Barney, President George W. Bush´s black Scottish terrier who became famous during his White House tenure for the “Barney Cam” videos, has died, the Bushes announced on Friday. “He never discussed politics and was always a faithful friend. Laura and I will miss our pal,” Bush said in a statement. The dog, who was twelve years old, had been suffering from lymphoma. Barney gained quite a following for his “Barney Cams,” which showed the White House from the dog´s point of view. The videos were usually focused on the holidays, with Barney —

Thank you for the beautiful tribute to Barney, President Bush. Our family loved him for representing the nation so well as First Pet.

He never discussed politics...

GREAT comment for a sad day.

I collected an extensive Barney photo collection. He had class and gravitas! (As did his "care givers." I use that term so as not to offend the animal-rights-types.)

The Barney Christmas cams were a hoot and I always looked forward to seeing them. He was loved and you can´t ask for much more than that. He will be missed. I hope they get a new companion for Mrs. Beasley and especially Laura. It was obvious how much she loved her dogs. RIP Barney. You did good and probably didn´t even know it.

Three images come to my mind: Barney tugging on W´s pant leg at a Rose Garden press conference with a visiting head of state; W pulling over a Segway scooter (the press called him clumsy!) to avoid hitting Barney, who had unexpectedly darted in front of it; and a picture of W carrying Barney with both of them in profile against a blue sky. Same tilt of the head, same firm jaw, same eyebrows. Then there was Barney biting a member of the White House press corps. Good Dog.

Very sad. Barney was such a spunky, bright little fellow.
You can tell a great deal about people by how they treat their animals, and it was obvious that the Bush family are loving, caring folks who enjoy sharing their home with these sweet creatures.
May they find comfort in their memories.

Obamacare’s Score of 67

In school, a child who gets a 67 percent will generally get a D. But for Obamacare, 67 percent is apparently grounds for an A. Talk about grading on a curve. In 2012, the Congressional Budget Office projected that 9 million people would get health insurance for 2014 through Obamacare’s government-run exchanges. Two days ago, the Obama administration announced that 6 million people had gotten insurance for 2014 through those very same exchanges—and the administration could barely contain its glee. So, what gives? In the summer of 2012, the Supreme Court issued its Obamacare ruling, holding that Obamacare’s individual mandate was

It was an interesting day for Clint Didier. The former Washington Redskins tight end and current congressional candidate — he’s running for the Washington House seat that Doc Hastings will vacate upon retirement — has been in Washington, D.C., since Tuesday, meeting with groups, sitting down with prominent conservative politicians, and working to garner support for his congressional bid. And now he’s got an interesting conversation-starter. A poll commissioned by his campaign and provided first to the Washington Examiner indicates that he has 70 percent name recognition in the district and is leading his nearest opponent for the Republican nomination

BRUSSELS— NATO’s next leader was announced Friday: former Norwegian Premier Jens Stoltenberg will lead the military alliance starting in October. The appointment comes at a critical time as the crisis over Ukraine has suddenly made the 28-nation alliance a more relevant security force in Europe. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen will step down after a NATO summit in Wales later this year. “Warm congratulations” Fogh Rasmussen said in a Twitter message Friday to his fellow Scandinavian politician. The past weeks had seen a flurry of diplomacy as member states sought to push their candidates into NATO’s top political job. Norwegian

Two council members in Hampden, Maine, have sparked a widespread furor — that just keeps getting wider, thanks to videotape technology — for their refusal to stand before meetings for the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag. But he said he has good reason. Mr. Brann, who’s served on the council for 14 years, told The Blaze that he didn’t care for the reason Mayor Carol Duprey gives for

At the end of a joint news conference with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in the Netherlands on Tuesday, the applause for Barack Obama came from a grand total of one guy. One. Maybe, from moment to moment, this guy just … doesn’t realize what’s coming out of his mouth. Hard to believe he could forget saying on the Senate floor that all ObamaCare horror stories — all of them — are a GOP/Koch brothers fairy tale designed to besmirch the stellar reputation of the Affordable Care Act. Those remarks got heavy coverage in conservative media, and even got picked up at WaPo. You don’t toss a grenade that powerful without choosing your

In an address to the House on Wednesday, Alabama Representative Mo Brooks read aloud a letter sent to him by Dr. Marlin Gill of Decatur. The letter holds nothing back while detailing the excessive costs and regulations that Dr. Gill calls Obamacare’s “war against doctors.” Here is the full text of the letter, courtesy of Rep. Brooks’ office: Dear Congressman Brooks, As a practicing family physician, I plead for help against what I can best characterize as Washington’s war against doctors. The medical profession has never before remotely approached today’s stress, work hours, wasted costs, decreased efficiency, and declining ability to focus on patient

Nearly six in 10 people disapprove of President Obama´s job performance in a new poll by the Associated Press, the highest rating recorded by the newswire. According to the AP-GFK survey released Wednesday, 59 percent disapprove of Obama´s job performance while 41 percent approve. A similar poll released by the news outlet in January found 45 percent approved of him while 53 percent disapproved. Other recent polling has found Obama´s disapproval rating slightly lower, remaining in the low 50s. A CBS News poll Tuesday showed 50 percent disapproval, while Gallup has his disapproval at 52 percent. In the AP poll,

On Wednesday, Obama administration officials announced a two week extension in the deadline to enroll in the Affordable Care Act or face a penalty defined as a tax. Asked about this “delay” in the implementation of the ACA on Wednesday, Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said that there has been no delay. He added that some of the users who experienced problems with the website early on need more time, partially because “people are not educated about how to use the internet.” “There’s no hiccup or delay,” Reid insisted. “We had hundreds of thousands of people who tried to sign up and

On Tuesday night two things happened. 1. A trio of Secret Service agents were sent home from Amsterdam after one was found passed out drunk in a hotel hallway. 2. The Obama Administration announced (another) extension of the enrollment deadline for Obamacare signups. At first glance, these two events have little in common with one another. But, modern politics is all about narratives and storylines. And, both of these events confirm a growing concern from the public about President Obama: That he´s just not up to governing his administration and, by extension, the country, effectively.

One by one, the myths of the Affordable Care Act have been revealed. When the curtain on open enrollment falls on March 31, the last remaining big myth of ObamaCare will be fully exposed: The individual mandate has failed. After a last-ditch effort with President Obama himself encouraging "young invincibles" to sign up before the deadline, the administration is scrambling to boost enrollment. On Tuesday, the White House announced that people who applied for coverage on the federal health-insurance exchange will have until mid-April to finish the paperwork. The mandate was supposed to be the administration´s magical elixir for the assorted shortcomings

More than six million Americans have now signed up for private insurance under the Affordable Care Act, according to the White House, with just four days to go until the end of its first open enrollment period. While traveling in Italy on Thursday, President Obama shared the news in a conference call with thousands of health-care navigators and volunteers helping enroll people on state and federal marketplaces. As the volume of consumers seeking health plans has surged -- there were over 1.5 million visits to HealthCare.gov Wednesday and more than 430,000 calls to the marketplaces´ call centers -- Obama urged those on

When Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Pope Francis a little more than a year ago, the first thing that struck those who knew him well was his unexpected, beatific smile. “In Argentina, he didn’t smile like that,” Sergio Rubin, the pope’s biographer, said this week at a conference sponsored by the Ethics and Public Policy Center. “That was the big surprise.” Since then, the pope has mostly kept on smiling — in homilies, in audiences, in meetings with the homeless and the poor. If you look at the pictures from Francis’ meeting with President Obama on Thursday, though, the smile is there only some of the time.
