Corey Booker's Rough
Primetime Debut

Politico, by Maggie Haberman

Original Article

Posted By:FlyRight, 2/2/2013 8:13:45 AM

The past few weeks have brought out a different side of Cory Booker. For years, the Newark, N.J., mayor has expertly managed his national image as big city superhero, burnished by made-for-Hollywood feats: rescuing a neighbor’s daughter from a burning building, saving a shivering dog from the bitter cold. But since he started exploring a run for U.S. Senate in December, in the face of tougher media scrutiny that was bound to follow, Booker is showing the unmistakable symptoms of glass jaw syndrome.

He´s been the darling of the beautiful people.

Oprah, Spielberg, etc.

Since he´s gotten more scrutiny it´s obvious that he was an affirmative action acceptance at Yale.

Barely literate.

But he is clean, articulate, and well dressed. (Biden)

And if he has a sharp crease in his trousers the NYSlimes will love him.

The president´s power grab

Recently, a bizarre scene unfolded on the floor of the House of Representatives that would have shocked the framers of the Constitution. In his State of the Union address, President Obama announced that he had decided to go it alone in areas where Congress refused to act to his satisfaction. In a system of shared powers, one would expect an outcry or at least stony silence when a president promised to circumvent the legislative branch. Instead, many senators and representatives erupted in rapturous applause; they seemed delighted at the notion of a president assuming unprecedented and unchecked powers at their

ustin, Texas - From his sanctuary in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, with roughly a dozen police officers outside, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said Saturday that everyone in the world will be just as effectively monitored soon -- at least digitally."The ability to surveil everyone on the planet is almost there and, arguably, will be there in the next couple of years," said Assange, speaking via Skype to a large audience at the South by Southwest Interactive festival here. Assange rocketed to international fame, and infamy, in 2010 after Wikileaks began helping publish secret government documents online.

Sometime during the summer of 1998, a Montana-based journalist named Walter Kirn received an odd request: His friends Harry and Mary Piper, wealthy and religious, had rescued an injured dog and found her a home. His new owner was named Clark Rockefeller, and as badly as he wanted this dog, he had no way to come get her: He lived in New York City, was unwilling to fly commercial, and his private plane was indisposed. His wife, Sandy, was traveling on business, and he wouldn’t make the cross-country drive alone. He didn’t want to hire a stranger to transport the dog. Intrigued,

BEIJING — Malaysian officials investigating the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines plane Saturday said they were not ruling out terrorism — or any other causes — as reports emerged that two Europeans listed on the passenger manifest were not aboard and may have had their passports stolen.Vietnamese military aircraft participating in a search-and-rescue operation for the Boeing 777, which was en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people aboard, had spotted two oil slicks in the waters off southern Vietnam, the Associated Press reported. The government said the slicks were each six miles to nine miles long and were

Bob Costas suffered an eye infection during the Sochi Olympics, but The New York Post‘s Page Six claims to have an exclusive scoop on the reason why: “botched Botox.” That’s right, Page Six claims a source told them that “Bob’s eye infection was due to botched Botox. This isn’t the first time he’s had it.” And while that seems a bit far-out there, NBC actually gave a statement to Page Six denying that Costas’ eye infection had anything to do with smoothing out face wrinkles. NBC strongly denies that Costas — who arrived to host the games in Sochi with a forehead smoother than the Olympic luge track — developed the infection

France´s right-wing opposition is reeling after the publication of secret tapes made at the Elysee palace during the presidency of Nicolas Sarkozy. The recordings - in which Mr Sarkozy is heard discussing confidential affairs of state but also joshing with his wife Carla Bruni - were made by one of his closest advisers, Patrick Buisson.A highly controversial figure whose political origins lie on the far-right, Mr Buisson is credited with engineering Mr Sarkozy´s 2007 election by pushing him to toughen his stance on immigration, crime and national identity. After the election Mr Sarkozy said of him: "There are very few people of

Solipsism. It’s a fancy word that means that the self is the only existing reality and that other entities, including other people, are representations of one’s own self and can have no independent existence. A person who follows this philosophy may believe that others see the world as he does and will behave as he would. It’s a quality often found in narcissists, people who greatly admire themselves — such as a presidential candidate confident that he is a better speechwriter than his speechwriters, knows more about policy than his policy directors, and is a better political director than his political

The detective apparently attempted to knock on a window, causing the window to shatter. She then says she saw one of the men reaching for a gun. There were six people inside the house. None of them had a gun.In searching for more coverage of the story, I found a number of other recent and troubling police shootings in the San Diego area. Dems turn on Obama nominee;

Senate Democrats killed the filibuster for nominations because they wanted to be able to confirm the president´s choices for top administration positions even if Republicans were united in opposition. From now on, Democrats ruled, nominations would be confirmed by a simple majority vote. With 55 Democrats in the Senate, and as few as 51 required for confirmation, the change virtually guaranteed success for the president´s nominees. But even a rule change was not enough to save the nomination of Debo Adegbile, the former NAACP Legal Defense Fund official who was the president´s choice to head the Justice Department´s Civil Rights Division.

