last 32 years—and the first in 80 years to defeat an incumbent who didn't have a primary challenge. Tonight, Romney seems as fully capable as—probably more capable than—Barack Obama of being the next president. He probably will be.

Itar-Tass also quoted the U.K.’s Sky News as saying North Korea currently has eight nuclear warheads.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.