Hillary Clinton, the Democrats’ most formidable potential nominee for President, has a number of problems going into 2016, if she decides to run. There will be the standard “Clinton baggage,” which most millennials don’t care about — they have their own, much cooler scandals to obsess over — and upon which most baby boomers have already wrought their judgments. There are complex domestic issues that she’ll have to address — does she think Obamacare is the best way to solve health insurance inadequacies? And does she think President Obama’s policies have effectively addressed income inequality and unemployment?

During his speech to the CPAC crowd on Thursday, Sen. McCain fired back at Cruz during an appearance on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports. McCain said he spoke to Cruz about the comments and it was “cordial” but he took specific offense at the remarks concerning Dole. “He can say what he wants to about me and he can say anything he wants to about Mitt,” McCain said,

Via Matt Lewis, here’s Maverick once again demonstrating that “cordial relationship” in politico-speak means “two people who can’t publicly admit to hating each other but obviously do.” And it’s a cheap shot. Cruz’s point yesterday at CPAC was that Dole, McCain, and Romney lost because they weren’t conservative enough. That’s not because they’re gutless — he said specifically that they were “good” and “decent” men — but because they’re not committed, full-throated ideologues, even less so when they’re fighting for purple states in a national election. We can debate whether that’s true but there’s nothing offensive in raising the subject.

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md.—Rand Paul handily won the presidential straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference Saturday, one gauge of the Republican base’s mood less than two years before the 2016 primary season kicks off. The Kentucky senator received 31 percent, far ahead of second place Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who received 11 percent. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson finished third with 9 percent, ahead of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who received 8 percent. The announcement came at the end of the group’s annual three-day confab. Organizers said that 2,459 attendees voted on computer kiosks.

What’s been said of confession — that it is good for one’s soul but bad for one’s reputation — can also be true of testifying to Congress, so Lois Lerner has chosen to stay silent. Hers, however, is an eloquent silence. The most intrusive and potentially most punitive federal agency has been politicized; the IRS has become an appendage of Barack Obama’s party. Furthermore, congruent with exhortations from some congressional Democrats, it is intensifying its efforts to suffocate groups critical of progressives, by delaying what once was the swift, routine granting of tax-exempt status. So, the IRS, far from repenting

One of the most seismic changes in American politics over the last decade has been the emergence of a sharp generational split among the electorate. The Democratic Party owes its success in the last two presidential elections almost entirely to overwhelming support among the very young, which has overcome continued conservatism among older voters. The Pew Research Institute has dominated the field of exploring the ideological cleavages among different generations. And its latest survey shows again how the liberalism of the youngest voting cohort, millennials, remains firm, and likely to continue to recast the electorate. A few charts from the survey

Barack Obama´s parents were "married in name only," according to David Maraniss´s 2012 Barack Obama: The Story. But since definitions of an "in name only" marriage vary, such as "a marriage of convenience" or "a sexless marriage," and Maraniss failed to explain his claim, it is unclear what he was implying. Therefore, Obama´s oft-told nativity story must be searched for the full implications of Obama´s parents´ "in name only" marriage. (snip) So when did Ann´s and Obama Sr.´s "whatever happened happened fast" wedding happen? For no apparent reason, confusion abounds among Obama´s biographers over the wedding date:

KINGSTON - More than 150 years after European colonial powers abolished slavery, a coalition of Caribbean nations is considering legal action to seek a formal apology and monetary compensation. Caribbean leaders meeting next week in St. Vincent are expected to study a broad legal outline for the reparations claim prepared by a British law firm. The subject of reparations has simmered in the Caribbean for many years and opinions are divided. Some see reparations as delayed justice, while others see it as an empty claim and a distraction from modern social problems in Caribbean societies. Slavery ended throughout the Caribbean

Kuala Lumpur - A Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew crashed in the South China Sea on Saturday, Vietnamese state media said, quoting a senior naval official. The Boeing 777-200ER flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing had been missing for hours when Vietnam´s Tuoi Tre news quoted Admiral Ngo Van Phat as saying he had asked boats from an island off south Vietnam to rush to the crash site. If the report is confirmed, it would mark the U.S.-built airliner´s deadliest crash since entering service 19 years ago. Malaysia Airlines had yet to confirm that the aircraft had crashed. It said earlier in the day that no distress signal
